Technically Armstrong uses a weapon, he basically uses a kind of brass knuckles that are combined with gauntlets to make it easier to grapple as well. Easy work around be a paladin, equip brass knuckles...go fist of the north star with smites, bonus points to dip into monk for flurry of blows, or fighter for action surge.

Welp unarmed strike smites are already allowed RAW. It says a melee weapon attack, but unarmed strikes actually count as melee weapon attacks, it was even confirmed. Otherwise monks wouldn't be able to stunning strike with their fists since it also mentions melee weapon attacks. Guess D&D wiews ''these hands' as a valid weapon option.

@@TeraclonPaladins could be stereotypical lawful stupid characters… or they could be what most pallys are, actual characters with morals and ideas beyond follow law, retake holy land. Also they only have that dpr is you’re in melee, and willing to forgo half of being a paladin, and also that dpr isn’t that good. Basically, you’re falling into the classic fifth edition fallacy of overrating Divine Smite. Don’t do that. Paladins are usually pretty good to have at your table unless it’s a stereotypical unfun one. Paragon, unconditionally heroic paladins are fun to have around, the stereotype from editions before 4th is not, and as previously stated the dpr isn’t that crazy and has a bad opportunity cost. TL;DR Play what you want, mostly how you want, and flavor is free so if you want the paladin gameplay loop but none of the paladin flavor, yeah sure, have fun with that.

Great class. However for those who are trying to figure out the RP side of the character might I suggest this. I’m playing a lvl 13 Minotaur Paladin. He is all about hogging the spotlight for personal glory, but not for the reasons you might think. You see, he believes that the more legendary he becomes the more he can inspire the masses to push their limits to be the best they can be in their chosen field. It’s through this inspiration that he believes he brings glory to his god and serves his god. So yes he can be a bit reckless and an egomaniac, but it’s central to how he plays in game. Would love to hear how you RP yours

glory paladins are so underrated. i feel like their subclass features offers the best mix of teamwork, support, and active combat efficacy 1. their oath is probably the most flexible/non-contentious oath when it comes to general teamwork and decision making. the oath is basically striving to make good stories, and ensuring that you and your party are better today than they were yesterday 2. unlike almost every other channel divinity, a glory paladin can actually make use of their 3rd level class feature not just every day, but every combat they have channel divinity available -and the effects last all day. namely in inspiring smite, which doesn't burn your action, so there's no real setup or cost to action economy unless you're a PAM build. temp hp will always be useful in every adventuring day, *and again it lasts for the full day*. so you could actually give yourself like 12-30 temp hp, short rest, then give 12-30 more temp hp to another party member, repeat 3. extra movement in actual practice comes in handy quite often. so many situations where 30ft is *just* out of range of an enemy or some other important objective. not to mention that it often gives players easier opportunities to flank, which is a rule that every table i've ever played at in the last half decade has used. you basically get infinite access to what's essentially the vengeance paladin's main crowning feature for no real resource cost, *and* give it to the party member you're flanking with. all it takes is literally the most basic amount of teamwork. not to mention niche non-combat situations where extra movement is useful in general 4. haste. do i really need to say more? beyond the reminder that if you pick up res con you'll likely have +10 to con saving throws by level 9, meaning you outright can't fail a concentration check until you take at least 24 damage in one hit, or 44 damage before the odds will be against you. even if you don't take res con and have a +7 to con saving throws, you'd still need to take at least 38 damage before the odds are against you succeeding 5. if you get to high levels, the level 15 ability is probably one of the best level 15 paladin subclass features

If your smite does 2d8 for a 1st Level spell slot and you get an additional 1d8 for every spell slot higher than 1st, shouldn't it cap at 6d8 since a 5th Level spell slot would represent an 4 extra 1d8? Am I missing something here? Why does a 5th Level Divine Smite do the same damage as a 4th Level Divine Smite?
