The real thing. I learned from a good teacher but this is really in depth and from the grandson of the original Yang family master. So much detail is explained and I'm trying to absorb it all. This is the best detailed instruction I've seen on Yang family style. I've moved away from my sifu and this is now how I get corrections on my form, since I can no longer rely on my teacher. Thank you for posting this for all us students. This master is a rare treasure and a pleasure to watch and learn from.
I was surprised at the first few minutes. What no movement? Then I realized he is explaining the details of posture as a great teacher should. When I teach a piano student, they just want to touch the keys and start playing, but we must talk about posture to avoicd injury and encourage ease of playing. Thank you!

Real reasons TaiChi was practiced: 1/To keep monks from falling asleep while meditating; ie: A moving meditation. 2/To disguise fight training in a form that looked like harmless dance to warlords. 3/Because the monks were told to. Anyone have these motives today? Maybe no one should take it. Getting all wrapped up in "Tao Te Ching" & Chinese culture might make you feel "right", & that's fine, but your TaiChi might still suck, while some "bodybuilder" deepens his mastery.

this is a very interesting video even though the English translation can be difficult to follow.It's not for beginners though as he goes too fast. Ian Sinclair at Tai Chi Central has the best videos for beginners with some very detailed videos on the proper stance (Relaxation Is Not For Wimps) and movement of the waist and hips.Check out his videos if are unable to attend a class with a qualified instructor and once you have done a couple of postures come back here and pick up some great tips.

If we began w/pure motives, we'd be masters already. Motives evolve w/study&practice. No different from -any- study. EX: Many great musicians began study for any one of a multitude of wrong motives; to please parents, impress girls, or fulfill a school curriculum; but as the music unfolded, motives evolved. So it is w/TaiChi: One might begin merely to stand behind the cute girl in class, only to discover deeper meaning as the art unfolds, LET THE GUY TAKE TAI CHI!

太極拳 Taichiquan is Fist of Supreme Wisdom not boxing, 大+丶= 太 it means big without outside, small without inside. Chinese people have always tempered their internal 5 zang 6 fu organs, not big muscles like the West. We follow the Tao to make inside hard outside soft to be like babies for longevity and harmonious relationship with others. Since when the body dies it become hard, then the omen of dying is making oneself hard against Tao. Be careful, my friend.

It changes Tai Chi from a spiritual experience to a simple form of exercise. It would be much simpler for someone wishing to be healthy to alter their diet and use say... a stationary bicycle for cardiovascular health instead of trying to learn a martial art (as you probably won't do that martial art justice if you're only in it for health). Some people would view that as disrespectful to the art form. But hey, that's just one view! :)

Tai Ji consists of 'Four Pillars' or types of practice, as well as a variety of physical exercises and meditative practices. The Four Pillars are Qigong, Form, Pushing Hands and Application. What You see here is just Form. That is, as you put it, the exercise part of Tai Ji. Now you know there's more to it than just that. However, for some postures, he offers examples of use in fighting situations so that one may understand it is not just exercise but is structured mainly as a martial art. Tai Ji, even the Form, whatever Routine would you consider is not an external but an internal martial art; the Yang style focuses more on the Form as a means to achieve calm, health and such, along with some reflexes that may be used in self defense, while for combat purposes there is always the Chen style, not to mention the other ones: Wu (Hao), Wu, Sun. "Tàijíquán training involves five elements, taolu (solo hand and weapons routines/forms), neigong and qigong (breathing, movement and awareness exercises and meditation), tuishou (response drills) and sanshou (self defence techniques). While tàijíquán is typified by some for its slow movements, many styles (including the three most popular: Yang, Wu and Chen) have secondary forms with faster pace. Some traditional schools teach partner exercises known as tuishou ("pushing hands"), and martial applications of the postures of different forms (taolu). In China, tàijíquán is categorized under the Wudang grouping of Chinese martial arts-that is, the arts applied with internal power. Although the term Wudang suggests these arts originated in the Wudang Mountains, it is simply used to distinguish the skills, theories and applications of neijia (internal arts) from those of the Shaolin grouping, or waijia (hard or external) styles." - Wikipedia

(Sorry that key-slip confused you.) My meaning: Practice w/sincere effort &focus: you -are- 'right', no matter why you do it. No grand thoughts required. /// You didn't say it wasn't "ideal", you said it wasn't -right-. Big difference, but incorrect either way.Who are you to say what's "ideal"? Probably to live in monastery, forsake all worldly goods & pleasures, pray, meditate, & practice TaiChi all day, when you aren't scrubbing floors or milking goats. Ideal indeed. Get real.

It isn't right for those who make such snide comments to take TaiChi. (Sounds pretty stupid when it's turned back on you, huh?) To think its wrong to take TaiChi because you have a background in bodybuilding is stupid. What does "want(ing) to learn TaiChi -because- you're a bodybuilder" even -mean-? He never posted that. That's all you. If Cheng Man Ching posted: "I'm an alcoholic &I want to learn TaiChi". Darren'd post: NO! It'd be WRONG!

What are you, the gatekeeper for TaiChi deservingness? Anyone who so desires should learn as much as they can, whatever they can, for whatever reasons they happen to have. Motives & desires will change, as needed, as they learn. We're all unique, with unique motives.TaiChi's point isn't to make us all the same, but to refine our unique selves. If we needed to have the "right motives" before we ever began our studies, no one'd -ever- learn TaiChi. anything, -your- motives are questionable.

Maybe he's shy, a nice guy, doesn't like to argue, or BELIEVED you,(what a shame). I'm none of that. I'm not angry, not hyped up, just want to know what the heck you think is "correct", "right", 'ideal".You say you "set up the standards" for him. Really? Where's that? You keep responding about me personally, but you -never- set / posted any standards. Post some specific info. (I doubt it, but I might even agree.) Until then, I doubt that you -have- any clear, specific, objective standards.
@lazur1
11 жыл бұрын
Again, you miss the point: YOU set standards of "right" & "ideal", not me. I'm just trying to portray what on Earth you might mean. You never explained. All we know is you think bodybuilders trying to expand & deepen their exercise methods are -not- "ideal". So..WHAT'S IDEAL? (Telling someone it'd be not be "right" for them do TaiChi is -quite- offensive, by the way. Doing it face-to-face might get you a punch in the nose.)

My point is that your sefl-righteous arrogance is uncalled for.You miss my other point: He -might-, (not because he's a bodybuilder or any other type), without ever reading philosophy or embracing culture, become the better practitioner over the so-called 'right' student. Why? Because TAI TAI STARTS & ENDS WITH TAI CHI. For -that-, I -do- have evidence: As a long-time practitioner & observer, I've seen the most unlikely variety of motives & personalities become TaiChi adepts.
