Great tutorial, Blake! Yes Linear Light is a superior blend mode for this kind of work. For absolute colour-control I use the Luminosity blend mode on a Curves adjustment instead of a 50 % filled layer nowadays. Not only do I avoid any colour-shift that way but I also get a total control over local contrast with the Curve at the same time! On top of that the Curve adjustment protects the absolute blacks and whites from clipping in the histogram ( as long as the white and black points are untouched in the Curve tool ). This way I can fine-tune my curve to make sure my “Burning” is going to have less or more contrast, -and the same goes for the “Dodging” of course. Would you agree?

I think you should change the title from, "You are dodging and burning all Wrong!" to "Are you dodging and burning just one way!" I played around with this technique a number of years back and like it for certain situations and dislike it for others. I use this technique, along with 50% soft light, and my personal favorite is using curves. The most important thing to remember! With some pictures, you might experience "color shifts". Some People use the curves and 50% fill layer set to luminosity or linear light to avoid these shifts. I recommend against it because adding light SHOULD affect the color. (If you look at a blue pen in the dark it will look gray, but move the pen into the light and you see blue.) So light, in fact, make everything become saturated. A hue/sat adjustment layer allows me to control HOW MUCH the light is going to affect the saturation. When you blend it "Linear light" or "Luminosity" it doesn't affect saturation at all and everything can start to look grayish after a while if one isn't careful. Love your videos.

WOW! GAME CHANGER! I cannot tell you how often I have struggled with skin tones after I dodge and burn on the traditional gray layer in Soft Light. You are absolutely correct. Color do get over saturated easily. I often would put the blend mode to Luminosity in hopes that the color stay true or reduce the flow of the dodge tool. Your explanation and examples were fantastic. This is exactly what I needed. No one has even taught how Linear Light affects photos (except to sharpen in High Pass). Thank you for this. Anxious to try it out now.

This is a good tip, but I don't agree that it's better. It can have very unwanted results - I'm a vfx/cgi artist and soft light tends to work much better as you also use it to punch the contrast. One is better for the light , your method is better for the dark, but both methods have drawbacks, I prefer to separate my darken to a multiply layer and my lighten to a screen layer. However most of the time I do dodge and burn directly on the original image with brush, I can undo if not happy, I have always the raw file to return to, and using photoshop the least always give better results, because if you have to use it a lot, it's because you need better shots from the camera. When a shot is good, really, what's more powerful than the truth ? With so many years of photoshop, I'm so happy when I don't need it. Photoshop is just a time suck, like candy crush. The shot has other problems, and does not require dodge nor burn.

I've tried this method, and I found it's not as effective as the traditional method. In particular, the linear light method doesn't brighten dark circles under the eyes as well as the traditional method (keeps some dark tones), and if you increase the fill, it easily becomes too harsh. The soft light method also blends better with the skin than this method does. For D&B, I'm using only a blank layer with the soft light blend (not 50% gray), and the brush tool with a 1-2% flow and default foreground and background colors, so that I can also use an eraser tool. For me, this works perfectly.

@f64Academy

Lol, not really. The problem with duplicating the layer and D and B on that is that it is not conducive to a layered workflow. Anytime you add a duplicate copy or a stamped layer you can really only work above it and the work below it is not as important anymore. This way you can maintain a healthy layered workflow. Its not harder, its smarter ;)

Great work Blake, is this going to be added to your Dodge & Burn Pro Panel? or should I just use the action separately?🥰😀👍👌

Not necessarily. But you can still use the idea with that panel, just have to change the blend modes.

Wow, I am deeply impressed by that simple idea which works amazing! Esp the quick D&B enhances whole images at one click and its so fast to mask it out. Thank you!
