Funny how different peoples tastes can be. Terre d’Hermes was my very first fragrance love as a complete beginner, and I’m a younger-ish guy. I though for sure you would mention the flanker though, TdH Eau Intense Vetiver has been my daily scent for the last few months, it’s just so perfectly mature-manly-foresty smelling, I’m in love with it!

An excellent retrospective on vetivers! Vetiver is an acquired taste, yet some of the last truly classy scents still standing. - Guerlain - 100% - the starter vetiver. There is one more starter to add to the list: Just Jack - more so in a role of a cologne / aftershave / at home or a scent-limited office type deal - a nice vetiver body scent. Very light but a good introduction to the scent class. - Hemingway - really like your ocean analogy. Ironically, I always think E.A. Poe for some reason (visiting Nova Scotia coast?). - Hermes - 100%. For me at least, one staple is missing: the old Eau Sauvage Extreme. On dry down, it becomes a dark and deep but not flat vetiver - at least on me. Thank you very much for your video. I have enjoyed it and also learned of a few I never knew about and would have to try next chance I get. Btw, you may want to consider a career in the radio / broadcasting.

I haven’t liked too many vetiver-heavy scents so far. I think Grey Vetiver was the first I tried. Then Terre D’Hermes and many of its flankers (I’m glad you put that in the enthusiast category because I didn’t think it was easy to like. I recently tried the Guerlain and it mostly just smelled clean to me. It was certainly easier to wear than the others. Would you consider Dior Eau Sauvage a Vetiver-forward scent? I wasn’t a fan of the original when I tried it either, but when I tried the Parfum version I loved it! Maybe that’s because the Vetiver is hidden in other things, but Dior Eau Sauvage Parfum has become my favorite woody scent.

Love this style of video, would definitely be cool to see you explore some more individual notes. 🙌🏻 For me, Vetiver took quite a while to grow on me. When I first smelled Encre Noire I literally thought it was the most disgusting fragrance I had ever smelled wondered why on Earth anyone would create anything that smells like it. Now, a couple of years later, I own a full bottle, absolutely adore the stuff and am blown away every time I sniff it, and I will praise it as a high quality niche-level masterpiece-among-masterpieces to anyone who will listen. The stuff is the Mona Lisa of Vetiver. 😂 A few to add to the list for anyone else exploring the note: Zara Vetiver Pampelmousse - in my opinion, THE most accessible Vetiver fragrance on the market. It’s primarily bitter, photorealistic Grapefruit that smells WAY better quality than its price point, and then as it settles down the Vetiver comes in very gently in the background and the combination is just perfect. For the price, it’s a no brainer honestly. Best Grapefruit scent I’ve ever smelled, and trust me I’ve smelled plenty by this point. Performance sucks, but who cares considering the price and quality. A perfect entrance for someone who doesn’t like Vetiver to dip their feet into. Frederic Malle Vetiver Extraordinaire - probably the most “perfect” earthy/woody traditional Vetiver scent I’ve come across. It apparently had the highest amount of Vetiver ever put into a fragrance when it was released(I don’t know if anything else has come out to take that crown since). It’s so perfect that to some people it’s almost boring. It has no rough edges, nothing challenging about it, it’s just a very high quality and very well blended scent. Definitely accessible due to the lack of any “funk” or quirk. Yes the price is very high and to many people, for what you get, it’s too high. Still, on scent profile and quality alone, it’s got to be one of the most well crafted out there, as well as one of the classiest and easiest to wear. Roja Vetiver - I’ll make it quick because I know that you like this one Justin and a lot of people know it. To me this is Tom Ford Grey Vetiver but better in every way. Fresher, more complex, more vibrant. Still the best “clean” Vetiver scent that I’ve yet tried. Frederic Malle French Lover/Bois D’Orage - A true masterpiece from Pierre Bourdon (I believe the scent was originally started by Jean-Claude Ellena and then taken over and finished by Pierre when JCE was employed by Hermes half way through its creation). Takes that earthiness of Vetiver to the next level with a bunch of spicy greenness which opens up like the smell of wet vegetation, but somehow manages to dry down to something incredibly classy and alluring. It’s so hard to describe what this smells like, but for anyone who loves Vetiver and wants something that doesn’t just smell like the traditional Vetiver scents that we all know and love, you OWE it to yourself to get your nose on this stuff. Just a few for the Vetiver heads (or Grapefruit heads with the Zara one) to get their nose on. VETIVER LOVERS UNITE. 😆🙌🏻

I love this concept Justin. Take a note and explain it, give some examples and people can decide for themself if they want to explore it. I personaly love the scent of vetiver, as long as it's combined with the right ingredients and when it stays on the more fresher or light woody site of this note. A citrus-lavender-vetiver combo is, in my opinion, one of the best. But everybody will have it's own favorite, as it should be.

Another great and unique video Justin. Vetiver is definitely an underappreciated note. I, like you, love the note. I have to admit you're better than me when it comes to Hemingway. That is a tough one for me to pull off--so earthy and so green. It's funny because I love to smell it but it's a tough one to wear. I know you can't feature every vetiver fragrance, but one that I really love is ROJA's Vetiver! Great grassy clean vetiver that develops on the skin over time to a darker, almost smoky scent that is elegant beyond words--love it. Also, wanted to congratulate you on 2nd Soul--my bottle arrived last week and I've been wearing it out and really loving it--you really knocked it out to the park--keep doing what you doing and have a blessed day brother!

I love vetiver, not my number one accord but love it. Guerlain's Vetiver though I never gave it a full wear, probably because it is a bit too soft and mainstream. I wore both Encre Noir and I prefer the Extreme for sure, its woody, dry and sweet at the same time, love it. Probably the best example for a niche quality perfume for around $30!! Terre d' Hermes literally grabbed from the street and into the Hermes outlet in Vancouver back in 2006 when it was first released. It is my absolute favorite vetiver scent. A bit polarizing, but definitely niche quality and a timeless classic. Not familiar with Lo Loden, Hemingway or incident diplomatique. Absolutely worth trying from your description.

