This was a pivotal scene to establish proper hierarchy in the mansion. Blake wasn't going to tolerate his hired staff pushing his wife around as she was now mistress of the house, and they had to be reminded of it in the plainest of terms. Krystle also had to be shown this and know her place over her staff and treat them as such. It wasn't easy for her, being someone from a humble background to have this kind of command but she too had to learn where the lines were drawn and live within them.

The early seasons of Dynasty had some depth, and John Forsythe had authority as Blake...
@tonyatmidnight

Fantastic scene, integral to the class commentary that the first season of DYNASTY so brilliantly fleshed out ... the Upstairs/Downstairs world of the Carrington mansion in which classes collided in awkward sometimes cruel ways was straight out of Masterpiece Theatre. John Forsythe masterfully conducted the character of tycoon Blake Carrington as a tyrant, and Linda Evans always avoided playing Krystle as a wimp by never faltering in her sincere and honest portrayal of a fish out of water, refusing to sink while always struggling against the tide. The relationship was a class conflict within itself, with Blake's role of Pygmalion to Krystle's Eliza echoing centuries of patriarchal dominance over the disadvantaged; the sadistic undercurrent of this scene is even more charged by the fact Krystle is "one of them", the very servant class Blake holds sway over. She is his trophy wife, protecting her as a prized possession, remolding her through proper education, and then, as the season progresses, punishing her when she proves to have a mind of her own, just as he lines up, humiliates and punishes his servants in this scene. This confrontation between classes foreshadows the physical abuse he will eventually inflict upon her. Unfortunately, the very real portrayal of class/sexual conflict would be thrown over for celebrity, camp and a complete fairytale re-write of life in the Carrington mansion for the succeeding seasons. The first season was an acquired taste; to achieve mass popularity, the show had to dumb itself down and not take itself too seriously. Sadly, it had to sacrifice quality. I would have loved to have seen how the Shapiros would have evolved Dynasty if they had been left to their own devices.

@@dreamchaser5758 It happened in the first season (episode entitled "Krystle's Lie"). Pressure had been building on Blake from all fronts - his business, his marriage, his family were all slipping out from under his tight control. Discovering Krystle was financially helping her old flame Matthew Blaisdell behind his back wounded his bruised ego, and finding out Krystle was taking birth control pills without his knowledge pushed him over the brink. Heavily drunk, he demanded Krystle submit to her wifely duties. When she refused, he violently raped her. It was a pretty disturbing scene. A few episodes after that would be when he would kill Steven's ex-boyfriend Ted DiNard in another bout of blind rage.

She was not used to living that way. She wanted to be nice. But you can't always be nice to hired help, they will run all over you. I love this scene. In a way, he was telling Krystal just what he was telling the staff. What he expects. Even out of a wife. No matter how much love he has for her, she needs to know how he expects things to be in his home.

Like the other person said it was a show firing, basically to put the staff in their places and would be amenable to giving Tony a second chance. Blake felt disrespecting Krystle was worse than food walking away or forgetting instructions. Normally it's a bad management practice to reprimand subordinates in front of each other instead of doing it one on one, but in this case the tension between Krystle and the staff escalated to such a point it was really the only way to nip the problem in the bud

Although Dynasty was ABC's version of Dallas, and was similar in the basic premise, that is where the similarities ended. For example, the domestic staff on Dallas were just background props while the domestic staff on Dynasty had names and were frequently a part of the story lines.

This is true in terms of the domestic staff -, Jeanette, Gerard and Mrs (Hilda) Gunnerson, were written a more in the foreground than Dallas. Dallas only really had Teresa and Raul that were well known. Dallas highlighted the office staff more like Sly, Phyllis and Jacqui

This is classic early-Blake behavior. He mellowed out significantly over the following seasons, no doubt due to Krystle's influence. Or rather, he was written that way--his love for Krystle was the only thing that made him sympathetic in those early seasons. But Joseph had more potential to contribute drama and conflict to the story - creepy, secretive, manipulative, possessive and jealous ... he retained much of the Gothic that had been watered down for this modern-day retelling of Daphne du Maurier's "Rebecca". In fact, he was the male version of Mrs Danvers. His personal conflicts with both Mrs Carringtons were fascinating to watch, his slavish loyalty to Blake echoing that long tradition of dark undercurrents in the servant class in the British class system. The writing lost this kind of depth by the forth season when Joseph would be one of the first casualties of a dumber down version of the Shapiro's original version of class conflict drama.
