It sounds a bit lazy to my hears honestly. Like he's combining all these different elements, but is not trying to beautifully connect them in a musical way..I recently saw a video of the banjo player Bela Fleck improvising (on the Rick Beato channel), combining all different styles and every note sounded so musical and spot on. That was a complete different level if you ask me. To be honest, I don't know Malmsteen very well, he's probably better on the electric guitar. I really like Govan Guthrie who never plays a scale just for the sake of the scale..
@porkypile
11 ай бұрын
@@jpanbe His style is to be a virtuoso. He was the first true neo-classical shredder playing in hyper speed and perfectly doing so. Today he's extremely sloppy compared to before. His transitions arent as smooth or flawless as they used to be. However, it sounds like you're simply not into the genre and I dont think the issue is with Yngwie on this one. Might just not be for you. Playing a scale for the sake of a scale has a place in music based off of shredding, and that doesnt make the scale necessarily unneeded or excessive. The music would be less if you took it out, alternatively it would not be Yngwie Malmsteen. It would be something else, and Yngwie is Yngwie after all. I too used to not be into neo-classical or power metal inspired by neo-classic metal, but today I love it. Now it makes perfect sense so I can listen to the early stuff by Stratovarius and Sonata Arctica for example, and totally love it. They wouldnt exist the way they did without Malmsteen and Im thankful that he came around to inspire them. Michael Romeo, Syu and Takayoshi Ohmura are other Malmsteen inspired guys that can lay down a mean shred, while still upholding technique and feeling despite spitting out a million notes. About Guthrie I think he's definitely one of best and most gifted guitarists out there, but for me personally I'd love to hear more shredding from him that wasn't as heavily driven by fusion and jazz. That stuff bores me after 2 songs, and no matter how much I can laugh at Guthrie's insane antics, tapping into whatever classic and famous melody out of nowhere, in any key, that doesn't tickle me as much as someone going in to deliver a serious, less for shits and giggles, musical piece. Now Im by no means against writing seriously unserious music, but when the endless giggle-fest rooted in jazz fusion never end I rather sign out. Again, this doesnt mean Guthrie is bad. He chooses to play like that, and is by miles much cleaner and smoother in his execution than Yngwie is today. Prime Yngwie was another beast however, and the version of him we ought to compare with modern day Guthrie, if one ever made the comparison. For example, I love Guthrie playing with Hans Zimmer, because there he's serious (as in not goofing around while he's a total beast on the guitar). I find his playing gets more deep and emotional when he's not doing the fusion stuff as with the Aristocrats. He's got the chops to play the most beautiful vibratos but in the Aristocrats his vibrato tends to be more focused on bending into as silly notes and unexpected notes as possible rather than being emotional and passionate. Not sure this makes sense, but some of it hopefully does... Lol.
