The Lower Mississippi River Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office is now co-located with the Private John Allen National Fish Hatchery and the Southeast Aquatic Habitat Restoration Team in Tupelo, Mississippi. These U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service units are working with the Service's Mississippi Ecological Services Office, other federal agencies, state agencies, and non-government partners to restore populations of the Yazoo Darter in northern Mississippi and habitat the fish needs to survive. The Yazoo Darter is found only in the Tallahatchie and Yocona river basins in Mississippi. Much of the fish's habitat is isolated by barriers such as perched road culverts and other obstructions. In the restoration project, the partners are removing barriers, taking other steps to improve habitat, and working with private landowners to stem erosion of stream banks and other challenges. This cooperative approach can be a model for other fisheries conservation projects throughout the Southeast and elsewhere. Wildlife Mississippi and the Lower Mississippi River Conservation Committee, two nonprofit conservation organizations, provided funding for this video.
