AS SHOWN ON BBC SOUTH NEWS 9/8/18 :-)
I make no apologies for the length and variable quality of this video! The fire broke out in a field just behind our road and I whipped out the drone without any attempt to get a nice cinematic image. The light conditions changed rather a lot (it was early evening, lots of cloud) and the smoke didn't help with focusing. Shot at approx 100ft altitude in 4K/25fps.
The uncut grass was about 3 to 4ft in height and with the weeks of scorching from the heatwave, it was as dry as a bone. You only really get a sense of scale when the firefighters turn up and you see that in places the flames are as big as them. The last shot shows how much of the field was destroyed and how close it came to houses. I believe one or more gardens at the far corner of the field did suffer serious fire damage and that the occupants, though unharmed, were badly traumatised. Not surprising.
There's been lots of speculation about how the fire started (kids smoking or deliberately starting it, a driver throwing a cigarette out of a car window, glass magnifying the sun, even lightning) but I have no opinion on that until the police have investigated.
Thankfully the event doesn't come close to those in Greece, the USA, Australia etc, but it's unnerving to see how fast such a fire can spread.
Just thankful that no-one was hurt.
