Here's my sincere condolences to all here who've lost dear pets. I've mourned pets deeply too and for people who say, "Get over it, it's just a dog/cat," I know those people have a hole where a heart should be. Loving an animal takes complete compassion, warmth and ability to share one's life with a little being capable of expressing affection and love, deserving of the best life you can provide. My big old kitty The Donut has been gone 3 years, yet I still think of her fondly on occasion. I hope you who've lost a pet still feel the richness of having shared your life with them.

Okay, crying as I write this. Just watched your video, and I want to tell you about what happened with my dog who just passed in May, four months ago almost to the day. Cupcake, my 19.5-year-old border collie mix, was dying of bladder cancer. I was doing the horrible dance of wanting to get her euthanized if she couldn't take it anymore, but not wanting to take her to the veterinarian too soon. (You can't know 100% if you're making the right choice. You can just do your best and then hope you've not kept your pet too long, nor sent her on her way too soon.) So I did the dance, every day agonizing over whether I was doing right by this dog that had been nothing but utter joy for the 19 years I had had her. I had gotten Cupcake off the streets of Los Angeles, along with a pit bull mix.The two of them had found each other on the streets, and had made their own little pack. They had clearly come from different homes, each with their own "issues" and each so very different from the other in appearance and temperament. I tried and tried to find their homes, but no-one came forward for them. So now I have two new best friends, who were already best friends with each other. I also have an African Grey Parrot, and, as you may or may not know, African Greys "vocalize" according to what stimulus is occurring around them. So, for example, she sees the trash truck arrive, and hears the dumpsters being emptied, and she starts doing the back=up "Beep! Beep! Beep!" right away, knowing that truck is about to make that sound. Or she'll see me walking to the back door at night to let the dogs out to use the bathroom before we all go to bed, and she'll say, as I am opening the door to let them out, "Hurry up! Hurry up! No messin' about! Hurry up!" Well, Lullaby, my pit bull mix, had died seven years ago. But in the last three or so days before Cupcake died, my parrot kept saying, "Lullaby! Cupcake!", and even eyeballing the ground as if following someone or something across the room. In my opinion, Cupcake was ready to go, and Lullaby was here to help Cupcake make the journey. On about the third day of hearing my bird saying my (dead) dog's name, I realized it was time. I took Cupcake to the veterinarian, and, knowing full-well that Lullaby was there, too, thanked both dogs - Cupcake for having been such a wonderful dog all these years, and Lullaby for having come back to help Cupcake make the journey. _Miss you, my girls, and thank you so very much. You helped me become a better human, and gave me such joy for so many years. See you soon, my sweethearts._

It's true, animals stay near on occasion like this. After my elderly parent's huge German Shepard died, he still patrolled their back yard. Guests used to mention the big dog that used to be in the yard and when they'd look away he'd be gone. No doubt he was still protecting them. My parents just took it in stride when people were curious about "your big dog." When my parents had both passed away the new owners never reported anything strange happening like that.

I really appreciate this post. My 16 yo dog is deteriorating before my very eyes. The thing that upsets me the most about him aging, is that he often doesn’t want my attention. He mostly just sleeps and lies in his bed. I try to make him go outside because he really needs the mental stimulation and exercise. I am completely devastated to know that I could lose him at any time. At least now, I’ll know what behaviors to look for when it’s his time. I really hope that he doesn’t choose to die alone. I’ve been telling him that, when it’s my time, to please appear to me and find me so we can both be together forever. I can’t talk about it without crying. Even now, I’m very choked up about it. Thanks for the knowledge, Hospice Nurse Julie.

@Vincent Pardue I hope you are doing okay, Vincent. I just lost my beloved dog a few months or so ago and it's so painful. But may I gently suggest that he may not "need the mental stimulation and exercise." He may be at death's door and just waiting to die. He may actually be in a lot of pain, Vincent. Please, please take him to the veterinarian and simply ask the doctor for an assessment of your sweet pooch's pain level. Euthanization is the last gift we can give our pets. I know it's hard, Vincent, I really and truly do. Please have him checked.

