10:56 One thing that you need to consider is that in the seventies people valued musicianship. Kids argued over who the best guitar player was. Or the best drummer or bass player etc... We had posters of musicians on our walls. Everybody from 14 year girls to grandparents had a favorite guitar player. I was in junior high school when this came out. When we listened to this we were in awe of the composition and the musicianship. The fact that it was so long and went through so many musical changes was impressive to us. It was part of the appeal. Ask a kid today who his favorite guitar player is. Can they even name a guitar player?

I'm almost 70 years old. Yes became really popular around the time I was attending undergrad college at U. of M. in Ann Arbor, which was an era when fans anxiously awaited the release of each new album, and record companies demanded their signed acts crank out new albums annually. Yes released "The Yes Album" in 1971, then "Fragile" later that same year. "Close to the Edge" was released in 1973, the same year Atlantic Records released the triple-record live album "Yessongs" along with an accompanying videotape recording of the same concerts. Together these three studio albums are called "The Main Sequence" by rabid Yes fans and generally considered the very apex of the bands creativity. All three albums, plus Yessongs, went either gold or platinum in the USA, and were possibly even more successful worldwide. I've had young people try to tell me on youtube that Yes was a novelty act of sorts that hardly anybody was ever aware of. That's simply not true. They were huge, really huge, and capable of filling stadiums and multi-night runs in large urban sports arenas which sold out fully within minutes. As the popularity of prog declined, that of Yes declined, too. Their next studio album, the now infamous "Tales From Topographic Oceans" might have created a prog record for sales to record stores (there once was a time when people went out of their homes to record stores and purchased vinyl records albums by their favorite artists) and quickly flew up the charts, but that same album probably set an all-genre record for returns by record stores of boxes and boxes of unsold copies once fans heard the music: double-album, but only four songs, all of which followed Anderson's desire to explore the themes of Eastern mysticism. I happen to like it, but, if pressed a bit, might admit it is a bit of an acquired taste that comes only with many, many listens. The song "Close to the Edge" has been the subject of many doctoral theses and countless smaller essays, with most people thinking it is based upon lead singer Jon Anderson's reading of Hermann Hesse's 1922 book "Siddhartha" , which portrayed one man's journey toward spirtual enlightenment. Eschewing lust for material possessions and looking, instead, for spiritual enlightenment is a common theme in Anderson's music. Getting that message from these lyrics is a bit difficult, IMHO. Eschewing the joy of material possessions is easy for rock stars to sing about, while the rest of us worry about affording a new used car to replace our current rustbucket. Part of the distinctive sound of Yes was the contribution of drummer Bill Bruford, who left the band after this album, somewhat famously saying he thought the band had been playing a form of jazz, but with the three songs on CttE, he now realized they were not, along with his review of CttE as being the very best this particular group of musicians would ever be able to create. Maybe he was right. Most fans will tell you that the guys mostly responsible for The Main Sequence were the finest iteration of a band famous for changes of its personnel. Bill Bruford on drums, Steve Howe on Guitar, Jon Anderson on vocals, Chris Squire on bass, and Rick Wakeman on keys. Wakeman joined after The Yes Album and before Fragile. The "big organ sound" you loved was the actual church pipe-organ of London's St Giles-without-Cripplegate church. The band went to great lengths to include that huge sound in the studio production and mixing of the final product.

I wonder ...did you happen to see the show in Ypsilanti MI in , I think it was 74 or 75? I know they were touring to promote Relayer . I was a Chicago girl, just 14 or 15 years old, but all my friends and I, who were loyal Yes fans, made the drive up to Ann Arbor and then Ypsilanti where we camped out overnight along with a couple thousand of our nearest, dearest friends. The next day, we were treated to the most fantastic show I’d ever seen. As the sun was setting, a golden orange hue enveloped the stage as Jon sweetly sang “Nous Somme’s Du Soliel” , the sound wafted over us in a breeze, and the orange coated sunshine blanketed us in song and beauty. I’m cannot express how vivid that memory is to me. And I don’t even remember what I had for breakfast this morning. Anyway, I wondered if you may have been there - reveling in that experience with us...thanks for writing this very informative and educational synopsis of Yes. I think you hit all cylinders! And by the way to my dear Ryan, who reacted to this masterpiece, had paid us a dollar each for popping your Yes cherry here for us, you still would’ve gotten the best deal of all!

One of the most enjoyable aspects of YES is the way they pack so much into their epic masterpieces. On the first listen, you hear some parts you really liked, but then the next listen--and the next several listenings after that--you'll hear stuff you've missed the first time. I always loved that about YES, how their creations would remain fresh for so long. If you haven't listened to it a second time, I guarantee you love it twice as much upon the second listening...

