My friend went on exchange to Uruguay and he discovered this and brought it back. The first time I had it it was not pleasant but as I started drinking more of it it got really good and now I drink it all the time. It has replaced coffee for me because it doesn't make you crash like coffee and it has so many more nutritional benefits. Also in my own personal experience the best mate for the price is Canarias they sell it by the Kilo.

This is a great review and a good instructional for those who want to start drinking mate, very well researched. Mind you, when you start to drink mate the first 'cup' is usually the most bitter and it is not uncommon to spit this first batch if it is to bitter for taste.

It makes me really happy seeing people of other cultures/countries try this! Also, the Yerba you chose is very very powdery so it tends to be more bitter. I personally do not like that brand and prefer a thicker cut.

Some people compare drinking mate in a round(we would usually make a circle of people drinking mate) with the pipe of peace but instead of peace with friendship. Also when you are waiting for the yerba to soak the water before strart drinking it's better to add a little bit of cold water with the hot water(it prevents from "burning" the mate making it look a little black and change the flavor). Some people add orange peel on the mate to make it sweeter and other stuff too to make it healthier Lastly so cool to see people from other parts of the world sharing my same culture, greets from Uruguay

Add Stevia is correct since the Guaranies used to mix some leaves of Stevia in the gourd to kill the bitterness of the Caa-Pora as they called it. Both plants are native of the same area in South America.

Cool video!!. You should definitely try your mate with cold water too (with a little bit of mint leaves squished in the water if you fancy... or a pinch of lemon even... that's a Paraguayan way to drink it and it's super refreshing for the summer. !! Actually the scientific Latin name of the yerba mate is Ilex Paraguayensis. The cold version (and the original way to drink it cause the natives drank it naturally from the springs waters years and years ago) its called TERERÉ.... and you can also make a tea beverage strained ... instead of coffee called COCIDO ... that's a Paraguayan beverage too!!!!

When flipping the cup, shake it repeatedly upside down to get the fine powder to the top, then flip it right way up just far enough to get your incline and place it down gently. Water should be at around 70 degrees celcius, the temperature of the water will have a bigger effect on the flavour than anything else.
@Carlika

You can also sweeten it with a bit of sugar on the yerba between pours (some people sweeten the water), or add things to it for flavor like ground coffee (that’s for pulling an all nighter), orange or lemon peel, or you can experiment with herbs such as fresh thyme.

Great video but you say way too much about how to make it properly. It might scare some people. The easiest and the quickest way is to boil the water, wait a few minutes to cool it down and then pour the water into the thermos. The best way to check if the temperature is right is to put your little finger into the water and if it doesn't hurt too much the temperature is just right. I recommend using thermos with the tap. There is also a convenient method to put the bombilla correctly. Simply fill in the gourd and put the bombilla in it. There's no need to pour the water first. However, first sip is for the Saint Thomas and the fun fact is that the people in South America spit it out on the street and it isn't an ugly behaviour. By the way, I love the taste of mate without any sweeteners. Its bitterness has good sides! Bitter products help in digestion and they have some antibacterial properties. You can't say the same about coffee which might cause heartburn, indigestion etc. Have a nice day :-)

Well I looked online and Walmart sells Vanilla Rooibos tea and I noticed Target sell it too, a brand called Celestial Seasonings Rooibos with Madagascar Vanilla as i have not tried that brand I can not say it has the same or similar taste as the tea I drink. Scott Warren Apparently, according to 2 sources I read before coming here, it's actually a little more complex than he explained it, because he missed a very important step. According to the traditional directions, it's important to add the yerba mate as he did, shake it, form a little pocket in the gourd like he did, but then you should add cold water and let it sit for a minute or 2, allowing it to settle into the dry herb, before adding the hot water. Supposedly if you skip that step, it partially destroys and disturbs the desirable natural chemicals in the mate.

RECOMMEND: Do not start with the hot water. First get a cup and put some hot and cold water to just about 40°C (or merely warm) to start with. Pour the warm water on the lower side of the yerba but do it in portions (pour a little, then a little more, and so on. 3 or 4 is fine). Then sip the warm water by the straw but don't swallow it..it won't taste as good. You spit it, and then, with the yerba now wet, you'll pour the 80°C water you heatened in the beginning. You're now set to enjoy.
