I can totally relate to this poem. Especially the part about learning to code switch. In the beginning it was hard for me. I felt as though I as betraying my ancestry by sounding different in a bid to be better understood. I literally would get migraines because of it. Over time, however, I have learnt to make excuses for people.

I can relate to this as a person native English born. UK has over 100 different accents and dialects, and it is hard to understand each other at times. If I ask someone to repeat, it is not because I disrespect their roots. If I am living in a different place to my original home, I am happy to adapt. For me it is fun to 'code-switch' - I do not assume that I am a victim of others' prejudiced views because that would be prejudice and presumptuous of me. I have had the experience of going home to the North when friends, family and neighbours notice the changes in me; 'you sound posh', or 'you don't sound like you are from around here'. I work in Asia now, and again I find different accents. It would be nice to speak in my strong Mancunian accent all the time (the twang never leaves) - but I also understand that not everyone (especially my students) can always understand. It would be rude for me to expect everyone I speak to, to understand me perfectly or relate to why I love my Mancunian roots so much. I am white.

I was born and raised in the US. The only language my family uses is English. I have a Californian, American, accent. I can't relate to this poem because it doesn't relate to me. But it's still poetry that doesn't need an accent to understand its beauty. My lack of understanding doesn't hinder the fact that this is a beautiful poem