This is an impeccable epic. The arrangements and the orchestration were at such a new level in rock. This piece makes me forget that they were a mere "rock band". This came out right on the heels of their "other" best album, Fragile, which was the first album to complete their most beloved line-up, the new addition on Fragile was Rick Wakeman, so the supergroup came charging out of the box, ALL five players were masterful virtuosos and VERY strong confident and assertive people. So, this us what it sounds like when you put five genius musicians in the same room and let them create.

The beginning took me years to appreciate, now I know it so well it doesn't seem difficult at all. Jon Anderson lead vocals, Steve Howe (guitars) Chris Squire(bass) both do backing vocals and they're all great at harmonies. As you can tell they're virtuosic musicians and are known for that, that and their deep knowledge of music theory (Howe couldn't read music and played by ear, of all the guitarists in the world that shocked me). Bill Bruford the drummer was one of the best at the time and like Phil Collins was trained as a Jazz drummer.

Bruford didn't leave "as he thought this was too indulgent" - perhaps you're thinking of why Wakeman left after "Tales From Topographic Oceans". The FAQ by Bruford on his website gives four reasons: (i) It was difficult to top "Close To The Edge"; (ii) as a drummer, he wanted a change in style; (iii) King Crimson wanted him; and (iv) he was sick of waiting for (bassist) Chris Squire to turn up.

This is one of the best 70's prog records of all time but as a first intro to Yes its a lot to chew on. It would be like the first Genesis song being Suppers Ready. Your a real trooper. Yes is a band that had many member changes, reunions, un-reunions, total regroupings and consequently their music can really be all over the map. Only 2 core members have been a constant, Steve Howe on guitars and Chris Squire (RIP) on bass. Just a note: Rush inducted them into the Hall of Fame and Geddy Lee played bass with them for their RRHOF performance. And your right you can't make records like this anymore for several reasons, one is attention spans and other things that have to do with money. You cant play an 18-minute song because of all the advertising money that would be lost. FM radio in the 70's played these songs because it hadn't yet been commercialized. I was so lucky do have grown up in that era.

This band has its own geniuses. Rick Wakeman is considered by many to be the best keyboardist of all time, besides his period with Yes, he had a very successful solo career where he did not move away from the prog style. Chris Squire is simply the god of bass, hearing other songs you will be convinced of this. Bill Bruford is not Phil Collins imo, but he was also an amazing drummer, by the way, he often served as a drummer for Genesis. Steve Howe will amaze you with his virtuosity on any instrument that looks like a guitar :) Acoustic, electronic, slide. It doesn't matter to him, he can do everything. Well, and an angel on vocals. Probably the most amazing thing about vocalist Jon Anderson is that his voice sounds the same both when he is 25 y.o. and 70 y.o., this angel's voice is his high-pitched voice at birth. You'd be surprised how good he sounds on any album, any year.

In an incredible and unusual way, with much joy and nostalgia, those of us who are over 58 years old see reflected in the reactions of these beautiful and young people those feelings that these beautiful works produced in our time. Feelings that did not include surprise, because at that time this was what was expected and demanded. Complexity, beauty and excellence, often due to simple habit or habit. Those musicians offered things that except for a few very few exceptions emulated or continued. Will young people also have fun watching our reaction to some more modern or current compositions?

Brilliant to hear you doing Yes. One of the most creative, talented and influential bands of the early 1970s , and like Genesis, were compelled to follow a more radio friendly path on into the 80's Steven Wilson has remixed his favourite albums of quite a few progressive bands from this era. Yes, Jethro Tull, ELP King Crimson. and others. He works with the original multitracks and with the benefit of current technology, remixes the music to greatly, but sensitively improve audio quality while remaining true to the original recordings. In most cases he does a great job, particularly with Yes, their classic five albums from 1970 to 1975 beginning with The Yes Album And that would be a great starting point if you do consider doing more Yes. The tracks are a lot shorter too!!!

You can hear Bill playing drums on ‘Cinema Show’ on Genesis’s live album Seconds Out (side 4) which I know you’ve listened right through on this very channel. The reason songs like this are not made any more is because producers are only interested in low risk, immediate profit rather than investment into bands in which it may take years for them to see a return. When it comes off, as in the case of Yes, the record sales are phenomenal. Nobody wants to take risks any more as everything is target based. It means the most creative and talented bands rarely get a look in. Its criminal really.

