hey everyone, i noticed a lot of people are a little confused and maybe upset with my comment asking what Nimona's original form is and i really appreciate the answer to that. I realize it was dumb of me and that Nimona explains many times that they're Nimona. Not one specific being. However, Just to be clear i was asking about Nimonas original form (whether nimona was born human or not, not their gender.) But i appreciate the feedback on that question :)

Nimona by herself in my opinion is a really unique protagonist. Her personality is kinda cliche being the "hardened but still has a soft side" kinda deal, but they put that to its fullest extreme with her + her chaotic nature. When it comes to Nimona's "original" form, whatever it may be, I think the point is that we don't need to know it. Nimona has a lot of LGBTQ+ themes, and Nimona is where the T comes in. The important thing we need to accept about Nimona is that her identity is who she wants it to be, when she wants to be it. What her "original" form looks like doesn't matter, because the whole point of her character is that her form doesn't define her. You can especially see it in the earlier scenes where Ballistor (may have spelt that wrong) asks her to just be herself, in which he means the human girl, but Nimona gets confused/offended because she's just her, no matter what she looks like.
@marcusclark1339
Жыл бұрын
its not, empathizing with themes doesn't root it just by that alone, like a shapeshifter isn't intrinsic to identity talks like how a jrpg story is finding yourself or molding self into who u need to be doesn't mean it isn't, that's just a theme anyone can understand not just a specific group

Pretty sure the hard left turn from fun action the pain ostricization causes + overthrowing the government is set up from the beginning. I mean, Bal is the top of his class and still it takes until the day of his knighting for people to accept him. Nimona starts dropping lines about being an outcast and tipping us off that she's insecure/in pain from near minute one So yea, definitely intentionally written that way.

I think the interiors of the palace were intentionally bland and boring. To represent how they don't like anything different, they gave it a monolithic feel. Asking what Nimona's original form was, is kind of missing the point. As she said herself, she is Nimona, nothing more and nothing less and the thing that defines her is her shapeshifting. Especially as an allegory for trans and genderfluid identity this is important, with people insisting, often even without malicious intent, to just stay within the bounds of your assigned gender at birth, much the same way that Ballister suggests that Nimona should stay in her usual girl form, as it is the one he perceives as her "original" form.
@magalifernandez323

right? it's even explicitly addressed in-movie, during the train scene when Ballister asks Nimona what she is and she shuts him down for asking narrow-minded questions lol She is all of it, the shapeshifting, the animals and the humans, and she always has been. Asking "ok but what was she /originally/?" feels a lot like people asking queer people "ok but what's in your pants?" and it really speaks of unfamiliarity with queer experiences outside the gender binary

I really don't get why people feel the need to figure out what her "original form" was. Throughout the movie Nimona tells Bal or implies to him when he is asking her a simple minded question. Questions that are based around trying to feed into what he was taught in regards to monsters and people who are "evil" or questions that are just plain ignorant. When he asks questions that are based in a genuine want to understand her, as her, she gives genuine answers. If Bal tried asking what her "original form" was, she would surely say something that just tells him it's a stupid question to ask. She's Nimona. Doesn't matter how long she's been Nimona, she's Nimona. Asking about an original form is the same as asking a trans person "when did you decide you were trans? " or "what's your ACTUAL name? " It's implying that they decided to be a certain way. When they've always been such. Nimona was Nimona 1000 years ago. Who's to say she hasn't been such since she was born?

The shadow monster, as best as I can tell is queer grief and anger personified. Literally all of the suffering society had put her through for 1000 years just unleashed. One thing I really love is how the movie never pretends like Nimona is wrong to be angry or depressed. Like, it's not her fault just the result of how everyone's treating her. Then, she transforms into a phoenix a symbol of rebirth, wisdom and power to go tear down the corrupt system. Simplifying complex situations for the runtime, maybe? The point is the ideas get across which is what really makes it connect imo

The issues you had with the lighting are mainly just a result of how they did the cel shading. Cel shading can be difficult to pull off, and tends to look off-putting and out of place if done poorly. Some of the indoor lighting seems to suffer as a result of this, but the fun character designs and animations make up for it. Don’t quote me, I’m not an animator and don’t know much about the technical side of cel shading. This is just what I think happened.

I think Nimona was originally a forest spirit or energy and was just adapting to her surroundings. In her backstory, much of the land was unsettled, so she took more animal forms to fit her surroundings. But in the present of the film, there are more humans, which is why she took on a human form. Essentially, I think it is symbolic of her trying to find her place in the world; eventually finding that she doesn't need to settle on one appearance because every form she takes is an extension of herself and a part of who she is.

10:26 I theorized in another reactor’s video on this movie that Nimona when she took her “final” form in the climax as a “phoenix” stopping the director’s gun, she’s in essence a being of light / as in able to change her look & manipulate light into mass to feel “real”. She might’ve started out taking shapes of animals to find a place of belonging, but it might’ve been when she met Gloreth in the past she finally took a form of a human, one that looks like a child to appear disarming. Fast forward to Nimona having trauma ✨, Nimona didn’t want to leave the kingdom but she has to stay disguised but she can’t go back to her first human form she made cuz again, trauma ✨. So she made another form that she has creative liberties with; a punk teenager that lets her express her anger onto the kingdom without killing anybody & it’s one she made that wasn’t deemed as “acceptable” to humans without startlingly them with her sudden shape-shifting.