I prepared myself the last year and a half of Rylie’s life when she really started struggling to walk. She was blind already about a year at that point and then started having joint issues. She lived an amazing 15.5 years with us and I miss her so much I can’t describe it. Just make sure you ignore any dumb family members or friends who try and belittle your time with your little guy after he passes in the future. Just give him love and sit with him and kiss, hug him. He will appreciate. Rylie, while more limited for sure in the end, was happy just knowing we were home with her. My best friend passed away from Covid a year and a half ago. Six days later, our aged German Shepherd began having grand mal seizures and the vet advised us to release her from her pain and the terror she was experiencing. As I waited for our beloved pet to be prepped for the procedure, I realized that she was going to have to make that crossing alone. I prayed and asked the Lord to allow my friend to come and be with our dog, whom she had known and loved dearly in her life. Suddenly I realized that I wasn't alone in the treatment room. I could feel the presence of my departed friend so strongly! I was then at peace and when our much loved dog was wheeled into the room and laid in my arms, her eyes became fixed on a vacant corner. I whispered to her that her Auntie had come to take her to Heaven. She relaxed in my arms and, as the drugs were administered and I felt her spirit leave her body, that sense of my dear friend's closeness slowly faded. She had done what I asked and the two of them walked into Heaven side by side.

Her cat who had always loved to spend his days outside in the back yard under the honeysuckle bush, never went outside after she went on hospice. He stayed at the foot of her bed those 5 months. Only exception was to go eat and use his litter box. After she died he climbed on her bed and layed on her pillow for two days untill medical supply came to collect her bed . When they removed her bed, he went to the back door and asked to go outside. He went to the honeysuckle bush by the back door and layed down. He passed away in that same spot 8 hours later. We buried him next to the honeysuckle bush.

The year was 2002 when I saw this happen with my ferrets. It was a heartwarming and amazing experience. I had a sick ferret beyond veterinary help. He was at the O.S.U. College of Veterinary Medicine where I was employed at the time. He was in the ICU with a disease that had never before been seen in a ferret. If I could remember what it was, I'd mention it. The main veterinarian taking care of him explained why he wasn't going to make it so we scheduled a day for euthanasia. He said it would be a good idea to bring my two other ferrets in to say goodbye to him. And that's what I did. I had him in a blanket and set him down so that my two girls could see him. They did something that they had never done before and that was grooming him. They both did it. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I just knew that they knew what was happening. From then on, I was in awe of their sense of death awareness.

Thank you, Julie, for all of your videos! When our 18 year old cat showed signs his life was coming to an end, but that he was happy and not suffering, we decided to let nature take its course. It was around that time that your videos started popping up in my feed, and I’m so grateful. Your insights and guidance on letting him be our guide in his care, and that keeping him comfortable, safe, and clean was enough, helped me to feel more calm so I could be a better carer. So basically you helped him have a better end of life experience by helping me. He definitely waited for our daughter to come home from college so they could say goodbye, he also had a surge about two weeks before passing and started playing like a kitten. When he could no longer walk he seemed fine to just sleep and let me take care of him. He would lift his head for cuddles and wanted little sips of water, but mostly just slept. When he stopped asking for food and water we stopped offering it and didn’t panic. The night he passed I noticed his breathing change so we just sat and stroked his fur and told him we loved him until he died. Our other cat and dogs were really tuned in to what was going on and knew when he passed. They were quite somber so we just sat and comforted them. I felt so calm and peaceful after he passed and knew in my heart he was ok moving into the next leg of his journey as a spiritual being. I miss him terribly, but take comfort in knowing he had a very good life all the way to the end. Thank you for all you do to help people lose their fear of death, because like you say, it happens to all of us eventually.

We've had animals start playing and acting like a baby again then pass away that same night. We've also had animals wait until the family was together to pass, and We've also had animals go off and lay under a bush in the backyard and just pass away. I had to tell our dog it was okay and she was a good girl before she'd finally let go...they know, just like we do sometimes. They probably know more and understand more than we do. Sometimes they love us as much, probably more, than we love them. They'll do the same for us as we would for them. It's kind of sad to think about in a way. Maybe it'd be better if none of us ever knew, never saw it coming. Nobody could be scared then...idk.

