Melvin is a complicated and flawed man suffering from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, probably Narcissitic Personality Disorder and some other behavioral issues, but somethings have touched him and moved him beyond his routines that were propping up his life but never allowing him to grow. He was caged and trapped and angry about it all. But then he takes in a little dog and the dog opens him up to the possibility that he can love and grow and he sees Helen, who was once confined to his compulsive disorder in a box, and she breaks into his world, his life, and he falls in love with her and by the end she comes to love him. Who knows if they succeed, they have a lot going against them as a couple, but a lot going for them too. Wonderful film.

NPD is too loosely used nowadays. Probably more like on the spectrum ..... asperges? It's a neuro issue not a mental health/ personality disorder. (Obvs accepting the OCD diagnosis asca given). The problem is / for us on the receiving end .... narcissism, autism, adhd or just general jerk off'ery, it is soooo hard to deal with what can be extremely hurtful, mean, selfish behaviour. It sucks regardless of the source causation.

I can’t imagine forgetting what an absolute masterpiece this movie is. Ever. I couldn’t tell how many times I’ve watched it. Or how many dozens of times I’ve watched this particular scene. And every time. Every. Time. It gets me. Every. Single. Time. It’s in every aspect of the scene. The writing. The acting. The facial expressions. The voices. The music. The fact that, half a second before he says it, the volume gets taken down. Just 1 notch. But just that one notch, that focuses the attention just that much more on the words. Perfect. His voice. When he says it, his voice, his intonation changes. There’s no sarcasm in it. No defensiveness. No subterfuge. Just openness. He says it, he means it fully. Perfect. Her face, when what he’s said really sinks in. Just perfect.

Most married men or those in long term relationships I've seen many of them don't do or have any of the things that brought them comfort before the relationship. Most male friends I've had over the years once they got married, they threw out or sold almost all the furniture they owned before the relationship, they don't or rarely ever play video games, they don't stay out late drinking with their buddies, they don't make their own choices, wear the clothes they want, drive the car they want or go on vacations they want. It's because they've been fixed (similar to a dog) to better match to a women's wants and desires. This guy was probably better off not taking antipsychotic medication because most of that medication causes the very thing it promises to avoid. But now to appease her he started taking it again which this may end up killing his creativity which will make him a shitty writer, hell lose his job and his expensive apartment in Manhattan as a result and he'll be homeless or die in a ditch somewhere, meanwhile she will have already moved on to the next rich writer living in Manhattan, or moved back in with her mom which didn't seem like that bad of a situation to be honest

One of the best aspects of this movie is how they treat OCD with respect, is not like Melvin fell in love and that cured him, he fell in love, and that made him try to be a better person, starting therapy and taking the medicine, and by the end of the movie, we see it is actually working. Most romantic comedies would have love being some magical cure for any illness, but here they take the time to make it clear that is not the case.
