This convo about consent (the woman especially) feels like reinforcing the idea that sex is an action that a man does to a woman. Doesn't it involve two parties to mutually consent and communicate with each other to perform it? Why is the onus to communicate on the man and zero expectations for the woman to communicate what she wants and to ask for consent at all? It also seems to ignore that most sex is done through non-verbal cues for both parties, and asking for consent every 5 seconds isn't realistic and ruins the mood. It feels like this line of thinking of constantly asking assumes the woman has the agency of an infant and is unable to communicate on her own.
@timevans6670
3 жыл бұрын
Generally I agree, but the “every 5 seconds” thing is kinda bullshit. Occasional checks when u start doing something new throughout the encounter isn’t like some weird sjw thing where its more focused on not raping than actually having sex. Is it not normal to u to just ask “u okay?” Edit: Also just to add to the thing about the man “doing sex to” a woman. Most vanilla sex that they’re talking about here is usually gonna be something which involves the guy being physically more in control (ie: missionary). In cases where the more dominating and submissive roles are reversed, the onus should be a little more reversed.
@WhoBlah21

That is because our default cultural views on sex is based on men having power over women, we haven't made any strides in destroying that dynamic in a large scale. Also there's this weird myth that women are inherently the master of communication and body language, so whenever there's miscommunication or mixed signals the fault is usually on men.

Yeah that girl in the middle really doesnt help this problem. Everything she said had an air sexism to it and was fixated on attacking men. Dont want to sound like an incel here but it is quite frustrating.
@laurencewhite4809

We need to teach women to say "No, I don't want to f***ing do this, don't you get it!". I know that men can be dominating and overpowering, and as a gay man who's not built like a tank, I have been in many situations/dates where the other guy is the clearly stronger dominating part, and I can understand how that dynamic can make someone go along with stuff they normally would not, but if I don't clearly tell him "No, I don't want to do this", then I can understand how he might not know I was not okay with it. We need to teach people to verbally say "NO!" in uncomfortable situation. Im not saying you shouldn't ask for consent, but ultimately the person who is not willing to do something should be the one responsible for making sure that is known.
@efeghilmffdsee5216
3 жыл бұрын
women are uncomfortable saying no because it's not uncommon for men to use their physical advantage to their advantage, and be generally aggressive and domineering. We tried this - it's the whole point of "no means no" - but it doesn't always pan out like that.

@@efeghilmffdsee5216 no means no when the woman says no. From what I keep hearing from the women on these panels, it seems like they don’t even say no because the power imbalance makes going against the wishes of a man something they feel like they can’t do without repercussions. I don’t think they ever came to a conclusion on what can be done about that because the argument kept going in circles
@uncleiroh4650
3 жыл бұрын
@@efeghilmffdsee5216 I think the point is communication is a two way street. Some men will be assholes, but the vast majority of men will 100% listen to a stern “no”. Most men just don’t know when a girl is comfortable or having a good time because they’ll be too on their own head trying not to come across as a creep since most men aren’t as charismatic and smooth as they’d like to be, and seldom get hit on first by women. We also get rejected all the time as we do a majority of the approaching, so it’s abundantly obvious to us that women have the capability to say no, and it can be very effective for most men. It’s about both parties taking on some responsibility for themselves. Men have to be more open about asking and making women feel comfortable as if men don’t approach women most would never get into a relationship. And women have to be more direct about what they do and don’t want. Part of the reason this is a big problem is because in terms of personalities women are more agreeable than men on average. And anyone who knows about agreeableness is that agreeable people are much more likely to be taken advantage of, as they put other emotions in front of their own. Gotta teach girls that it’s not just ok to say “no”, but something that should be embraced by all people. Not consenting to something you’re not comfortable with doing. You can’t control anyone else’s actions, you can only control you’re own. Making it clear to others about your boundaries can break relationships but it makes you a much more grounded and respectable person to most.