My dog passed away last year. She (Heidi) was 16.5 years old with a lot of arthritis. I have to say she was an amazing pet ! Anyway she was struggling so I made the appointment with the Vet to uthenise her and her appointment was for 1:40 pm and she passed away with me beside her at at home at 12:30 pm. I had found that interesting that she actually passed on her own before her Vet appointment. Heidi was always beside me no matter where I was and so she was laying on her bed watching me as I was talking on the phone. As soon as I hung up I pet her head and the moment I turned away she stood up and changed her position and then passed away. She was on her side and was as if she was running just like dogs do when they're dreaming. I held her while she did this so she passed in my arms. It was very quick and I'm so thankful that I turned to check on her and saw what was happening so I could hold her.

When I had to put my 18-year-old dog, Wally, to sleep, I had my arms wrapped around him as he lay on the metal exam table. I was crying my eyes out and wanted to grab him and run from the room, but I knew he was in severe pain and he had to be given peace. The minute the Vet gave Wally the shot and stopped his heart, I saw and felt him walk through my arms and sit next to me on the table. It tingled where he walked through me, and he looked hazy, grayish, and pixelated. He also looked like he did when he was around 2 years old and healthy. I immediately stopped crying and asked the Vet and Mom if they saw it too. I explained what I experienced, and they shot each other concerned glances that said, "OMG! She's gone insane from grief!". I know what I saw and felt. I also felt him sitting on my lap the entire drive home. This was a gift from God. I've held other pets when they were put to sleep or died and held many other animals who were put to sleep in my Dad's vet clinic, and I never experienced this. I don't know why I experienced it this time. It's not that these other animals didn't have souls, they did - all animals do, I think it's just that I was somehow open to it this time. I thank God for this incredible gift.

I had a male and female cat that grew up together. My male cat was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 16 and lived another 4 months after diagnosis. About a month before he died, when it became terminal, my female cat Millie jumped out of my 2nd story window to get away from him and I couldn't catch her. She'd run and hide underneath the house the second she saw me. I was beside myself at this point. I had been taking him many times to the vet during that last month for checkups, fluids, and pain meds but the time came for his last visit. That day I came home without him, I sat up in my small lookout room mourning his loss and the loss of Millie, too. At about 8:00 pm I heard a tiny meow outside. I ran down to the kitchen door, opened it, and in walked Millie and she walked straight up the stairs to our bedroom. She knew his spirit was gone and now she could return and have peace. I'll never forget that powerful moment!

The second one died in my son's arms and right before she went, she started "running" with her front legs. We said she was running to the Bridge. 💗

My rabbit Mabel just died in my arms yesterday. I had previously watched a bunch of your vids and they were extremely helpful for me to know how to respond. For one thing, I didn't force her to eat or drink, even though in rabbits going too long without eating is considered an emergency. She ate in the morning but refused food a few hours later, and I remembered what you say about trusting that the body knows how to do the dying process and letting that process work unimpeded. She had terminal cancer so she was basically on hospice care, so I continued to look for signs of GI stasis as a result of her not eating but considered that her refusal my have meant death was imminent, which was indeed the case. The other thing you helped me with was recognizing what I think are death throes--she started making these cries intermittently and making spastic movements. I don't know if it was agitation or what exactly and I considered giving her more pain meds than had been prescribed, but I was also able to bear in mind that what was happening was part of the natural death process and that it didn't mean something was wrong. Fortunately the movements and cries only lasted a few minutes and then she passed. I would have liked to have been more present with her in that moment instead of worrying but we had been cuddling together and she died in my arms so I think it was a pretty good death. I guess it was part of the divine plan that I randomly stumbled upon your vids in the months prior to her death. So I thank you so much for your work on this channel.

I had a beautiful Miniature Schnauzer that was literally my soul mate. She had congestive heart failure and was going down hill. She had stopped eating and was preparing to die. She always shied away from making direct eye contact but a few days before she went into full blown chf, she stared straight at me. When she did this, I knew in my gut that she was trying to tell me that it was her time to go. I was insevere denial and did not want to accept it. I had to eventually have her put down because she went into full chf. She was really suffering. It just about killed me to lose her. I cannot wait to see her again.

I got my first cat when I was 6. When I moved away from home after college my mother encouraged me to leave her at home because she was older by then. Mom called and said she thought it was time I flew home to MI from Salt Lake City loved her and held her all day and all night, she passed away in my arms just before dawn I was 24 she was 18. I know she waited for me.

