Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky on February 12th, 1809. He grew up with a lack of wealth, moving around to different places in the United States of America. His parents were illiterate, so Lincoln, who was a very intelligent child, taught himself how to read literature and how to write it. Abraham Lincoln loved to read many books as a young child. Unfortunately, he faced the adversity of the passing of his mother when he was just nine years old. Afterwards, Abraham Lincoln’s father, who was a farmer, found their home in Indiana and remarried a new woman. Abraham Lincoln, continued to live at home and continued to learn, he found a job on a ferry boat. Abraham Lincoln, very much enjoyed the water in part to his job on the ferry boat. Lincoln at this time, ran a farm along the Mississippi River, leaving home. Abraham Lincoln came home when he was twenty one years old. Thomas Lincoln, who was Abraham Lincoln’s father, and Abraham Lincoln had built a new wood cabin in Illinois. Abraham Lincoln then went to live in New Salem in 1831. Abraham Lincoln then wanted to become a legislature, shortly after the Black Hawk War started, which Lincoln volunteered to fight in. Lincoln became captain which Abraham Lincoln valued more than the votes for legislature. This war made Abraham Lincoln unable to campaign for legislation. When Abraham Lincoln came back home, he continued his run for legislature. Due to the war, Abraham Lincoln lost the run for legislature. Abraham Lincoln then decided to pursue law. In 1837, Abraham Lincoln passed the state bar exam, and acquired his license to be a lawyer. During this time, he dabbled in politics, and went to meetings under the Whig party. Abraham Lincoln soon became postmaster of New Salem by president Andrew Jackson, who was a Democrat. He then again ran for state legislature. Despite being a member of the Whig party, members of the Democratic party still voted for Abraham Licnoln, due to his lack of promises and care for members of the community. Lincoln continued to be elected legislature, before retiring in 1849. Abraham Lincoln continued to study law, becoming a well known lawyer. Lincoln officially joined the Republican party in 1856, leaving the Whig party behind. The Republican party was openly against slavery, which included many northerners. The Republican party tried to stop slavery from expanding, instead of trying to destroy it. In 1858, Lincoln became part of the U.S Senate, and had debates with Stephen A. Douglass about slavery. These debates helped Lincoln be seen by many residents in The United States of America. In 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the first Republican President. This upset many southerners, where Abraham Lincoln wasn’t on the ballot, due to Abraham Lincoln’s hate for slavery. Abraham Lincoln knew that America was split over the issue of slavery, and was willing to fight for what he believed was right. Many southern states succeeded from the union soon after Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated. This of course, infuriated the president, who thought succession went against the country’s laws. The south would attack first at Fort Sumter, starting the American Civil War. During the war, one of Abraham Lincoln’s sons, would perish. This hurt the president, but Abraham Lincoln pushed forward. During the war, Abraham Lincoln would announce the Emancipation Proclamation. This turned the war from simply keeping the union together, to getting rid of Abraham Lincoln’s biggest issue, slavery. Slavery is an evil that no person should go through, and Abraham Lincoln was the first person to address slavery in this fashion. After the north won the Civil War, slavery would be abolished everywhere in the United States. Abraham Lincoln stated the nation had changed, and that we have to work together to rebuild the nation. Abraham Lincoln was exhausted after the war, losing over 20 pounds. On April 14, 1865, Lincoln would be executed. Despite this, Abraham Lincoln is a role model for everyone to learn from. Abraham Lincoln inspires me to fight for what I believe in, and to bring light to issues such as people encouraging unhealthy behaviors to others, often on social media. Some examples are encouraging people to buy freshwater fish and put them into the ocean, encouraging people to abuse and gaslight their partners, and encouraging people to eat thousands of calories of food, instead of becoming a healthy and fit person. Abraham Lincoln was bold and kind, never lying to cover anything up, earning the nickname, “Honest Abe.” While I do lie, Abraham Lincoln inspires me to improve myself to help bond relationships and make change to topics I am passionate about. Abraham Lincoln grew up poor, which helps me to believe that anyone can make a difference, if they really try.
