If the impeller shaft leaks due to salt crystals scouring, it drips on the long under pipe causing failure within a year. You can re-use the scoured shaft if you turn the impeller oil seal around. I spray grease over all the 3 pipes you mentioned twice a year. I've motored all over europe and put 5000 salty hours on mine, 4 impellers, one long lower return pipe, 3 internal anodes, one impellor oil seal and very little MGO 😉 GREAT VIDEO! P.S I once had the engine diesel filter come loose and had to turn it and bleed her. I gave her a hosepipe flush once. I have a stuart turner sea-cock and raw water filter and replaced that short pipe twice 🤣 I changed to stainless bolts for ease of access on the impellor and white silicone sealant years ago, 5 minute change on a lee-shore 😉 You know your shit dude - respect 🥰 Due to no money my engine has been held in place after all 4 engine mounting rubbers came away by about 40 very big cable-ties, not too tight, not a great option but, it will get you home...

Hi, If you can't hear it run you can assume that it has lost compression, either at the rings or at the valve seat. If the valve seat has rotted the correct repair is a new cylinder head, but I have mended them; see my other video. Over £800 plus labour, easy diy mechanic job though. Check the rubber engine mountings £100 each! But it will work with ruptured mounts. I live near Dumfries, may be able to help you if you are nearby. Good luck, Jon

Hi. Do you service the engines? I might end up buying a boat that has one of these. The boat has not been used for three years, so I think the engine may need looking at. Cheers, Paul.

I have a Yanmar 1GM10 fitted on a Hurley 22, I want to fit a raw water strainer between the water inlet and the engine. What would be the best fitting for this? I have been looking at Vetus. John Ford

Hi, Thank you for watching. I have never needed to fit a raw water strainer so I am afraid that I cannot advise you. Best regards, Jon

The pipes dont rot thru quite quickly...unless you allow the water pump to leak. Make sure that is serviced. To prevent these pipes rusting wrap Senso tape round them...thats a cloth based tape soaked in grease. Senso tape is used to protect pipelines but you can buy it in manageable sizes. It will completely protect the pipe from external moisture attack even in the marine environment. Why does anyone allow their engine to get into this state?

Or unless the bilge gets full of sea water. And s... happens. And they are very often well on their way to perforation by the time I get my hands on the engine. Thanks for watching, Jon

Maybe adding some 2 stroke oil will help those piston rings too?

How easy to check compression while motor is in the boat and on the hard ?
@wotjonsez2560

Best thing to do is see if it will start, put a hose pipe on to the water inlet first.

@@MrBluoct As I say,the best and easiest test is will it start. Overall condition, has it been looked after or is it a rusty lump. Are there oil, fuel or water leaks. If you really want to, look inside the exhaust elbow and see if it is rusty. Check the engine oil. Check the gear shift. All the normal things. If it starts easily it should be OK

@@MrBluoct Hi Check the engine mountings, there are four of them and they fall apart, the rubber separates from the steel parts and they are very expensive.

Just about to view one in a yacht with apparently very low hours but its been on the hard and not run for years.Probably not had sea water near it in that time so i imagine it will be ok.Still turns.Gonna push a 32 foot fibreglass yacht.Seems like it might be a bit underpowered?

Check the engine mountings. Probably is a bit small for passages but it will do for leaving moorings etc. Good luck, Jon

If compression is poor, can the engine start easily? (Yanmar 1gm10)
@wotjonsez2560

That depends on what you call poor, These engines are good starters but all engines are rely on good compression. Just try it.

Hi should that anode at 5:48 be connected to anything or is supposed to be loose?

No, it's just fixed to the cover plate which is the 'earth' but you can link it to any other anodes on the boat if you wish

@@wotjonsez2560 Thanks! My 1gm10 which has very little use and only in freshwater until I bought the boat and brought her to NYC has started smoking at high revs, am thinking I have water in the fuel and engine. I am new to diesels and didnt realize how easy water gets in to the system. What do you use to minimize water in your engine? I wonder if the fuel filter on the the engine will help or a secondary filter would help. Do you use additive in your fuel?

Salt water cooling is a disaster. An air cooled motor would be much lighter and more reliable. Or just use a car radiator and Prestone.