Roja Parfums Vetiver is the only fragrance I own with Vetiver in the name or as the main note. Even if you’re not a huge vetiver lover it is just absolutely divine and the only one I need. I reserve it for more formal occasions as it has a very mature feel, almost too mature for me like most Vetivers. My wife feels the same way, likes it a lot, but bordering on too mature. She was surprised when I first wore it (first date as husband and wife at an upscale Italian restaurant for dinner.). But it is so good. It can be replaced with Guerlain Vetiver at a much better price. As far as my fragrance I wear the most that has prominent vetitiver I would say Masculine Pluriel by MFK. TDH very nice too I like the pure parfum.

Great list / Idea…. I would say… A “beginner” vetiver would be a fragrance were the vetiver is noticeable, but perhaps not the only accord / main accord you could focus on.. Something along the lines of Karl Lagerfeld Bois de Vetiver or Mercedes Benz Silver.. Very fresh and clean “vetiver” fragrances that are even easier to wear (for most) then Grey Vetiver / Guerlain Vetiver.. If you like those… Then jump to TF GV, etc… Just my 2-cents / how I think of it.

Cool thing to place the bottles you just talked about into the background, I noticed at least that subtle thing. Not at all a fan of vetiver myself; I do have scents with vetiver, but rarely as the prominent note. If you want a crash course in the polar extremes of vetiver, check out two fragrances from Bruno Fazolari / FZotic. On the dark side, he has Lampblack which lets you experience the soil covered roots of vetiver, the black ink spilled acorss your desk, the old biker jacket in the back of the closet and the screeching of a needle scratching across a black vinyl record. Not for noobs. On the opposite end, on the light side, he has Vetiverissimo which gives you the dewy lawn, brushing against the shrubs in the garden, grass-stained jeans, and an herbal soapiness, all with a milky creaminess running through the length of the fragrance. A masterful showcase of the light side of vetiver. Probably in my top 5 of all time. The first I ever considered a real masterpiece.

Wow! What a coincidence Justin. I've just spotted Guerlain Vetiver in your thumbnail and guess what I received in the mail today....? The very same! It's actually my first scent of 2023 and the only one missing from my classic Guerlain collection. Also, Terre d'Hermes is a very special fragrance for me. It was one of my first more upmarket designer purchases. I recall smelling it for the first time and being completely mesmerised. So an instant love. Amouroud Lunar Vetiver is worth exploring (a wonderful creation a bit similar to TF Grey Vetiver but with an earthy undercurrent) as is Nishane Sultan Vetiver although it's definitely more challenging as it contains 3 or 4 types of vetiver, giving it a complex cocktail of notes that are clean, smokey and earthy - definitely not for everyone.

@@sethgyan Terre d'Hermes was one of the first fragrances I ever owned so for me its rather special. Guerlain Vetiver is very different affair as it doesn't have the dirty orange note of Hermes. Instead it's more grassy. I only sprayed it about 5 hours ago but its still projecting strongly and it gets more classy as it dries down ie less earthy and increasingly clean. Unfortunately straight up vetiver can be very polorising, you either like it or hate it. It's also more suited to a mature audience. If you are after something more youthful I would suggest you get your nose on Aaron Terence Hughes Guapo.

That thing in the background of Terre d'Hermes might be the high dose of ISO E Super which I think is well known to be in there. As for vetiver, some of the "greener" ways in which it's implemented can sometimes feel a bit "stuffy" to me, like wearing a sweater next to a closed window with the sun shining in.

I thought you would have Tom Ford grey vetiver as an honorable mention

Sammarco-Vitrum is my favorite vetiver, the dirtiest, smokiest vetiver I have ever smelled. Imagine the smell of vetiver just pulled from the soil, roots included

Agree with this list among the ones I have. Encre Noir and Terre. I'll check out some of the others. Some others to try out would be Joseph Abboud Black Linen ... similar to Terre ... but with a more mineral note ... Bentley Wild Vetiver ... very dry and open, almost spicy, and Givenchy's Vetyver, which is a dry vetiver classic similar to Guerlain but easier to wear IMO.

I have Encre noir and Guerlain vetiver and love them. For some reason I'm not sure why I love these since though they're kind of funky

I must be one of the two-three people that didn’t like Encre Noire A L’Extreme at all. I gave it away. Didn’t really capture me. I enjoy the original EDT and even Sport over it.

I blind bought guerlain vetiver in 2014. I hated it (it gave me the exact nausea and vomiting feeling that motion sickness does). Fast forward to this year, I get it out from the drawer it was gathering dust in and ... I really enjoy it. To the point that I bought encre noire (the classic), too, last week. That being said, I don't know all the scents in this vid, but, the 3 I know, I'd put like this: 1. Beginner: TDH. Seems the more approachable to me. 2. Intermediate: Guerlain vetiver. Vetiver is the star of the show, but it's in a big band, so to say. 3. enthusiast: encre noire. Starts vetiver and dies vetiver. It's a solo concert. IMO ...

I tend to agree with you. I only have TdH and GV for now. I guess that puts me in Level 2.

I don't have a problem with VETIVER. But my reaction to Terre D'Hermes OG was exactly similar yours at first. Vetiver: always classy, mysterious/intriguing and unique, especially to the amateur nose. Justin I've always loved to have Jovoy Incident Diplomatique... In fact I just love the name. May be one day, before I die, I will have the privilege to put my amateur nose on it.... Hopefully. Thanks for the video, Justin. Regards to Madam Fresh. 👍