Like young children I believe animals can see "angels", souls, spirits whatever one's preferred term is for loved ones that are in heaven. And I think their amazing ability to smell is why they know a person or other animal is passing. The same sensitivity some pets have that makes them able to feel their human is about to have a seizure and warns them so that person can lay in a safe spot until they recover after the seizure occurs.

When we finally was able to decide to take our 15 yo Yorkie to be euthanized-She did the end of life rally. Thankfully our dr reassure d us how this was very normal, because it gave me second thoughts. I trusted them and went through with our process and know it was the best thing for her. I had another dog do the very same thing only we called a mobile vet to come to our home. This mini Dixie Maybelline jumped up off her death bed and ran to Dr. Mary. We all agreed for a treatment regime but it was only 2 weeks we we back in the same place and let her cross the rainbow bridge. Thank you for sharing you wisdom with people online so they are better prepared for our loved ones end of life. ❤️

This just confirmed for me what I’ve always hoped to be true. However, I was raised Catholic (I no longer identify as being Catholic, I believe in reincarnation now, which is apparently a no-no in Catholicism) and I remember being around 8 when my first cat, a beautiful seal-point Siamese named Brandy, died. I was, as you can imagine, devastated. I was in my catechism class and asked the teacher if pets go to Heaven too. She told me no, only people do. It broke my heart and I’ve always had this little fear in the back of my mind ever since, even though, logically, I know that animals and humans likely have very similar experiences. Especially as I’ve gotten older and learned more about the nature of the soul and reincarnation. But, this video really helped. Thank you. My amazing cat, Cairo, died last year. She gave me a reason to live when I was in college and super depressed. And she was there for my daughter’s first 7 years. She slept on her bed every night until she died. They were best friends. I loved that cat so much. It really makes me happy that she’ll be there waiting for me someday. Along with my beloved chihuahua and golden retriever and my other two cats. 💜😭🥰

So true. Our dog had a vestibular incident, looked like a stroke, but he had a strong appetite. Glad I took him to the vet who said he was not in pain and would recover soon. On day4, he is walking a bit. If it hadn't been for your videos about the dying process, I would have put him down. So glad I checked for appetite.

Our first doodle-dog 'Buddy' had a cancerous growth and was bleeding out. I did not know that or that he was dying but that he was very sick. He had been to the Vets a few hours before. The last thing he did, as I was cleaning the goop around his eyes was too look VERY deeply into mine. After leaving him for around an hour and arriving back home, he was still very warm but not breathing. I've always thought that he waited to hear me arrive back before dying. I don't believe anyone dies alone as God is always with us. I also believe that we will, somehow, meet together again.

You reminded me that when I separated from my twin soul partner 3 miles away ,my dog howled ...also Julie, I was gratified when you talked about dogs behaving like the dying person ...I am very empathetic and found I was in mergence with a woman who was dying even tho she was far away ....she was in a lot of pain so she must have reached out to me for comfort ....she was taken to a hospice and they gave her. Morphine and she released her hold . I sort of knew this was happening but hearing about the dog ,made it real ...such a relief ( I thought my time was coming and now I am back to my normal behaviour

I was traveling and my husband was at home taking care of my parakeet. I had such a realistic dream that I was standing at my front door with Buddy, (my parakeet). The door was wide open, and I was scared Buddy was going to fly away. Buddy said to me, "I have to go, but don't worry, it is ok". Then he flew off. I called my husband the next day and told him I had a strange dream about Buddy and asked him if he was ok. He told me, ya, he is fine. Then he called back a few minutes later and told me Buddy was dead. Silly as it sounds I had a pretty deep connection with that crazy little bird!

It’s been a little over 3 months since our beloved Rylie has gone over the rainbow bridge to join our friends and family in spirit. I knew the last 3 days of her not eating was going to be her final battle after 15.5 years. She the last year of her life she would have moments where she didn’t want to eat the whole day but atleast drank water and had a treat from the neighbor, per her usual routine. But then this time, this time she didn’t even want beef. That’s when I knew. I felt so bad that we didn’t give her too much beef when she was younger and healthy because we wanted her to be healthy and happy. My life and heart feel so empty without her and think of her constantly. I know in my heart I was see her again but it’s just so heart breaking. One day we might adopt her future sister but right now I don’t think I have room in my heart for another. On her last day, she was pretty weak but at the vets office, she got up out of her bed and stood up as if she had no walking issues anymore. I thought she had to go pee but I had told her could go in the bed if she had to and made sure she didn’t walk over table because she couldn’t see and didn’t know how high she was up from the floor.

