I believe Prince said it was the best version he had heard. She had a troubled life. Her mother I believe left her, she came out about catholic priests and her career was affected. She lost her son and then she died at the age of 56 in 2023.

She unfairly became a social pariah…it made me so mad that, that one moment turned everything upside down, and then she spiraled for so long…I was so happy she was doing well after her long battle with depression, and then suddenly her son dies😞and she’s thrown back into a state of depression and mourning for her son…I believe his death was a turning point, and she couldn’t come back from it…she died of a broken heart, and that reason kills me because I thought Sinead was an amazing woman with a heart so big…ugh…brings me tears just writing about her.😞💔

@@roger1296not unfairly. She said pretty nasty things. She also said some true things. However her beliefs kept her from delineating between groups. So she attacked all Americans. She could have written songs that nuanced her beliefs, but she used her concerts and televised platforms to attack. So she flushed her career and ability to get her message out, right down the drain.

Her tears were genuine. She had recently reconnected with her mother, with whom she’d had a difficult relationship, but just before recording this her mother had died. She had said that when she sung the lyric “all the flowers that you planted, mamma, died when you went away” she was thinking of her mother, and the tears came naturally. Sinead always wore her heart on her sleeve - she was raw, honest and passionate, and I for one always loved her for that in addition to her wonderful voice.

It was written by Prince, but he didn't record a proper version of it until after Sinead O'Connor had made it a hit around the world. He wrote it in 1984 for a side project he had with a group called The Family (you can find their version on YT). He recorded a demo of it at this time, but didn't record his 'proper' version of it until 1993, some 3 years after Sinead.

A couple things about the song itself, one I knew already one I found out while watching a Sinead documentary. The song was written by Prince as we all know but it wasn't to be a song for him. He wrote it for an upcoming band on his new label called "The Family". They didn't make it to the big time sadly but when Prince heard Sinead's version he basically gave her the song. He didn't want her version to be called a cover version because it was too good. What I didn't know until the documentary was that Prince actually wrote this about his long term housekeeper. She basically did everything for him, all he had to do every day was get up , get dressed into the clothes already laid out for him. Go into his music room and write songs and play guitar. Everything else was done by her. However her dad fell ill and she had to leave and move away and he had no idea how to manage. He didn't even know where the shops were, that is what the line means near the end "All the flowers that you planted ..... etc" is about. When Sinead sang that verse it made her think of her mum who had recently been buried and it made her cry. She had a bad relationship with her mum mostly but had reconciled before losing her. Great reaction and RIP Sinead, like Delores, gone way too soon.
