It wasn't bad, when I went into the belfry the sound isn't good Remember also this was tape and pre digital . I think the sound waves actually affected the camera and the recording head on the tape. You could feel the sound through your body especially from the tenor

Thanks for you comments, what really surprises me is that so many videos have been done since and not many are good in the ringing room. There is some fantastic videos in the belfry, type yorkminster tenor in the search bar. A FANTASTIC clip of the tenor covering to Stedman Cinques. I think tht the combo of the tower and the bells is almost a freak of nature. The tenor simply bathes the other bells ringing stedman BEAUTIFUL.

To true, and whilst I am not God's gift to ringing I know the sound of it. I am amazed at how many people cant get simple rounds right, and if you can't do that it is pointess doing anything else. Love you work on Yorkminster tenor, when I need a fix I alway listen that clip of Stedman Cinques, simply brilliant.

I have no idea who rang the tenor, the only person I know is David Potter on the 11th. I agree with you, it was rung like a true pro, and made to look easy. My own view is that if there were to pe a peal of bells in heaven then I think it would be York Minister with the Minster ringers. Just sensational ringing and hte sound is DEVINE. Regards Steve (My dad was a bell hanger for Whitechapel as well)

I learnt plain hunt on 5 the first time I tried it at Great Amwell. But I struggled learning plain hunt on 7 when I started ringing at Ware. But that was because I wasn't used to more bells which expanded and changed the ringing circle. I learnt plain hunt on 9 the first time at All Saints in Hertford at the 10 bell practise. That was a bit hard for me since I am only 14 and the tower is very tall so the Sally was a bit hard to catch! But never mind I'll grow taller for it! Lol!

Mr. Potter's a legend! I agree with you about the long pull at backstroke! They easily flop at hand, not that I did a lot of that.

They are the best peal of bells in the world and I do miss ringing them an awful lot. The other advantage is that they maybe 3 tons but they certainly don't go it. You get used to them fairly quickly. As long as you give a good tug on the handstoke (so to lift the backstroke) your fine. Just remember the old Potter philosophy, "Do as I say, now what you think!", and "Ring by rhythm". Taylors 1925 59-1-23 in B flat. HO HO HO!

Hello Globalman, the tenor at Yorkminster wieghts 3020KGs and is rung by one person, The very reason this is possible is becasue unlike European ringing the bells are rung from an inverted or upright position, this is also the reason why the bells can be rang in changing sequences. At YorkMinster there are 12 bells and the possible unique combinations on 12 is 12 Factorial or 479001600, this would take over 37 years to ring all changes without ever stopping. English Change ringing rocks.

Brilliant. What a noble effort. Hand ringing does sound different to mechanised. Of course these bells are smaller compared to Zurich or Cologne. How many would it take to ring one 600+kg bell I wonder?

Having heard "Bells on Sunday" @ 0543hrs today, which was Stedman Cinques from St Paul's Cathedral, I'd probably have to agree with you. They sounded fantastic and I would love to have been able to stand outside the cathedral and listen!

Yes I did ring, it was only rounds but still I got to ring, Yes I do realise it was cinques and not maximus but thought plain hunt on 11 sounded funny to write. My father Ernie Rowe had never rung at York Minster so it was great to be able to say hey dad guess where I rung. But even though I have loyality to Whitechapel I do think these are the best sounding peal anywhere. Regards Steve

I also have loyalty to Whitechapel, as my hometower are Mears and Stainbank, a very good peal of bells, alothough I am quite baised. These are a good peal of bells, I admit but I have rung on some "Stonking" Whitechapel bells in my time. Many in North Yorkshire. Thanks for the reply, Rob.
