For your information this song is a cover of a poem entitled "Choucoune" which is the work of a Haitian poet named Roswald Durand. It was written in 1883, in the text it praises the beauty of a young Haitian girl. The poem was transformed into music in 1893. And its English version which is "Yellow bird" had been arranged by Norman Luboff in 1957.

Well said. Oswald Durant is the poet name.

The English lyrics of "Yellow Bird" bear NO RELATIONSHIP whatsoever to Oswald Durand's words; they're just grafted onto Mauleart-Monton's melody.

Note also that the Harry Belafonte version has different lyrics, ones much more closely related to the Oswald Durand poem. Which makes sense; Belafonte's guitarist at the time was Frantz Casseus, who like every Haitian had grown up with the original song and knew it well.

This immortal song , of course for us members of our family, reminds me of the childhood days of my children where I taught my daughters Cielo and Mia to do the "duet" of the song where they reap some honors and winnings. They also taught the song ,of course with my guidance also, to their younger kids, Hazel and Job, who also did it beautifully, in their school program, although they were not as successful as their elder sisters.....Just ...for .....memories only..... and not for " whatever."..

I used to hear this song when I was in my teens and always liked it no matter who sang it. It is very nice and good to hear and has catchy rythm and lyrics. So it is very nice to hear and enjoy. I recall lying down on the bed tired of studying my High School subjects and turning on the radio to hear it.
