I relate to Adrianne’s situation. Me and my family live in a middle class neighborhood. Racism from my neighbors weren’t very direct but for the longest time we felt unwelcome and come to know a lot of our neighbors thought we were just renting the house because we couldn’t afford it. Until they saw us building stuff did they really know paid off our home.

When I first moved into my neighborhood, I had a racist neighbor that complained about my parking ON A ONE WAY STREET daily. He would leave notes on my car about parking closer, yet nobody else does that. I was the first to leave in the morning and last to park at night due to school and work. One day I got so fed up and ‘kindly’ called him out on it. I told him that he needed to stop with the notes and that he knew that I was not the first person to park and always the first to leave. Oh I happened to be the one black woman on the block btw. Long story short, he stopped leaving me letters on my car and now ignores me. Just how I like it. His wife always waves hello to me now.

Know one or two at least be friendly enough cos they could be the difference in a sticky situation. I once lost my keys and needed to get a hammer to break the lock. Since I wasn't known in the neighbourhood, as soon as I was seen with an hammer going at the lock someone approached me taking the hammer from me accusing me of trying to break into someone else apartment. I had to go get the landlady before the accusation stopped and I was allowed to go ahead. They thought I was an angry girlfriend trying to get into the apartment. I had one racist neighbor that I know of. This guy was crazy AF. I live in Jersey and I just moved into this new apartment right above him. It was a townhouse setup so I had to walk by his apartment in order to go upstairs to mine. After I moved in, I had two friends over to help me straighten everything up. At this point I've only lived in the apartment for 7 days. My friends and I were talking in the living room. We weren't loud at all. Then out of nowhere we hear shut up N***** come from downstairs😳. I made a compliant to the the police just so i can have it documented. I later learned he was a drunk and had some mental issues. That was the only racial incident but the energy was so toxic. I am became soooo paranoid and had a weapon at my beside just in case he tried to break in. I only made 4 months then I left. I know how to protect myself effectively but I got tired of not feeling at home in my own home.

When I was young, around 22 years old, I interned at a Jewish company and one of the bosses didn’t like me. I had no idea why. I had never caused any bad feelings between us but he was so nasty to me. I can only assume it was because he thought I was Muslim, as I have a very common Muslim last name. On the day my father died, I showed up to work anyway because I had a task to finish and because my father was in a different state and I needed to wait to hear about what the funeral plans would be. When I made a small mistake with transferring the phonecall to this boss, he came to the front and yelled at me. I went into my little office and cried because my dad had died and I chose to come to a place where I would be berated. I ended up telling HR my father passed and I needed to go. When I returned to work a week later, that boss, for whatever reason, had a complete shift in behavior towards me. I don’t know if he felt bad knowing my father had died and that he yelled at me when I was going through such pain or if maybe, for the first time, he was able to see me as just a young 22 year old girl who was around the same age as his own daughter who had just lost her father, instead of seeing me as the enemy. Either way, from that day forward, that boss never once mistreated me. I’m sure I was one of his favorite workers there by the time I left. It took time but I was grateful for his change of heart towards me and he ended up being a wonderful mentor to me.

I personally could not be in a space where I have to deal with that on a daily basis… cuz we’re in a time where the new normal pretty soon is gonna be where mixed families & minorities will soon become the majority and we can’t keep allowing racists and bigoted people to continue forth in in society without doing something about it as a whole nation

and then the racism will morph into lighter skin vs darker skin like in latin america. This erroneous belief that because blacks and whites mix and there are more mix kids are born that racism will end baffles me. It almost sounds like let's mix so we can all be better off. I love my blackness and i love who i am and i have absolutely no desire to mix with anyone who doesn't want to mix with me. That's interesting, I have heard alot of ppl who were raised in the hood say they didn't experience racism until later in life and it absolutely makes sense. I grew up being one of the only if not the only black person in school so I have been racially discriminated against as early as kindergarten. I was told " I don't want to sit next to that black girl". As far as neighbors, there were many times especially when we first moved there. My Dad would normally handle it and he made good friends with the police dept after they were always called on us for no reason. My Parents also made sure the school administrators knew them by name so that when someone tried to speak ill of us the administrator could know that it wasn't true because they only had positive experiences of us. This was 25 years ago so I'm sure my parents would handle things diff if it were today.

I like Garcelle's answer. I'm not into battling and confrontation either especially with someone who lives next door so I would do what she says, "Kill em with kindness" just to live in peace. I am pretty good at ignoring and shrugging off bad people. I am not hot tempered and I am very passive/timid. I am working on becoming more assertive. I was bullied nearly everyday on the school bus for being the only Asian in the neighborhood. Thankfully they were a couple of grades older than me so eventually I was free when they graduated and moved onto middle school. They screamed racial slurs and threw rocks at our house too. I honestly and embarrassingly just stood there in silence while getting mocked, harassed, assaulted, and bullied. I think I only told my parents once so they never knew the extent of it. We never reported it to the school either. I guess I was an awkward mute child. I don't know.

