I love that you're incorporating backwards jumps into your gameplay more in these clips. It's a pretty good tech with some weapons - I'm a big fan of it on whips. I've found it easier to perform them out of other actions like rolls/attacks since it uses the same cancel as crouch cancel and handytech (with the downside of a 6-frame jumpsquat). Helps keep or regain priority vs many light attack chains, as well as most running/rolling/crouching attacks in the game. The reduced hitbox, super armor, and instant movement makes it a viable alternative to the other strafing options you mentioned in your strafe video a while back. edit: Also backwards jump is still a lame name. I'm starting a petition to rename it the Noodle jump.

No wonder katanas are busted. Jump attacks in general have phantom range, can’t be parried, more poise damage, can set up true combos and now we learn have forward super armour. There’s little weakness in jump attack spam and you even get armour and talismans that boost it and it’s hard to punish or trade with it.

Halberd offdagger is generally the “learning” setup that people recommend. Good range and damage, teaches you to roll catch, mixup, and freeaim attacks to avoid wiffing

Instead of just relying on your gut, you have knowledge to make educated decisions in a fight. You dont “need” to know frame data, but i find it helps

With the coming dlc I want share my thoughts. After logging a lot of time on 1.10 I can say with no reservation that I do not like how the game plays by comparison to 1.09. I think the change to poise was a fundamental alteration that was completely unwarranted. I never saw any discussion on passive poise being game breaking or overpowered. Poise was not a broken mechanic because there was an enormous list of low requirement weapons that broke all poise or almost all and common ashes of war that broke it as well with most light weapon classes. Most light weapon classes were fast enough in their recovery time that they could not be caught on reaction by other weapons this is almost universally true when they had quickstep or bloodhound step as their ash. Light weapons were absolutely useable in 1.09. They could have used a bit of normalization on their poise damage. Many were around 57 poise damage if they would have bumped that to 67 1h for all but daggers it would have made them break any poise on second hit which would have been much better than now. It takes 30 seconds for poise to regenerate which is an eternity. The change to poise made the game way more passive unless someone is using an obviously broken setup. People tend to just run away and stay just out of range spinning and wiggling until you dare to attack out of sheer boredom or mistake one of their million per second spins and wiggles for an attack and attempt a trade. There is not enough of a gradient of damage between the light weapons and great weapons or colossal weapons to justify light weapons haveing a speed advantage and stun to boot. If from thought 1h light weapons were underused there were better ways of buffing them that didn’t require turning elden ring into ds3.5. They also must have thought that 1h great weapons were too strong since the poise alterations were a nerf to 1h great weapons. I rarely see anyone one handing power stancing great weapons other than the great spears. 1.10 also killed armor diversity. If you have less than 88 poise a 2h light weapon will spam you to death. Or if other guy has offstock you better have brought 109 poise. Light weapons should do 67 so they always stun in two hits but you can wear down to the 51 poise armors with bull goat talisman to tank the first hit. The changes also massively buffed ashes of war. Since many light weapons have fast backswings and get the faster versions of ashes of war they get a massive effectiveness boost from having priority. Heavy weapons have more reactable attacks and slower ashes of war so having priority does not benefit them nearly as much as it does light weapons where you have to try to differentiate between a fast backswing or a fast roll catch ash of war. This was obviously not accounted for in balance. The ash of war damage is now insane with multi hit ashes now fully comboing. Damage in this game was too high and 1.10 poise changes turned that up to 11 with L2 to win 1000 damage ashes of war all over the place now. Paired weapons are overtuned in 1.10. Adding stun to psss and pss is insane. Already some of the best in the game and they get a buff. The elemental barrier nerfs were ridiculously excessive to the point that I have not seen a single person use one since their nerf. They are non existent in pvp. Mages now can just pop terra magica and stand toe to toe in melee inside the circle or launch buffed spells if you don’t enter the circle to go get them. They are a no weakness build any more. Best at range and just as good up close. Spells like catch flame do 189 poise damage every cast and can be spammed. The blockstun on light weapons feels ridiculous. If you spam into my shield with a light weapon I should be able to parry your spam but block stun can make that impossible with lag and what seems to be input drops. I have been anchored in place unable to do anything trying to attack or roll away from someone just spamming paired daggers or fist weapons right into my shield. It feels so clunky and frustrating. I see gameplay from good players in 1.10 and its all just stay out of range wiggle and spin until they do something I can punish. It is boring to watch and boring to play against. 1.10 made the game more passive, made spam more effective for melee and magic, and increased ash of war damage. 1.10 in my opinion was a terrible patch.

Imo, the “passive” meta is something you really only see in non-competitive settings, given the size of the arena. Tournaments are held on smaller scale maps where you can apply corner pressure to force aggression. But passive, or rather, patient play will always be what you see in the higher brackets, just due to the nature that people are smart enough to avoid forcing trades, they’d rather get clean hits rather than risk several 50/50s. Its just smart. So how do you do that, you let the other guy fuck up, and you punish them for it. Thats regardless of which patch cycle we’re on, and applies to much more than just souls pvp. The major flaw with 1.10 is how they adjusted hyperarmor, backswing poise damage, and some specific poise breakpoints. Hyperarmor being able to infinite trade into eachother, having startup frames as early as 7 frames into an animation, and boosting the hyperarmor of certain ashes of war are all examples of where this went wrong. But then to lower the poise damage on backswings from medium weapons like halberds and greatswords removed their ability to stay competative in their 1 handed moveset, having less poise damage than even an offhand thrusting sword, which is another thing in of itself. Many changes needed to be made, they had a fairly good idea but implemented it poorly.

