I've been teaching my girlfriends son to pick out the silver coin from clad, and vice versa, just from the sound the silver coins make when shaking them in his hand. He can also tell the sound of a silver coin dropped on a table, with his back turned so he can't see the coins as I drop them.

I found 4 counterfeit dimes in my bags of dimes. I have been educating kindly to my LCS owner. He knows how knowledgeable I am so he heald an 1879cc for me to look at before purchasing. I showed that it was a counterfeit. I could tell it was copied from an original coin from possible molding clay. Found pitting, bubbles, high spots, and sound test failed. Weighed correct but didn't look like silver. He was very appreciative and thanked me.

Great video Daniel! Thank you! A huge clue in this video that jumped out to me was the part that the clad coins do not shine like silver coins. I saw this with my Kennedy Half Dollar book, even the 40% Silver shined more bright than the couple Bicentennial Clads I have in there. That will be a way to look through those generic dates Dime books I have.

Great points and info, Daniel !!I have received doctored and other counterfeit dimes and one cents that were in bags and rolls from a few of You Tube auction sellers I purchased. I know it was probably an oversight and not a purposeful passing along of counterfeit coins. But It just underscores these counterfeits do work their way into the mainstream and only when one takes the time to have a closer look (and know what to look for as you mentioned) do they get weeded out. Unless it was a single high price purchase, my action is to take the counterfeit and discard it so it never again gets circulated into any collections or sales. Bottom line, any coin you take in, give it a good evaluation.

Great video! I didn't know the extent of counterfeiting and mixing in of fake silver dimes and I guess rolls of other denominations as you stated. The last time I received a fake was back in the 1979-80 coin boom and found a lead Morgan Dollar mixed in with others. It did look very crude and different but with all the excitement of the boom, it slipped by. Dealers were going to smelters several times a day because of changing bullion prices! Be well! Ed

In the ancient world counterfeiters of gold and silver were publicly executed. In this day and age all manner of thieves get a slap in the wrist. From counterfeiters, burglars, cheats, con-men, embezzlers, etc they all pretty much get away Scott free. Our system is badly broken. Those deserving of punishment seldom get it while law abiding folks are taken to task and made examples of for the slightest infractions. Steal an old lady's purse and you get nothing. Go fishing without a license and you get crucified. It ain't right. Anyway, I only buy from brick and mortar coin dealers and reputable online coin dealers. Never Facebook or eBay.

Sure, of course they are counterfeited. Everything that can be counterfeited and sold at a profit can and will be. Fun fact: In the US it is illegal to counterfeit any kind of coinage or money, as well as any type of antiquity. In China, it is illegal to counterfeit Chinese money and Chinese antiquities. Other coins, bills, antiquities and any non-Chinese intellectual Properties are completely unregulated. It's perfectly legal (in China) for Chinese companies to manufacture fakes of anything they want, so long as it is not originally made in China. They can't sell it there, but they an export it. So coins, currency, shoes, purses, Pokemon cards, watches, whatever flows from China all over the world. Most countries have laws against counterfeit items, so the respective customs organizations are always watching for it, but there's so much it's like looking for a needle in a haystack sized pile of other needles.