I'm not even from those places and they used derogatory terms frequently, the school even covered up theft from my locker. I used to come home crying asking my mum why no one would play with me and wish I was white so they would be nice to me. All of them that were racist were Irish. Funny thing is, Irish are one of the 'highest in number' immigrants in England. Those same racists ended up having Black boyfriends and Indian girlfriends lol. I'm the type of person that speaks to my neighbors in passing. It could be something as simple as a Hello, Good Morning, How's your day, ect... It's that simple greeting that begins a dialogue, that begins a connection, that in turn builds relationships. Flip that same coin, respect is earned, not given. I used to live in this small cul-de-sac neighborhood. At first I was not feeling it, but over the years I grew to appreciate it. My daughter grew up in that neighborhood, she had friends, went to school nearby, it was a God send. I remember one day I walking my daughter in her stroller around the neighborhood. (Trying to get to go to sleep) It was during the summer and the sun was setting later. I was actually enjoying the weather because it wasn't so hot as it was earlier that day. (I live in the South...you get the idea.) Anyway, I was walking down a side street and I saw someone walking into their home. I waved and kept moving. I kept circling the block a few times, like I said I was trying to get her to go to sleep 💤. By this time I pulled her seat back so she was fully laying down. By the 3x around and I was ready to go back home. I noticed that the police officer who lived in the neighborhood was on his way home. I pulled over closer to the curb and he went passed me to turn. Then I noticed that he circled back. I thought maybe he got a call. When his car pulled up beside me, I jumped and screamed. He apologized for startling me. Of course my daughter woke up crying. That neighbor called the cops because she thought I was "casing" the neighborhood. Hell, I've lived there longer than he had. The cop was asking me all kinds of questions and wanted to file a police report. I said for what, I didn't do anything but walk my daughter around the neighborhood. By now the temperature had really dropped and it was dark outside. I was a little shaken, but trying to stay calm for my daughter. When he asked for my address, I said down the street. He asked again and I said just the street name. He asked for my ID, didn't have it on me. By now I was really scared and upset. I said I need to get my daughter home. You're welcome to follow me. Long story short, when the cop saw where I lived, that's when he recognized me. He called the neighbor back and said all was well.

They're most probably like that because of the brainwashing white colonials brought to these countries. Also they know white people have the upper hand in society. Here in the UK, racism is subtle and not upfront like the USA, they pretend they're not racist but they are.

I'm not concerned wheather or not white people accept me as their own or not...I really don't even want them too...I want black people and Asian people to accept me as their own as I am one of them...but they don't because I'm light skin and they feel that because of that I'm privileged somehow and don't need any kind of help...which most of the time I do...so therefore I have to work harder achieve more and basically fend for myself to prove myself...it's like the Beyonce complex...people think she has it made and that she doesn't need any help...that why she works so hard to keep proving to the world that things aren't just handed to her from the sky...my own people fail to realize this about their light skinned family...we're made to just shut up and take it because they think they're more discriminated than us...it's very bizarre

@@thegoldenbowl5217 @the goldenbowl it sounds to me like you're surrounded by mainly Black and Asian people. You need to be exposed to more White people to know where they're coming from lol. Every race should accept you, not just Black and Asian, because we are all humans, we all die, no race is better than the other. I come from London which is very multicultural and I can tell you skin tone does make a difference wherever you are. If you go to Asia they prefer lighter skin tones. You go to the Caribbean same thing. In fact black people have been denied entry to neighbouring countries in Eastern Europe compared to lighter ethnicities when escaping the war in Ukraine compared to lighter skinned people. My dad is Indian and Portuguese but born and raised in Africa. Even he said the Africans were treated terribly IN THEIR OWN country compared to Indians and Whites because they were darker. My point is just like White people have privilege so do you amongst your own people. If your own people had to choose between a lighter and dark person, they'd favour the lighter. It's due to white colonialism. I am light skinned and you have to empathise with darker people because they do have it harder, maybe then they'd be more kind to you too if they can see how you understand them. I am mixed too and I understand how it feels to not be accepted by either side but you have to understand why they are like this. However I don't think Beyonce had to work harder because she's lighter, I think that made life easier for her. I never saw Kelly Rowland or Michelle do as well as her, and they are as talented. Why? Because this is a White man's world, even if you don't want to be accepted by them, they control those industries and prefer skin tones closer to theirs because of the racial bias, so Beyonce fit that bill, same with Rihanna, they are both whitewashed. Look at Normani, Camilla Cabello had more exposure, same with Adrienne and Naturi in 3LW. They favoured Adrienne but tried to downplay Naturi. I work in the entertainment industry and the racism is highly based on skin tone. My dad has this saying "If you're black you have to stay back but if you're white you're alright" lol. It seems you're in a mainly Black and Asian community so you can't understand or care for racism from White people but I can guarantee your own people are like this because their generations have been brainwashed to think lighter is better and white is the best. Why do you think Filipinos are always mixing? Because they have an Inferior complex about their own people. They think having mixed kids produces better looking kids that'll be more accepted. They're culture is based on looks, that's why they are obsessed with beauty pageants, all the contestants I've seen are mixed. Hardly any full Filipinos in there. If they treat you like a Latino then why don't you make friends with some Latinos lol, they might accept you because of your looks, or make friends with some or Asian ethnicities, or befriend some White people, your outlook may change and theirs too.

