Mr. Shuji’s eclectic barbershop is truly unique 💈 His family opened the shop more than 80 years ago when they moved to Takayama during WWII. Mr. Shuji was born in Takayama. He is 77 years old and has been barbering for over 60 years.
Mr. Shuij is such a fun and energetic person ❤️ He did share with us his diet and exercise regime that keeps him healthy and fit!
His mom and dad worked as barbers, and he really loved the atmosphere of their shop while growing up 😊
At a young age, he began collecting things. He recalls being interested in the dish his grandmother’s dog ate from. He liked it so much he asked if he could have it. The family thought it was a silly request, but they gave it to him and he kept it in his bedroom.
During his childhood, he remembers being poor and his family having hardships. Since they couldn't afford to buy things, he would receive items from people and fix them to play with. He also collected rocks he found in the mountain and rivers ⛰️
When he was younger, he came across this piece of wood while swimming in the river. He was drawn to it because he thought it resembled a crane.
Hanging inside the shop you’ll see his collections of colorful wall pocket vases, and on display are vintage cameras and advertising memorabilia (cutouts of celebrities).
Above the mirror on the wall is this amazing dragon he hand made with plaster 👨🏼🎨 It was sculpted directly onto the wall and took three months to complete.
With Mr. Shuji’s collections, it all made sense to hear that the nostalgic retro museum in town is his creation! 👉🏼 showakan.jp/takayama/
Also, he has honey for sale at the local farmer’s market 🍯
✨ Mr. Shuji’s life advice is, “Be cheerful; don’t fret about things.”