This is how the prog world works, we like to cheat with stupid long songs and stupid long albums 😁 Interestingly enough, there's an annual prog rock cruise where lots of big prog names go to play on the water with their fans. It's called Cruise to the Edge (CttE) cruisetotheedge.com named after this song and started by Yes back in 2013. And yes, Steve Wilson from Porcupine Tree is a whole different rabbit hole. He also produces remixes and remasters as well. Also add Marillion's back catalog to your to-do list. This song isn't very radio friendly 😂 Love Jon Andersons lead vocals. I'd say try Roundabout or Heart of the Sunrise. Definitely two of their best songs.

@@Kimobubby Just a note: remixes should not be confused with remastering. Its common for most people to get confused and that's on purpose by the labels. Remastering is generally frowned upon by many music lovers because most remastering is just a nice word for more compressed sound and the thing that's most egregious, just making the songs louder so they seem to sound better for radio. It's a marketing tool used by the labels to make more money from older albums. I fell for the marketing for many years until I read an article about it in an audio magazine. Steve Wilson does remixing which uses the original master tapes to actually clean the recordings up a bit, to correct mistakes in the original recording. and bring out certain instruments or vocals that were perhaps too far in the background or too far out front. Many of these recordings were done quickly and on tight budgets with no time or money to correct things at the time. Steve Wilson also remixed the albums into 5.1 surround sound for which he has been highly praised. I have several of his 5.1 remixes and they are stellar.

@@Kimobubby Your welcome. Since your on a musical journey it's also helpful to know some of this stuff. My intention when I share this info is to inform and to add a bit more dimension and enhancement outside of the music itself. Often as fans/listeners, we forget about the other people who helped make the band or artist create their musical identity, and the time and effort put into these pieces of music we enjoy so much. I remember you mentioning how Brian Eno helped shape the sound of U2's "Joshua Tree", that's a perfect example of just how important the engineering and recording are to any piece of music we listen to. Music is one of those rare art forms that require a collaborative effort with every person responsible for either writing, engineering, or recording adding a bit of their own "seasoning" along the way.

Great song though it's a lot to digest on first listen. If you continue with Yes, try their live album - Yessongs. Most of their material is way better live than in studio, the exception being Roundabout.

Your comment about a lot of younger people no longer having enough attention span to be able to get through a song like this is very well taken. I blame video games and smart phones, where everything is almost instantaneous and ever changing. When I was first listening to this in the 70's, I was 14 and had no problem sitting through this or Supper's Ready by Genesis or other long pieces... but we had no gadgets back then at all and very few media options. Different world now, there are modern prog bands out there, but I find it kind of unoriginal for the most part.

He said the opposite though 🤨 that he doesn't have the attention span he had when he was younger. I'm only 31 and got into this music as a teenager in the 2000s. And I was not the only one. Besides there were plenty of modern prog bands coming out at that time like Muse, The Mars Volta, Sigur Ros, Radiohead had become more prog and the metal scene besides like Mastadon, Opeth, Porcupine Tree. I see just as many older people today as younger people with their faces in smartphones and no respect for art...

I'm 21, and I requested this song, so prog is still alive. And if you want hear modern prog rock bands which received no attention and fell apart, then listen to Sleeping in the traffic by Beardfish. 36 minute of great music. Good prog rock is still alive, it just doesn't reach the audience.

The blame game! It's hard to get the same feeling you had when your cherry popped! Modern prog bands are hit and miss just like prog bands of the 70's. Do not forget that certain people in the 70's said that to appreciate prog you must have taken a lot of LSD. Presuppositions and prejudice walk the path for all our earing loses. 70's Punk music also did a job on prog with it's spectacular non playing music! Classic Rock radio has disseminate the formation of an attention span for decades now! The top forty hits are pummeled on younglings without their consent. You accept your faith!! Echo chambers are created for typical sounds and you do no get outside your bubble. For some this reinforces the sentiment of nostalgia. You do not engage towards anything else. Smartphones and a lot of things in this world are to blame. Now I will go listen to Prokofiev and after that to Nile! A good day to you mister!

@@Kimobubby , I was thinking the same, actually, when you shared your impressions at the end of the video. 90125 and Big Generator albums are quite different, they are not that crazy as Fragile and Close to the Edge. They are all good, but in very different ways. In those later albums, there were a couple of songs which became the all-time pop hits, like Owner of a Lonely Heart, Changes, Rhythm of Love, and Big Generator. These two albums, 90125 and Big Generator, are truly worth listening to, it's an undying legacy of music history.