No I'm not surrounded by mainly black and filippinos...in fact I'm hardly surrounded by them ..I grew up in Santa Barbara where the majority of people were rich and white and they have accepted me wholeheartedly into their families and communities and I don't ever recall an instance where they ever discriminated against me based on how I looked...it's only when I travel to see my biological family I'm discriminated...it's when I'm in black circles that I'm discriminated...that's all I'm saying...black people hate it when whites or other races discriminate against them but turn around and use those same practices on their own families...that's all I'm saying...it's crazy

The neighbors my bf and I used to live next to are demons. We lived where it was a split driveway, clearly we had our own side, they had theirs. Nearly every single day they would park their big a$$ truck across the line into our side of the driveway. Couldn’t park in my own driveway some days. We raised hell eventually. Had it out with them the day we moved out. They used to exchange drugs with the neighbors on the other side of us. Their two dogs also bit & killed this lady’s dog. Nothing was done about it besides court fees. I told the police, nothing was done besides asking them can they move their truck so we can park in our own driveway- we pay rent for. They put up a racist sign towards our window saying “All lives matter except yours” written in horribly ugly hand writing. They probably had their kid do it. Smh.. & some but it’s too long to write.. but yea.

They have to overcompensate by putting you down for *no reason.* (Other than the fact they are empty hollow vessels-they are lacking _soul_ -don’t know _how_ to be happy and truly enjoy life - so they have to minimize you just to appear a wee bit “bigger” in their pathetic *uptight little *uppity tiny worlds).

Me and my husband live in a brand new home in a brand new development where all the houses are quite nice. Unfortunately the people who live across from us don't like the fact that we are an interracial couple and have caused nothing but problems for us since we've moved here and because we don't fit in that quintessential box of theirs they have a problem. Me and my husband work extremely hard and all we want to do is relax when we get home but instead were more worried about them calling the city or calling the police or trying to get are car towed or complaining that our hedges are 2 in over it's been extremely stressful and depressing to say the least. My husband always wants to say things but I've just chosen to not complain about the things that they do on purpose because I feel like it's just going to fuel the racist Behavior.

When they go low we go high mentality is good for certain situations but, not as it relates to racism. A lot of racism from white people go unreported or checked because black people ignore it or are tired of dealing with. In my undergraduate; the Dean of student affairs had to push people of color to report instances of racism because a lot of the white students were becoming increasingly aggressive towards minority students. The FBI had to be called in after notes were passed around asking for all students of color to leave the college or face a racial cleansing. To add insult to injury the school sweep all of this under the rug and tried to handle it “privately”.

With the amount of defunding in the police department unless your house got broken into or you got into a physical altercation with that neighbor the dispatch will tell you to just fill out a report online 😂😂😂. I had a “homeless” gentleman that moved into the empty lot right next to my house and basically became my neighbor. He would come onto my property days in a row and sit on my patio and charge his phone on my outdoor wall outlets. The first time it happened I was TERRIFIED because he looked completely intoxicated! The police took 6 hours to show up. Of course by this time the homeless guy was no longer on my property. I had camera footage of the guy and the police didn’t even bother to see the footage. The police told me they could only arrest the homeless guy if the police officers got there while the homeless guy was on my property and if he was on the empty lot next to my house they would only be able to arrest him if the owners of that property called to say he was trespassing. The homeless guy was there for MONNNTTTHHSSS until the homeless guy started breaking into a few peoples houses in blocks near by then the city had to get involved. For context I live in a predominantly white neighborhood but I am Hispanic and the police is not much help anymore. Between the defunding and covid GOOD LUCK CHARLIE 😂😂we are all on our own!
