George, your lessons have been critical to my advancement as a player. My first open mic song was Heart of Gold with harp and guitar - which you taught me. I'm working on this one now. I have been playing Long may you Run - another Neil Young cover with Key of D harp - also one you taught me. Thanks much!

very helpful video and it's great to see you doing the harp parts as well. A deceptively simple tune but it's got a real mojo. One suggestion: I believe Tom is playing not A but Asus2 at the end of the chorus when he sings “to be me”.

Just keep trying. I have been busking for 4 years. I would try harmonica and guitar at the same time for the first year with little success. I gave up on it for a year. And then after that year of no harmonica and guitar (2 years of busking) I tried again. It was suddenly easy. I think the key is getting to the point where you don't even have to think about the guitar - it gives the cognitive mind the freedom to focus on working on the harmonica. And then when both come together without thinking, magic happens! I'm still not quite there with most songs, but with some....

@@TheCosmicBusker I can totally relate. I've described the "freedom" that comes from practicing and engraining the guitar and harp parts into subconscious memory as "magical" also. When they come together and the harp parts come through on the correct beats, along with the guitar, it's a pretty fantastic feeling.

This is a great video, thank you. But the song is not in the key of E; it's in the key of A. You wouldn't have a D major chord in the key of E. In the key of A, the ii chord would normally be minor, but since the Bsus4 has no third, it still works in the key. But again -- GREAT tutorial; thank you very much!

Already know how to play this song but I’m getting a harmonica set in the mail soon. Awesome tutorial! P.s. Try adding Asus2 at the end of the chorus when he sings “to be meeeee”. It sounds really good and adds more depth!

This may seem like a strange question, but how do you keep your mustache from getting caught in the harp?! I have a full mustache/goatee and I always get one or two yanked out while playing...brings tears to your eyes!

Hi Mike. I have gotten my mustache hairs caught lots of times. You'll see it in some of my videos. It is an occupational hazard. Either trim up or grin and bear it.

My only question is how the heck do I do that on stage. Petty has a harmonica player behind him playing the e harp then switches to the a and back to the e. I've seen Tom in concert. ??????? Great lesson, please feel free to suggest to me the switch. I can tell you like Mr. Petty. RIP TOM GREAT TUNE.

Do you recommend a way to switch out the harmonicas in the middle of the song? Should I just skip the using the 2nd harmonica and leave the E on the neck holder the whole time?

You can play the whole song with one harmonica. Check the Petty video: he doesn't switch harps.

@@digitalolive hey steve...I play that song with harp and guitar. the riff is just a walk down starting on blow 5...I'm wondering if we are talking about the same thing...people I've played for recognize the song the minute the harp kicks in...

@@lonesomelou4188 I’m talking about the really short bit at 2:08 in the song. It ends with a draw 1 on an A harp and then that little bass line happens right before the guitar solo part. It’s really so short that I usually just skip it but if you have someone else playing guitar with you while you grab your A, it can be kind of cool.

@@digitalolive Steve, you launched me into exploration mode...I actually played the main riff on an E harp,a C harpand an A harp just now...the part you're referring to involves a slight bend of a note, which I'm not good at.. anyway, I'm done investigating...lol...the chord pattern is interesting...I don't know if it's the circle of 4ths (e a d) or the key of A...any thoughts on that?

@@GeorgeGoodmanMusic There is another magnetic harp holder on the market. It is the Seydel Gecko made by Pete Farmer in Michigan. I have one on order with a dual harp holder attachment. I've been looking for something better than the standard spring loaded. And it's THIS song that was the final straw to try it out!

Cheers and thank you again, George. You have influenced my music journey more than I can express here. Peace! - Chris
