Super easy trap to fall into - I'm extremely guilty of this too. It's important to give ourselves grace, but also don't let the resistance beat you for too long! what do you like to create?

@@chrisjordan1178 Yea finding that balance is challenging but worth working towards! I love to create anything but my main focus is colored pencil and painting.

This is all well and good. But, I think it's also important-in this atmosphere of commodified content-to say that not all creative acts result in a marketable product.

I completely agree with you! I don't think everything needs to become a marketable product either. A lot can be just for you and not for the world - that's a great distinction. I appreciate you watching!

My struggle is that I won't bother starting, because the things I create would be too easy for me and not challenging. And yet, I dislike challenges, and love familiar cozy things. But without challenges, things are way less exciting and adventurous. I guess I should try to start loving simple and easy stuff, or else I won't do anything at all.

I fit my writing around work & kids/household, so every paragraph is a first paragraph (or feels like it). I just need to keep going. I'm 110k words into a 130-140k book. I'd like it *not* to turn 10 as a WIP, but that anniversary is rushing up (October). I just need work & homelife to tick along with no bumpy bits. *And* keep my confidence. Simple, huh?

I have been thinking of recording myself singing for a couple of years now, but just never seem to be able to overcome the initial friction. I have all the gear I need which make it even more frustrating. I am going to set up a project and set up my microphone so that its ready to just press record at any time. Thank you for the nudge, hopefully I will start a new habit because of your choice to upload this video!

Really thoughtful video. I have recently begun writing as a hobby and I gotta say its the worst hobby with this kind of thing. I find writing exceptionally easy to get into and not overthink, but whenever I bring it up to anyone the first question they ask "are you trying to get published?". Capitalism has really really infested people to the point where the social expectation is that you want to sell your creations. For videos Ive really found that tiktok is a blessing tbh. The tools are so limited and Ive forced myself to really only edit for 5 minutes per video. It feels really good to just go from idea to final product in like 30 minutes.

The way society has made us feel like everything needs to be capitalized on is frustrating.. I would be most interested in just reading your writing - who cares about the outcome! have you published it anywhere for me to check out? all good if not but when you do i'd love to be a fan! And yeah - tiktok and short form is truly a good constraint to set. For some reason I'm most comfortable on camera for long forms so that's what I'm leaning into.. thanks so much for watching!

Creating art is essentially becoming a new person. So we get confronted with all our doubts, limiting beliefs and other excuses. But this is why we create, to confront and evolve ourselves.

It's all about the carrot.. Are we distracted or are we focused. Back in the days it was easier to start. Today everybody wants our attention. We have to take it back and bring it to us. That's not selfish that's accepting being an artist.

To answer the question your video title posed: I'm writing a fantasy novel right now, I'm writing it in English which is sort of a native tounge but still my secondary language, as I have been living in Austria for the last 22 years or so. I take ages to finish a single page, I somehow always end up rewriting every page like a billion times. So far I have written 2 chapters in 3 years. I'm studying for a STEM degree besides writing and I'm running out of cash. I would love to write more often and I believe that I have a chance of becoming successful, but I would just have to spend soo much time working and improving, time that I just don't have. I'm considering quitting uni and looking for a job, as I am running out of funds to pursue my writing "career". Plus I'm already 30 with very little working experience and no degree. So I am sort of at a crossroads and crippled by analysis paralysis rn... That's why I don't have any creative output.

I am so sorry for the crossroads you are at and truly am wishing you the best with what you decide to do! For your novel - what’s it about? Is there a world where you let yourself write for 30 minutes a day and can only keep writing instead of editing what you’ve written? Getting through a full draft would be so amazing!

@@chrisjordan1178 Thank you very much for the kind words. My book is a low fantasy, dark/epic fantasy, mystery, with some sci fi elements sprinkled in. It’s a bit of a thought experiment, on what would have happened if the antiquity had continued into the early middle ages and technology would have progressed instead of regressing like it did in the dark ages. Humans and Neanderthals coexist but Humans have basically enslaved them. Theres also a third race of super intelligent aliens, that actually control most cities and towns as a form of shadow government. Theres obviously a lot more to it but those are basically my cornerstones. And yes I could definitely do that and it’s probably still better than nothing, but I have so little discipline I know I would do overtime on the writing and my studies would just suffer. It’s very difficult for me but eventually I’ll have to make a choice come fall. and yeah I would also have to work on my perfectionism, it’s detrimental to my writing progress. Yeah a draft would be amazing I was hoping to get it done by the end of 2025 but at the current pace It‘ll be mor elike 2060 lol. It really sucks that us creative people have to spend so much time working, to help others achieve their goals, just so we can get by, whilst our own dreams and goals wither away. Sorry I‘m going through a bit of a nihilistic phase right now. 😅

Yes I can do that! Ultimately, start with your phone.. If you have a window you can stand in front of, you can light yourself with natural light Start with the bare minimum and then you can upgrade! This was filmed on a Sony A7S (a bit outdated now) and I have a Ring Light right behind my camera! The lamp I have in the back creates depth in the shot to make it feel a bit nicer :) You got this!!
