Even though Matt played on the final product of UYI I & II, excluding Civil War, a majority of the drum tracks were written when Steven was still in the band. @@BryanValentineMcalister your correct it’s a matter of taste but for the life of me I can’t understand why anyone would think Matt has a better sound then Adler. Adler has swing, sound, off beats, not the norm. While Matt sounds like EVERY single hard rock drummer that came across the table. I call it “meat and potatoes drumming”. I mean even his fills are just blah! I taught my 12 year old son Matt’s fills on songs like November rain and don’t cry in like 3 min and no he isn’t a gifted drummer. I mean the only good drumming songs on UYI was done by Adler. I mean just look at his drumming in the previous band he was in “the cult”. There’s nothing special there. Can he hold a great beat he’ll yeah no doubt. If Matt was the original drummer on APF, those songs would sound like hit trash. Sorry my man. Matt is a run of the mill drummer at best. For those of you who continue to hate on Matt, can I say something PLEASE? He did not "take" Steven's job. Matt was hired. You all know the story. I was fortunate enough to see Matt Sorum two times with Guns N' Roses during the Use Your Illusion tour. Matt poured his heart and soul into that band. He never once gave up, not even on one single note. Each time I saw them live, it was truly a religious experience. It felt like they were nuclear powered with Matt and his vibe somehow pushed the rest of the band into another level...NOT hating on Steve. My friends and I saw GN'R once in Summer 1991 while still with Izzy and Skid Row as opening band and once with Gilby while co-headlining with Metallica in Summer of 1992. Regardless of how anyone feels about who is the more suitable/better style of drummer for GN'R (God only knows), without Matt, though, that double disc album "Use Your Illusion 1&2," "The Spaghetti Incident" cover album, and that massive world tour from Summer of 1991 to Summer of 1993 would never have happened. I will go so far as to say that AFD could only have happened with Steven Adler and UYI could only have happened with Matt. It was almost as if the universe had designed it that way. Of course, just an opinion. Yes, I always loved the style of Steven Adler and the whole 1985 to 1988 AFD era of incremental building of Guns N' Roses into an international sensation.

Totally agree. Matt came in at a time when they needed a kick ass drummer. Steven was just not cutting it anymore. Matt crushes it on those Illusion 1 & 2 LP's. Made GnR sound majestic as Zeppelin did on 'Presence'. Drum sound is nothing less than massive on Illusion. Even on Adler's best day he could not have brought the band what Matt Sorum did in '91.The perfect drummer for them at that point in time.

Matt is way more precise. He's like a machine, but not in a bad or synthetic way (Steven even described him like this in an interview). Adler is more of an everyman's drummer. He's great at doing his thing; dirty club rock (which is my favorite kind of music). I actually love hearing a missed beat at live shows, it makes the music feel more real and alive. He's way out of his comfort zone doing arena filling ballads and anthems of the UYI albums though. He'd probably do better than Frank, but that's not saying much. I'd be tickled to death if either one could rejoin the band. They both fill an important piece of it's history.