@Rust_BKT I don't play tourneys but I see people who do play tourneys play passive quite often (in non tourneys gameplay) Your own gameplay often times is quite passive. It's a mechanics problem because it wasn't like this nearly as much before they nerfed passive poise and buffed Stam damage vs block. Both of those changes had a noticeable negative effect on how much time people spend inside of eachothers range. What is the problem with infinite hyperarmor trades and frame 7 hyper armor? The hyperarmor values and frames on some ashes of war are a real problem you are absolutely correct about that. Also poise damage decay on medium weapons was probably a bad choice as well. The problem is there is not a great way to agress without passive poise. What ends up happening is people just space everything and punish wiffs or they throw out a reverse jump r1 that because of the speed and range of that attack will force a roll. Then it's back to kiting, spinning, wiggling and wave dashing until they do something punishable again. But if I have passive poise vs fast weapons I can enter the opponents range and still have gameplay options. Spacing is a good skill to have and regardless of weather you have passive poise or not it will pay off if you can do it. But when it's a mandatory part of the meta it forces a certain playstyle instead of only encouraging it. And that's the problem. It's pretty obvious from the execution of this patch that they didn't think about it that hard.

Id play to force a player to use the tools that dont give them that advantage, otherwise im just playing a game of chicken, which, imo, sucks. Thats why we dont sit point blank against psgs or ts, we space from a distance that makes them use more reactable actions.

What attacks from neutral are unreactable? Pretty much all melee except maybe daggers and some fist weapons are easily reactable on first swing. In 1.09 there were few weapons that had a near 50/50 neutral and used to stun. I supported nerfing those kinds of attacks like they did gugs poke. Neutral 50/50s that deal damage and give priority is not fun to play against. Passive poise doesn't do that so I'm not sure what you're comment is addressing. In 1.09 you could still space and counter like now with light weapons and could not be reaction traded with. The difference was you would have to hit them more than once or hit them with a stronger attack to get priority. Mechanically 1.10 has some fun elements. You're strafing video shows some excellent gameplay mechanics. There were better ways to make things like this a more reliable and frequently applicable machanic than just blanket making everything break neutral poise all the time. I understand wanting to avoid trades as a playstyle choice but not as a mandatory playstyle like it is now. The examples you use of psgs and ts are interesting. Psgs has one problem attack. If crouch l1 was not as fast the paired weapons would probably not be as popular as just the 2h version or just offhand for odd hyperarmor properties. Imo that attack needed a speed nerf like gugs. And ts wound not be oppressive if it didn't stun on hit 1. I don't care if I take a little damage in the game as long as it's fun to play. It seems to me like actual roll attacks and 1h great weapons just went away in 1.10. The whole point is we had passive poise in 1.09 and it didn't make any weapons useless or any weapons overpowered. They could have made smaller mechanic changes than the virtual elimination of passive poise and seen improvements in gameplay. It was a drastic change that was not necessary to improve how the game played.

@@Rust_BKT I feel like the backswing poise changes were fantastic, personally, to make repeated R1 chains more risky with lighter weapons. For heavier weapons, though, I wouldn't mind those changes not applying. Slower, heavier weapons reply more on follow-up swings for baits, so them having less poise damage is weird. That being said, however, I do find the changes from 1.09 to be overall positive. So many multihit abilities are finally viable after being practically unusable pre-1.10, and hyper armor actually feels impactful against more than just the lightest weapons. Some HA values need to be adjusted (looking at UGS having the highest poise damage of virtually anything rn), but overall this is a step in the right direction.

Sorry I pissed you off, I love your content and it's very very high on my favorites list. I think dueling so much has just got me bitter about those typical powerhouse meta, straight forward but annoying at times, type of builds. And I'd very much like to see a tournament or community grow basing their styles as if the character is you, (non-hard swapping) what you equiped, you can use... And have Endurance point investments be the cost of having weapons for different scenarios while reflecting negatively on grossly over powered meta builds. Fights would last longer, be more fun, rewarding and hopefully improve the community as a whole, against the poison roped pot dropping, tea baggers, that may have barely won the fight, but pointlessly disrespected and sucked out all the fun you may have just had. Never will happen, but I wish we could all just have respectful but intense, mindful fights beyond "how big my numbers go?". 🤷🏻♂️

Just for clarity, the reason for such bans is due to something called “centralization”, where by having some things legal, it forces the meta to shift in a way that inhibits the presence of variety. I.e. by allowing spinning slash twinblade, everyone is forced to run 123 poise or else you get blendered by a hardswap, or by having holy liver legal, any faith build is effectively made dead with 1 consumable that grants 35% negation. That kinda thing. Im glad to see youre not so closed minded though, and again, sorry for reacting aggressively

Hopefully the general in game PVP community gets less blatantly disrespectful. The only way I can deal with it and still have fun is making my build have something able to handle 97% of everything in the game. I'll be posting a video showcase of sorts on it in a day or two. Learned a lot by really dissecting game mechanics, aspects, techniques of the build in clips of me winning and losing. If interested I'll send the link here when it is done.
