I love this. Thank you for this beautiful documentary, though I am Cuban, our histories are very similar. Until, the Castro takeover. I’d love to have a documentary like this about Cuba but I’m afraid we would not be able to hear the real truth. Me da tanta alegría la islita del encanto!!! It’s the most beautiful place on earth. Cuba used to be beautiful too Would be grateful to be able to learn the story of my culture also, but that place is crumbling down.

Yup, we're mixed. Our roots are Taino, then follows Spanish, African, French, Chinese, Irish, Lebanese and more and I did my 23 and me and found a lot. Egyptian, Japanese, German, Dutch, Italian, Jewish. Yup, we're mixed and that's why we come out so different even if both parents are Puerto Rican because both of my parents are Puerto Rican and on my mom's side we have Puerto Rican Princess.

That's what the latino race is. A lot of us are multi-multi-racial. I'm half Peruvian, have Ecuadorian and my DNA came back as French, English, Irish, Portuguese, Spanish, Jewish, Egyptian, African from countries various on the East and the West, plus I also have Indigenous American blood from the United States southwest, Mexico, Central America, Columbia, Brazil and the Andes in Peru.

Thank you for posting this. I am extremely proud to be mixed heritages. My dad was born in 1937 and is from Puerto Rico. He was very young when he moved here. My mom is from southern Virginia and somehow they met in the Bronx. I am extremely proud to represent both. Back in our day we would be considered " mixed breed", or "mutts". My father purposely did not teach us to speak Spanish because he knew that being dark skinned, male, and accented, would lead me to further oppression. I didn't understand that when I was a kid but I do now. This has led me to research the world and its history as we know it at the present time. A great deal of it has been erased, lost or stolen by the conquering parties from the past and no one is exactly sure what is real. I think if more people, like you, wanted to know their past, they would understand their contribution to this country and have more pride where they are today. They history we have been taught in school is far from the truth and needs to be shared. We have to correct the theory of Eugenics and Social Darwinism.

I agree as well, beautifully said...I'm 100% P.R. as well and did an Ancestry DNA test this year and to confirm what Rosie said early in the film, we are ALOT more than just African, Spanish, and Taino...personally in addition to the main 3 races I just mentioned, the DNA test confirmed I'm also Irish, Italian, Greek, British, with a dash of Eastern European, and Middle Eastern as well..We Puerto Ricans have pretty much the World in us, and I think that's fascinating and freakin' awesome!

Truthseeker1961 You are spot on, I'm Boricua by ethnic identity but yes we are extremely racially mixed and thank you for noting that it's not just Spanish, African and Taino that we have in us, because I also took a DNA test (which everyone should do) and I am 58% European with a mix of (Spanish, Italian, Irish, French, English, Ukraine-Jewish, Scandinavian, German) and then 24% African (mostly from South Africa & Nigeria), 17% Native American and 1% Polynesian Asian. So yes we are a walking United Nations and I love it! We literally have the world in us.

I'm the same way. My mom was born in San Juan and my dad is a white man from Alabama. I kinda went through something a little different. I'm white as snow and my mom is a beautiful brown . I was and still am a mutt and very fucken proud. No one ever believed growing up that I'm actually just a bunch of different ethnicities thrown in a blender . Being from a mainly darker hued community it was rough as well. They always thought I was lien or being a poser cause I'm white as snow sayen no I'm actually Puerto Rican! Ever sense I was a kid I've always said I'm Puerto Rican!!!

I've met a few puerto rican's and they always let me know they're purto rican and I just look at them like, I didn't ask you 😆 to me it's like ok do they think they're better than other ppl and that's why they feel the need tell everyone they meet they're Boricua? I can totally relate to so much of this. I am so confused when people ask me what I am. My mother was born in Manhattan of Puerto Rican parents and my father was of German and Hungarian ancestry. I have European, Taino, and African DNA, but I look white and speak no Spanish. Despite all the confusion I still more often see myself as Puerto Rican. I think because I spent so much time with my grandmother from Ponce as a child. And yes I didn't learn Spanish because I would get laughed at if it didn't sound right so I stopped trying.

My father was one that came over to a farm in Chicago to pick up tomatoes from sun to dusk. My father and a friend decided to leave and come to NYC Bklyn then to Manhattan. That's where I grow up. First time I went to PR was when I was ten years old. Didn't like it. Why? Because of all the bites on my body. One time had to go to the ER for a bite infection. While coming back, passing the Gulf of Mexico we had bad bad weather. I didn't go back until I was 16 years old. Was scare of passing that Gulf of Mexico. We can smoke at that time, I must have smoked the whole pack. Mami let me. She saw how nervous I was. For I ran out of the airplanes, so she let me smoke. I was born in PR, MAYAGUEZ, came to NY at (don't laugh) 2 weeks old. BUT I AM A PUERTORICAN PQ TU LO SEPA!!. PROUD TO BE A. 💯 PUERTORICAN!!!

I understand why this video has some information that is confusing and not correct...you need to understand that Puerto Ricans who migrated in the fifties were mainly poor families with little education and only wanted to work to feed and better their families..some came as farm workers and saved money to bring their family to the US..these who arrived in the fifties taught their children what they knew so that a lot of the history was incorrect. The real history was not known because it was diverted in schools in Puerto Rico to mask and cover the colonization status to justify to the United Nations its status of commonwealh when in reality it was war trophy and a Colony which to this date continues to have an undefined recognized status. The poverty rate after the Spanish American War grew when the majority of the population being farmers had their land taken or were bought for pennies by the American Sugar Company that created the big sugarcane business that displaced thousands of farmers from country into cities creating slums in San Juan because of lack of housing and creating migration to US. Puerto Rico was a Spanish Province with Spanish Citizenship and representation in the Spanish Government. American citizenship was given conveniently in 1917 where they needed men to fight in World War 1.....Puerto Ricans are mainly of Spanish decent with confirmed DNA of over 60 percent European in a majority and 20 percent African and Taino...being of mainly European decent whom also have mixed heritage which will be reflected in our DNA...we were not a Colony of Spain..we were Spain...learn your history...look it up in the right place.....Ole y Wepa. Pa que tu lo Sepas
