Meet the vibrant Yellow-throated Vireo (vireo flavifrons)! With a striking yellow throat and chest, highlighted by bold yellow "spectacles," this chunky, colorful bird is one of North America's most dazzling vireos.
Yellow-throated Vireos face significant challenges, including habitat loss and fragmentation, both in their breeding and non-breeding areas. Although these birds nest in forest-edge habitats, they still require good-sized blocks of forest (250 acres or more) to thrive. In the early 20th century, Yellow-throated Vireo numbers plummeted due to widespread pesticide use for tree diseases. Thankfully, increased awareness and stricter chemical controls have helped their populations bounce back.
American Bird Conservancy is fighting to help these stunning birds by conserving their habitats in the northern and southern hemispheres through initiatives like BirdScapes, local joint ventures, and Southern Wings.
