One of my fave memories is Mr. Shigeta leaving a message on our office answering machine. He couldn't come to our premiere for our indie film but just hearing that voice. It was amazing.

What a beautiful and romantic song. Rogers and Hammerstein were two of the greatest song writers who ever lived! Their music and lyrics brought joy to my world and to the rest of the world!

Couldn't agree more -- I found that part of the musical especially moving. Songwriter Richard Rogers and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein were enormously creative, and their total output was truly monumental

This one song, even just its verse without the wonderful chorus, far surpasses the total output of most of the composers of musical theater in the last sixty years. Its deceptive simplicity (much harder to achieve than complexity) will stand the test of time, I imagine. As an aside, Alfred Newman’s contribution to the outstanding movie score should be appreciated, as should his contribution to the film adaptations of Camelot and The King and I.

This Rodgers and Hammerstein's splendid movie musical has truly showcased an excellent ensemble of the all-star Asian-American actors -"the eminently-talented ones" like the debonair Mr James Shigeta and the darling Ms Miyoshi Umeki. In this stimulating-and-excruciating romantic-sequence the starry-eyed Wang Ta ( Mr Shigeta ) is heartily-and-juicily conveying his solicited love towards the teary-eyed Mei Li ( Ms Umeki ) by way of his well-rendered idyllic-serenade.Ms Umeki has conclusively delivered a de facto non-exaggerated and even-tempered performance. Her utterance of the poignant dialogues is exclusively efficacious and loquacious. Even if the songs of Flower Drum Song are not as instantly-considerable as those of The Sound of Music and South Pacific, they are still in some way commendable and favorable. This grand classic is one of the most blessed musicals ever lights up the silver screen as a result of a hundred million miracles are still happening every day.

Some of the cast members were Chinese in background - Nancy Kwan, Kam Tong, Benson Fong, Victor Sen Young, and James Hong. As you probably know, the great Juanita Hall (Bloody Mary from the Broadway and screen versions of SOUTH PACIFIC) was African American. Very diverse cast, for the early 1960s, as you suggest.

In the book, May Li (Mei Li) was poor, a street performer, and a household servant. She did not meet the expectations of Master Wang for a daughter-in-law. However, he had to accept his son's foolish desire to be independent. In the film, Master Wang approved of Mei Li because of her traditional values and upbringing.

Agreed. She was lovely. I was a little girl when this show was first aired, and my friends and I couldn't understand why Mr. Eddie's Father didn't marry Mrs. Livingston. She was beautiful, kind, wise, a wonderful homemaker, loved Eddie. Of course this would have eliminated the entire premise of the show, cancelled its central storyline. But we didn't know that, being just kids.
