Nice. I'm pretty sure every Deicide riff ever is based on--and a variation of--a Slayer riff. (I love Deicide btw).

Cool video! I’m definitely more into writing deathcore than thrashier stuff, but I can totally use these tips. Especially since you can see the influences from older metal. Thanks!

@@mitchavedon definitely does! There’s a lot of influence from older metal in modern deathcore, it’s just evolved and has a different context

Great video and advice, however I have some thoughts about the tone: for videos like this it would be better to leave more mids (instead of scooping them) and adding some bass or taming the treble a bit. Second move would be to add a TS-type booster before the amp (only to increase the tightness or "chug", not for more gain).

Great video but where the video fails for me is the inspiration part I don't know the song you are referencing so I don't know what you did in this section Maybe on screen tabs would have worked Would be interesting to see you transform from First Fragment Riffs

Yeah it's essentially based of the Stealth/Ibanez Xiphos designs. It's a Balaguer Tartarus. I was definitely inspired by Chuck to get a guitar built like this

Think you pretty much covered all the bases here. I've used everything you mentioned at some point or another. Anytime the well's dry, I just shift my focus to learning a new song, solo, exercise, etc. It's mostly futile trying to force yourself to write, and will likely leave you feeling uninspired and frustrated. Most of my best stuff comes spontaneously when I'm trying to practice something else or exploring a new plug-in/fx pedal. The trick (at least for me) is to avoid "trying" to write altogether - just erase that concept from your mind, and let it come when it comes. Inspiration isn't something you command, it's more random and unplanned. Anyways, the vid has a lot of great insight for anyone unfamiliar or less-advanced. Only thing I would've added is fiddling with diminished and augmented shapes, another practically-required metal trope for that classic "devilish" vibe. 🤘

my question is if you take a riff say down with the sickness and you change it won't other bands know if you used it ?
@mitchavedon

You don't want to actually just rip off a riff 1 for 1, just draw inspiration from riffs you like and use them to develop your own ideas
