Amazing how far prices have fallen. $90 ~3 years ago and today I picked up a similar team group drive for $22. It was less than $40 for both the drive and adapter. Just love it. Those of us that run home labs have to good these days.

Wait, so why did you not just flash the H710m to IT mode ?
@seanm9378

Hello, nice vids! For the H710p, flash it to IT mode so you passthrough all disks individually to freenas. Boot ESXi, passthrough the newly flashed H710P mini It mode, reboot, go to freenas VM and Edit options, add PCI device and select the H710P and start up freenas. Voila! You now have your sas or sata drives completely available for freenas. I use all my servers with Samsung 970 Evo’s with pci e adapter and install all VM’s, ISO’s and Backup and ESXI swap.

By rerouting to SATA port(s), server loses the option to access SAS drives. Connection via the RAID controller (especially with the H710 mini D1) is also known to have faster transfer rates compared when connecting via SATA ports. Cross flashing the H710 mini to IT mode keeps access to SAS drives at the same time allows HBA passthrough for the drive bays.

@@daltonw5624 lucky the KZitem app pings me 🤣. Nvme protocol uses pcie so it should be automatically picked up. If your os can't see it. I would first look at your adapter you are using and if your m.2 ssd is actually nvme or uses sata.

@@theophilusbassaw580 It's definitely NVME. Ver 1.2 to be precise. It's picked up by the Dell Server, but not by the overlaying hypervisor. It almost looks like the server has it allocated as a hot spare. It's kind of annoying actually, I'll see if I can find the issue this evening. And the adaptor is PCIe x8.

Thanks!! I just bought a Dell R420 to use as my home server. First Xeon system for me, and then its even dual CPU! :). Oh, and 96Gb ECC DDR3 RAM. It shipped with 4x SAS 6Gbs 148Gb hdd's, set in RAID 5. They are crazy fast, but I was thinking I may need more storage than the 450Gb down the line. And now I know how! Thanks :D

Awesome! Welcome to the home server club! I bought a Dell R710 last April. Its a beast! I picked up a R210 a few months ago to use as pfsense router. I currently don't have anything running on the R710, but my plan is to turn it into an unRAID server once I pick up a Dell PowerVault 1200 to hold some more hard drives.

So with the backplane still in (IT mode flashing the card should permit it to pass through, right?) you could use that sata port for a second drive and use a 2x nvme adapter. Obviously only sata speeds on the second drive but faster than spinning rust.

Or at least a SSD of some sort. Most of my rigs run off standard SATA drives and have a boot time after post of ~15 seconds. A NVME MIGHT shave some off that, but it's already 15 seconds. Good enough for me.

Any idea of what could be happening? :S The differences that I have on mine in comparisson to yours, is that I have a GPU installed on the middle pcie slot, a raid controller and 4 sata disks on the front + an SSD where the CDROM was.

I have a R710 and I've found the SAS drives to be quite slow and slugish. I get around 128MB R and 126MB W. Could I leave out the drives and just add this into the machine and use it, would the H700 RAID card see it as a drive or just as additional storage?
@gcdsuite8471

I have an R720 and it does not recognize PCIE NVMe as a boot drive. But you can configure it as a volume for VM. What others have tried is they installed the root partition to the NVMe drive then plug in a USB drive with the boot partition in it. R710 has an internal USB port that can fit in a pen drive for this particular purpose.
