For those people saying "Same old shit, different day......change the record" etc etc.....Yngwie hasn't changed his outfit since 1983, so I don't know why people expect him to change his playing style. He's one of the last great characters of guitar (compared to the boring-ass players of today). I prefer his music in small doses of course lol but I still appreciate what he's doing and more power to him. I don't see too many other guitar players being given 7 minutes to shred live on the news. He's guitar royalty.

@@tonym2513 Yngwie Malmsteen is 100% one of the greatest of all time, if you don’t agree then you don’t understand guitar and how he changed rock history with it. From Steve Vai to Guthrie Govan, he has influenced and inspired them all. He took Shred to another level in the early 80’s and showed what was possible. Know body was shredding like this before Yngwie come along. He also not only invented this style (The Blackmore and Randy argument doesn’t exist) but did (and still does) it better than everyone else. He NEVER changed his style to be popular with the changing times. He’s the only neoclassical shredder because nobody else wants to play it or hear it except idiots who think he’s magic. EVH would forever shit in Yngwie’s mouth talent wise. Buckethead is better than both of them, probably with his left hand even. And the greatest of all time is Django Reinhardt. Yngwie is a limited trick pony who uses 8 guage strings and scallops as crutches. Yngwie has a style. It's hard rock based on the harmonic minor and phrygian mode, and he occasionally plays pentatonic lines and even Hendrix-y stuff. On the other hand, bands like AC/DC and the Rolling Stones have been using the same three chords for 40 years and no one ever asks them to update their style. Yngwie has mentioned this several times, even though he respects these bands. It's always amazing to me when I read someone's comment that Yngwie always plays the same thing.

Don't get me wrong, his technique is unmatched, he has so much potential, and is my favorite guitarrist, he just seems to be uninspired compared to how he was in the 80s. But at the same time, I know when he came on the scene everyone was floored by what he was doing; like EVH came and for sure ushered in shred in the 80's. Randy Rhodes had a pretty big influence, too since his stuff predated a lot of the hair metal we ended up getting later. But Yngwie was to me, another person who came and made others just stop to hear this neoclassical shred. I prefer a lot of guys over Yngwie, but I always got to stop and listen to him play once in a while. Both in awe of his talent, and I do have a weird thing for the Strat/marshall sound he's always had - sometimes I think it's crap, but other times I enjoy the tone.

He hasn't lost his touch at all. This clip was shot about 12 days after I saw him at the Arcada Theatre in Illinois and he destroyed the place! His energy level and virtuosity would make anyone exhausted if they did 25 two and a half hour shows in 30 days. Seen him four times and never been disappointed! Also be sure to check out the guy that opened for him, Ethan Brosh. That kid can melt faces!

ok, this is not his top most performance..but still far better than many of you could ever do....yngwie is one of those musicians you either love or hate(or you admire or not to be precise) there is no in between....i do love his neoclassical style im in love with white stratocasters i do love his smooth tone...however i do say that he is a one trick pony..but that being said, the trick is good and man got his own style and i dig that..not a ripoff of anyone...and most people bashing him are just jealous really, trying to compensate their ability, because they cant shredd like that so they are pointing out how there are far better players who play three chords...i do partially agree because speed and technique determins nothing really..and there are many ways to be great...but in his own thing in neoclassical shred in what he does he is great and has feeling to it...respect him for what he does cause he put effort into it..if you dont like it a bit..why bother watching his videos?

Marijan Barać I don't know why you assume I do not understand your point. It's not exactly rocket science. In fact I consider certain parts of it a cliche attitude that suffers from some typical shortcomings. That is why I question why the playing level of a listener should be relevant to his evaluation of what he heard. The assumption that a bad review must necessarily be motivated by jealousy is shallow. Sure such persons exist. But critique is a natural part of any art process - from the artist themselves, from peers, from the craft/academic community, from cultural reviewers and from the audience. Yngwie is a professional and most likely harshly critical himself. This is how things evolve and get refined. And it's a tough, and ultimately product-oriented environment to be working in. The attitude that people with something critical to say should just shut up or go somewhere else is regressive and overly sensitive. The assumption that it's all about jealousy and everyone needs to be a top player to have an opinion and voice it is a cliche in and of itself. And there is ALWAYS some guy ready to repeat it in the name of his own emotions.