She could've been a human girl who got shapeshifting abilities from a well, but the scene in the train was an allegory for her meeting Gloreth and throwing the rock into a smaller well instead of a gold coin into the actual well, because her wish was to get a friend. She could've been a dragon who was the only one left of it's kind. We don't know and that makes it better.

What I like about the implications of Nimona's shape-shifting is that she has no original form. Why should a shape shifter have an original form? That kinda beats the purpose of the trans/genderfluid metaphor. My personal theory is that Nimona is a type of creature who has sort of always been around. A shapeless mist that could replicate other lifeforms. The little girl form, her teen form, her rhinoceros form... they're all her. Because she's not a girl, or a Shark, or a Gorilla. She's Nimona.

My only real issue with Nimona is that the third act feel so horribly rushed, and the third act break up felt so horribly out of character for Bal that it destroyed any semblance of care I had for the story. The first two acts are amazing, I love the chemistry Nimona and Bal have and Nimona is an amazing character, plus the story set up is perfect. But the phrase "an ending can kill a movie" is so ungodly true here. Everything feels like it happens at once and wraps up far too quickly for any emotional payoff. Had this movie been say 30-40 minutes longer (which it very easily could have been) to help with the climax being, actually climactic and gave more time to the emotional weight of the ending of the movie, as well as getting rid of that stupid third act break-up, It would have been perfect

My reaction is the exact opposite. While the ending did feel rushed, I remember the 3rd act more because it was more mature and heartfelt than the rest of the movie. Esp when Nimona tries to unalive herself with a spear

Personally I thought it was just alright, I like it! The characters were really fun and expressive, and I loved how the main two bounced off each other really well! But I don't know me and my brother got kinda lost by the third act and were just waiting for the movie to end 😭

Does your life not normally feel like it's bouncing around and chaotic to that speed? /jk I definitely vibe with the pace though it just feels like rambling about story ideas with my ND friends and that vibe is wonderful and something we don't see a lot.

2:38 I actually just came off watching Marvel Rising earlier this week which has a similar plot line where Spider Gwen/Ghost Spider gets wrongfully accused of her friend’s death & now must catch the real killer to prove her innocence. I wasn’t expecting this same plot to pop up in the other animated project I was planning on watching. Thanks for the review on this though because I was debating watching it.

I haven’t seen anyone talking about this and I need to tell people this but if you need a reason to rewatch Nimona pay attention the the shape of the reflection in each characters eyes it tells a lot about each characters current ideals and status examples are the director and the knights at times have a rhombus which is also the symbol of the institute and it’s also everywhere Nimona has a shape that’s the same shape as her eyes in her “monster” form and the only other person who had that reflection symbol was little gloreth but it changes to the rhombus when she says “go back to the shadows from whence you came” and when phoenix Nimona flies across the kingdom her light reflects in the peoples eyes and replaces their previous shape another detail is that those same symbols appear in light reflections on the screen depending on the part of the movie I could go on for hours about all the details I’ve found in this movie I’ve rewatched it 4 times no I am not ok

I actually didn't want to punch Gloreth through the screen, I wanted to punch the adults. Gloreth actually took a second to think about it and watched Nimona panic when it looked like Nimona was raging. Also, the eyes. Gloreth was such a little kid and they can be influenced or black-mailed so easily. Freakin' adults.

I don’t think Nimona is physical at all. I think she is a spirit. I think she was formless consciousness that became something when it saw something it liked. I think Nimona became a little girl because that was the first person she saw and that she mimicked the look of a little girl to fit that. I think if she had seen a little boy she would have been a little boy. I think she is a mimic as ancient as life itself.

While I see what you mean about the indoor settings being boring, I think that was on purpose. The Institute is the most Institutional Institution to Ever Institute because it represents systems of power in general. To me, the settings felt very corporate, which makes sense with the theme of the movie: the Institute SAYS it exists to protect the people, but it ACTUALLY exists to keep society within a strict hierarchy, with itself at the top, and it uses fear to enforce that hierarchy. I think that parallels our economic and political systems irl, which are often bland, overly structured, and place little import on aesthetics. There are issues with the lighting, tho--I think it was a corner cut in an attempt to get the movie made. I wish they'd had as much time to devote to craft as Spider-verse, but ce la vie, maybe in a sequel.

The only thing I would change about the movie is the animation. I feel like lowering the frame rate for some fight scenes would’ve made things better, like Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

When it comes to the animation in this movie, it reminds me most of Dreamworks "Bad Guys" more than anything else. Specifically the character designs, their expressions, and movements. Not to mention the fast paced, quippy style of the action scenes and non-action scenes that really makes the characters pop and perfectly reflects Nimonas personality! I will admit there were a couple short frames that looked a little- jarring? I don't really know how to describe it, there were just a couple short frames that looked kind of off to me. But those moments were few and far between. I didn't really mind the fast pacing of the story because it stayed engaging throughout without feeling like it was going by too fast, and like I said, it compliments Nimonas personality and the action well. Though everything after Nimona turning into a (ironically because this film is all about confronting prejudice and demonization towards people groups) monster of darkness felt oddly rushed to me. Like the finale came and then it was just- gone. And like I said, I didn't mind the fast pace prior to the finale, but the last 10ish minutes went by way too quickly in my opinion. But that's really my only major issue with the film. Overall, 8.5 out of 10. Really charming and exciting film with a couple minor flaws, but would fully recommend it to anyone!
