One of the best dual sport bikes still made. A fun bike for beginners and experienced riders. Hahaha your a bag hoarder too, great advice. Big maintenance weekend on the WR valve check chain and whatever else that pops up. Oh i was just thinking add a power tool to that suction cup. Loved the homemade tools. Fun video.

Great quality video where I can actually see what your doing, great explanations as well! On the last part of the vid you are reinstalling the cam chain tensioner, do you have to compress the chain tensioner before install every time? Also, does it set to the correct tension on its own or do you have to adjust it? I ask because I am about to change the gasket on my tensioner and I have to remove it. Thanks again and you have yourself a new subscriber!

@@klatonpowell thanks. Yes you have to compress the tensioner any time it’s removed. It will automatically set to the proper tension (if it’s working correctly.)

It’s possible. Easy to work on and parts are available. If you get it, plan on replacing the top end. If you don’t have to, you got lucky!

Nice vid, well done. Would have liked an explanation afterward of how you installed the piston, did you squeeze the rings with bare hands? Also, how did you know when the valve lapping was complete? Lastly, do you use a special tool for the crank and TDC inspection covers? they look like slots

Most motorcycle piston rings can be installed by squeezing with your hands. Valve lapping is something that you kind of learn, but a good test is to install the springs and put some gasoline in the intake and exhaust ports to see if it leaks past. And finally, a large flat tip screwdriver works for the covers.

I can't recall if we had the cylinder honed or not. I only did what they wanted done, it was for a guy I met. I don't use the GPS tracking very much anymore, probably should remove that from my description anyway as I had that mostly for my long trip to Canada, Alaska and across the USA a few years ago.

Rebuilt a 97 225 last winter. It starts and idles good but cuts out when I start opening the throttle, out of frustration I put it on the back burner but would like to tear back into it and see what the problem might be, had the carb off 20 times and wonder if I may have lapped the valves too much. Was my first engine ever. Built top and bottom end.

Thanks for the reply, It had a California carb on it that I could never get tuned right so then tried a mikuni clone carb and it ran even worse. Gonna try to get a non cali stock mikuni carb first before opening the engine again. Probably try to get around to it this winter got a XR650R to build too and would like to get the 225 finished first.

Make sure all the bolts are off first thing, don’t ask me how I learned that. A bit of tapping with a rubber mallet might help break it loose, shouldn’t take much.

Hi Tom, any idea what may have smashed the intake valve tip like that? I just opened up the top end of my TT R 225 and the damage to the intake valve tip looks identical. I’d like to know the possible causes to hopefully keep this from happening again. Thanks!

Maybe a loose timing chain or bad tensioner? Really hard to tell, but the valves shouldn’t do that without contacting something else.

This video helped we realize I had the cam chain guide placed on the outer-side of the head, instead of in that slot. I removed the head and put it where it belonged, but The cam chain still whines as if its way too tight. I can't seem to find anyone else having this problem. The noise goes away when I slightly loosen the cam chain tensioner. Anyone have any suggestions?

@@Moons-Motors I can’t remember how the guides go on this engine. Most of them have a slot on the bottom and the top for the forward one, the rear one has a bolt that it swivels on. If you didn’t change it, something isn’t quite right yet

Just pour some oil over the cam and rocker arms, I use lots of assembly lube when putting stuff together.

I’m not really sure, but I would bet that lots of things are very similar...Yamaha likes to keep using the stuff that works. I buy parts from RMATV OEM (google it).

Hollis Medley I’m not familiar with that model but if the engine looks the same it’s likely very similar. Lots of manufacturers used the same basic engines in multiple platforms.

Im about to purchase one cheap of a guy the base gasket has a massive leak when he runs it the bike runs poor and then leaks oil from the gasket quite bad and hisses as it loses pressure something to do with this gasket im wondering how diffucult of a job this could he

Old Bones Garage it’s going to involve pretty much everything on this video. Carburetor and exhaust removal, then the cylinder head and finally the cylinder. Couple hours minimum.

Old Bones Garage well it’s not a bad idea but these bikes are usually really reliable. You’re that far into it, a new set of rings and a quick cylinder hone isn’t going to break the bank.

Try putting a heat gun on the bolts for a minute or two, might have Loctite on them. Hold the crankshaft by putting a socket and breaker bar on the flywheel bolt.

alex soto if the valve clearance is good and the timing is correct, the next thing to check would be the carburetor. Make sure it is taken apart and all passages are clear. The jets need to be clear, use a tiny wire if you can.

found dead repairz I guess I would have to rewatch to see, but usually you can hold the crankshaft with a socket on the left side of the engine to keep the engine from turning

I have an xt225, it's an 05 I seized the wrist pin on it, while taking the engine apart I noticed one of the cam chain guides just sits in there, is that normal ?

And what are the odds that I can just replace the wrist pin. Everything else looks good, in my opinion. No wiggle on the crank just has a seized pin. Head won't even budge

@@ailenal2955 you can try, I have polished out the small end of the rod on an engine before and replaced the piston and pin, but it’s not the right way to do it. Really should replace the rod.
