When women begin their post-cancer storytelling journey, we remind them that cancer is not their only story. As You Night founder Lisa McKenzie says, “Although cancer has happened to you, it's not who you are.”
At the You Night Story Crafting Program, women are guided on how to reflect on their life, craft their story and share it with the world so it can uplift someone who needs encouragement.
In this video, we learn about Brandy Gwin. Here is an excerpt of her story:
“When I was 10 years old, my parents came to us to let us know they would be getting a divorce. I remember trying to stay strong for my little brother. He didn’t understand why mommy and daddy wouldn’t be living in the same house anymore. I really didn’t either, it was kind of a shock. I was very close to both of my parents. My mom was my nurturer and my cuddler. My dad was my hobby partner. We played softball, soccer, golf and ran in 5k runs together. At that time, I didn’t realize I would soon have to choose which parent I wanted to live with.”
Story Crafting is a therapeutic self-help tool, but is not intended to replace traditional therapy. Should you find that the subject matter is too difficult to process, please reach out to a licensed professional.