When i was a little kid i remember watching this movie called cherry 2000 about a dystopian future where sex android exist and sex between real human beings has evolved into an actual litigation with lawyers each representing the man and woman. I know it's a bit far out there but i can easily see that becoming our future. One were you need written and verbal approval to engage in sexual activity between adults. Its depressing because the movie was suppose to be a cautionary tale about the effects of societal breakdown between women and men and how that will effect human relationships especially when technology is factored in. @@e.d.5766 sure but if we have the technology to create life like androids like in the movie; what is the point of even having sex to begin with? what is the point of humans even talking with other humans? if all our needs can be met via AI and Robotics and we can grow people in synthetic wombs why do males and females need to even speak to each other? we sexualize each other because that's what humans do in order to reproduce and continue the existence of the human race. Humans are sexual animals; thats the way we've been programmed for thousands of years. if we follow the movies logic down to its inevitable conclusion; there really is no need for humans to exist in the numbers we do or even leave planet if we can have all our needs met by our machines. That's called population control and evolution stagnation. you might hate humanity for all I know; but I don't, well at least not all of it 80% is pretty shitty to me. but they have a right to exist even if they are shitty to me. and I don't want humans to sit around and pleasure themselves for all eternity with machines. I want them to reach for the stars. In my opinion not seeking verbal consent from your partner and not giving verbal consent are both scummy things. Just as the guy relying on body language and visual cues is being shitty for not considering that he might be misconstruing it, the girl too is being shitty for withholding information that, had the guy known, he would be uncomfortable having sex with her. The guy consents to having sex with a consenting partner, so an informed consent cannot be formed if the truth of the matter isn't conveyed to him. It'd essentially be having sex with him under false pretenses. In that sexual encounter neither parties did their due diligence.

I find it weird how she was agreeing and nodding along with Destiny when he said the goal is that the other person should feel like they can say no without consequence, but when the other girl says something similar, she ads that even so they might have experienced stuff where things got violent when they were honest. Seemed a bit like she reacted differently depending on who was talking.
@uncleiroh4650
3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, Welcome to humans lad. I forget her name, but the second girl described it best. People are NOT rational. We are emotional by nature and utilize logic to rationalize our preconceived beliefs and biases. Twitch chat is a beautiful example of this. Depending on the source they will react completely differently to the same information. It’s annoying as hell but accepting this honestly feels like a weight has been lifted. It can be frustrating, but you’ve got to remember people are irrational so you’ve got to lay out you’re ideas in an open way and leave room for them to think about it. Also one of the reasons why people find it harder to concede a point in the heat of the moment but can realize many flaws in their own thought process and or actions after the fact. You can’t change anyone’s mind, you can only give them the opportunity to change their own. This is why them attacking Universe was completely for their own benefit. Despite what they may say, their primary purpose of the confrontation wasn’t to get him to change. They just wanted an outlet to project their frustrations onto, and was one of the reasons they passively cut him off from further conversations. Whether you agree with him or not shouting at him your opinions and dismissing his won’t do anything but make you feel better about yourself. It’s also why political commentators like Hasan Pakker or Ben Shabino are so popular. People don’t want to be “informed”, they want to listen to a person that agrees with them on 90% of issues. This is why the like/dislike ratio is so high even with gigantic political commentators. It’s just people preaching to the choir, getting their daily dopamine hit when their favorite personality makes fun of the other side and calls them smart for being on the “correct side”. It’s all just primal behavior that has found it’s way to manifest in modern society... I don’t know where I was going with this😗🤝🧐

Does she not realize that only the women she chooses to surround herself with think like her? Same as Destiny, he gets all his girls online, people who probably know him, getting a girl from a bar is so much different than how Destiny pulls, and so they have completely different personalities, turns on and offs, etc.

I also think the rules of consent vary a bit depending on what's being done (kissing vs sex). I think it's not the end of the world if you go in for a kiss (maybe do it slowly so they have a chance to back up or move their head) I don't necessarily believe you always have to ask I think kissing is where its okay to go more based on body language.

Eris was spot on when she said that men (and women) could say “I want you” as an opener and then you could gauge their reaction, and if you’re still unsure, then that’s the best time to be more explicit with the talk of consent. “I want you sexually, do you feel the same? If not, I won’t guilt you.” Destiny has been consistent with his stance on giving the person an “out” and never making them feel pressured or guilty for saying no. I think her basic argument is just that girls can be shy and be made to feel intimidated by social pressure which could at least partially compromise their consent. I think she is kind of taking a hard line on the issue and empathizing exclusively with the perspective of a shy and not especially sexual woman at some points... But overall her point is totally reasonable and especially as things went on she argued it more fairly. Ultimately even if 90% of the time people are confident enough to be straightforward with what they want the consequences are so great that an overly cautious mindset makes a lot of sense