My god those women are annoying... The guy still has *amazing* chops, but like others here said it's nonstop shred which gets really boring after too long. Ideally he'd punctuate a phrase with a blistering lead and then back off to play something more melodic. As far as his look, 1988 was a long time (and a whole lot of cheeseburgers) ago. And did he really need to bring two amp stacks for an in-studio gig? (back to practicing pentatonic scales now..)

Felix3840: Firstly what you said is quite different to how Yngwie improvises in the studio. He presses the record button once and that take is almost always what goes on the record, not a selection from 4 or 5 takes. Secondly, his technique got better immediately after the accident (he said so himself); as Steve Vai said recently "the bastard just keeps getting better!".
@felix3840
11 жыл бұрын
@rock n vole: Yes, I know that Yngwie has always insisted that he got better after the accident. It's called "being in denial". In fairness he was still very good on Odyssey, but not as good as on Trilogy or those before it. But it was the period of his dramatic weight gain that saw his biggest decline. Watch the videos Metallic Live by Alcatrazz (1984) and Rising Force Live '85. That was when he was the very best. But, alas, not any more. Do you have a link or reference to that Vai quote?

He was a breath of visceral fresh air that inspired the movement of a whole new subculture of music. He was always unequivocally and unquestionably dedicated to his passions and delivered without any excuses. And since then, the bastard has just been getting better!" I think maybe your confusing progress with musical expression/technique with production clarity etc., he buries the guitar in the overall band more and more now where it used to stand out more clearly.

rock n vole Thanks for the link. Obviously I can't argue with the fact that Vai did say that. But it doesn't change my opinion, nor, I am sure, that of a great many people who, like me, were huge Yngwie fans in the past but deserted him as his playing went downhill. Look around - it isn't just me saying that. But I do concede that when it comes to the subject of guitar playing, Steve Vai is about as big an expert as there can be. But again, it doesn't change my opinion. BTW, that is the first time I have seen a direct link that actually works in KZitem comments. They used to have to be broken up and disguised to fool KZitem's software. It must be part of this new comments system that came in a few days ago.

Take a look a John Petrucci and his body of work. The writing and playing are leagues above anything Malmsteen has to offer. -Dance of Eternity -Erotomania -Overture 1928 -Six Degree's of Inner Turbulence Additionally, Petrucci has much better tone and variety of tones/effects. Additionally, Petrucci has much better variety of styles. Additionally, Petrucci has much better grasp of rhythm and uses it far more effectively. Additionally, Petrucci has had FAR BETTER band members. I would also argue Petrucci has had a greater influence on prog rock/metal. You can't enter the guitar sphere without hearing about Petrucci. Yngwie is a really great player, but he doesn't come close to accomplishing what JP has. Don't get me wrong, I love Rising Force but it sounds like a high-school kid made it compared to Scenes from a Memory.

+Montes Foreman Yngwie Malmsteen Changed guitar John Petrucci is not even a household name. , he's like Steve Howe without hits. 50 years from now people will know yngwie around the world. he's without a doubt the most important guitar player since Eddie Van Halen. John is a fine player a great player but so is GE Smith they're not changing the world.
@montesforeman5079

That's fine, malmsteen is very influential, but it doesn't change the fact Petrucci is much better. Malmsteens uses cheesy sounding fake drums in a lot of his work, the production is terrible. The recording is terrible. Really no excuse for a musical "god" who apparently has no ear for what he creates. The quality of the sound is atrocious. Go listen to Petrucci's solo album, or Liquid Tension Experiment or Dream Theater. It's so far above anything Malmsteen could ever do.

I bet some people who placed not so good comments here can't even play half of this song themselves. He's a virtuoso, not a tab reader for God's sake so don't expect him to play the same exact notes as the studio version of the song, he's one of the greatest guitarists of all time. I can play the song from start to end, but I am nowhere near Yngwie's level. You can't deny his accomplishment and legacy. And I think people just misunderstood his humor as "arrogance and ego". Just saying my thoughts.