I don’t know why but I’m so afraid of death. I really don’t understand it. When someone I love is sick I do EVERYTHING I CAN to get them (human or animal) well/healthy. When I think back to when one of my babies (Yorkie’s/Dogs) that have passed away for whatever reason I completely freaked out, went into shock, yelled, screamed, cried hysterically. I still cry when I think about each one & probably always will. For some reason I have a hard time accepting that I couldn’t SAVE them & their no longer here. You mentioned the Afterlife in one of your videos, I truly hope it’s the way you described it. I wanted to Thank you for making these videos. It’s given me some insight on what to expect in regards to a loved one. I just hope it never happens. I know that’s totally unrealistic. Thank you again for taking the time to educate everyone.

Having dealt with feral cat colony and totally unmedicated dying n death And then a neighbors puppy litter who got parvo (all died) and their suffering a couple days each w/no meds Both animal types were seizing and grimacing and howling and writhing. It was among THE top traumatic things in my life and I’ve had a very hard life. I’m better prepared for ppl dying with no meds I’ve done lots of hospice with meds and 2 without (unneeded). Everyone’s going to be horrified at death w/o meds when it comes to this nation.

My friend Jeff called to tell me that our mutual friend Joe had been killed by a drunk driver. It was the middle of the day. All of a sudden, my dog Chelsea began to growl and bark at something only she could see that was apparently sitting in one of my chairs. She would run up to it snarling like she was trying to intimidate or scare it, but then she'd stop 2/3's of the way and run back to me like she was the one who was scared. She did this over and over again. I asked Jeff if he could hear my dog, which he said he could. We both knew it had to be Joe since Joe would want to know what we were saying about him! I later asked my Dad, a Veterinarian, how my dog could have seen Joe but I couldn't. My Dad explained that dogs' eyes are structured differently so they can see in different wavelengths, such as infrared, that humans cannot. If I were a paranormal investigator, I would take a dog with me each and every time!

All my animals that are dying and have been taken to the vet to be euthanized always know they are dying. My little 16 Yr old Westie and I were old souls. I believe she was dying when I had a stroke. I was in a coma for 2 weeks. She waited until I came home, got so bad we had to take her to the vet. Before the vet could give her the injection she was dying and crawling to get to my side. She didn't want to leave without me. It haunts me to this day. I miss her so much. Every day. My dear little Lizzy.

I have held.wild birds after they break their necks or die of the infection of cat attacks and they kind of do a silent death rattle and then the light goes out of their eyes and they go limp. Last year I had a batch of sultan chicks and was brooding them off grid this was the most delicate breed I had ever raised and we had a sudden cold snap on top of it and my Americana hen was scared and wouldn't help me with them and they also got lost in transit to me in st Paul Minnesota. So the result was I had near deaths and deaths. I fought for every last chick some fought to live some gave up and I still got them back some fought to stay. I wanted to keep the one my Americana hen Izzy chose, but she would not choose so I chose the one who liked Izzy the best, the other survivors went to show chicken breeders. But there is when baby chickens go downhill such a narrow window of time all of this occurs in you either get them to stay or they are out like a light.

My dear cat is in the process of dying. I decided not to have her euthanized because I had a bad experience when my other old cat passed last year. I took her to the vet for the shot. He gave her a tranquilizer shot first, which made her go limp in my arms. Then he approached with the shot. I know my cat felt major fear. I can’t forgive myself for putting her through that. So now that my other elderly cat is passing, we’re staying home. She’s in our dogs’s bed by the wood stove. Our dog has graciously allowed her favorite spot to be taken over because she knows. My cat slowly started refusing food over the last couple of days so now she’s not eating or drinking. I’m not forcing it either thanks to Julie. She will probably pass away at home very soon, warm by the stove, loved and drifting off to sleep. I don’t want to have a pet euthanized again. Thanks for reading.