Feel like american women in the last year have gone back 20 years in emotional maturity. The pressure argument is as dumb as it gets. Every action has implications, and being given a choice in itself puts pressure on you, be it if it's "I want you" or "do you want to have sex?" Be a fucking adult and say no. The way that girl talked about women felt, to me, like a mother discussing parenting skills with other moms at a book club. 100 ways not to upset your child when putting him to bed. Fucking disgusting. I also despise how she dared to use her opinion on the matter as the opinion of all women. I know for a fact that certain women are put off by questions questions questions before and during sex. Same women who in a non-confrontational interview, go around saying they like italian men because they are passionate. Well, I'm italian, and there ain't no "can you sign this form and state your consent on camera".. and nobody accuses anybody of ***e because they feel like they were pressured. You make a decision, stop crying about it. American women are 8 year olds.

Ay man this comment right here is SPECIFICALLY why I even spoke about this. I knew based on the general opinion of the panel I was gonna draw heat by saying what I said. However at that time there were like 600+ people watching on twitch and I felt like someone just like you might be listening and it might’ve been good to have another opinion, I tried to explain that there’s multiple ways of going about getting consent from people. You should go out and take L’s, you should test the waters and learn what people are like outside of the internet. Trust me, it takes time and experience and I believe that was really the only difference between me and the other panelists. I just had more experience, maybe, I don’t know, regardless nobody online can give you a roadmap through life and through life’s experience, but you can’t live in fear of upsetting people. Fact of the matter is eventually you will run into people that just aren’t into you. The key is learning to figure out who they are and move on. I hope you get out and take some losses, but earn those wins, and when you do get them it’ll feel that much better. Good luck to ya man.

@sorrycantspeakfrench

There are a lot of ways that people commonly do express and communicate consent that doesn't require a bureucrat's demeanor- although that might be required if you're e.g. dealing with a generally unexpressive partner, or if you're not perfectly socially apt (which most people aren't).
@winterfriday
3 жыл бұрын
I had a really hard time watching this. I don't exactly agree with Destiny's/many of the people on that calls opinions regarding asking consent for everything and being hyper explicit when interacting with women. Human interactions don't work that way and outside of the people who do operate in this manner, that sort of behavior will be viewed as extremely unusual. Part of being human is fumbling through social interactions and learning to pick up on non-verbal queues. Sometimes you'll make mistakes that make people uncomfortable. This is not toxic. Having uncomfortable social interactions is part of being human and should be used as a learning experience. It would be toxic if you had been given non-verbal and verbal queues from a person that your advances/interactions are not welcome but you continued doing it anyways. That said, I do agree with his point that the argument had become unproductive. As soon as dude with the hat expressed a differing opinion you could almost feel the energy in the room shift. A number of the people on that call became hostile or extremely smug and started dog-piling him. He was not allowed to make any points or argue his position without being interrupted or laughed at and I could see he was trying really hard to remain reasonable and open to listening in the face of this.
@buzzerking
3 жыл бұрын
Human interactions may not work that way now but that doesn't mean it can't or shouldn't be changed. Non-verbal queues are not the ultimate form of communication. They're largely socially constructed and often misinterpreted which can lead to some super head-fuckery. This learning experience you're talking about could largely be sped up if people were just direct and honest in their communication. When you leave it up to interpretation, people can make some wildly off base conclusions because they're operating with incomplete information.
@Nightknight1992

Maybe I'm wrong and when talking to a girl and she strokes her hair every 20 seconds, looks at me with wide open anime eyes, and continually touches me without noticing it that means that she doesn't consent? Props for sticking to your values and remaining good faith despite everyone on the panel attacking you. Greetings from Austria :)

"I want you" is putting the male opinion on the girl? That's not an opinion. Nobody's judging your value here. You're just expressing your desires in a reasonable way. If the girl tells you that, she's not forcing her opinion on you, she's just stating her desires for you. That's fine. I'm starting to see what Emmanuel Macron meant when he said America is exporting garbage ideas. You people are becoming detached from reality. What this girl was talking about wasn't even wrong, it sounded like it came from some parallel universe where desires don't even exist, and so she doesn't even understand what they mean.

If instead you explicitly askfor consent, you're taking the other person's wants into consideration AND you're implying you want them. So its objectively a win-win idk why you'd disgree.
@Lewa500

@@gabrielcolin1530 You don't get more explicit than this, and it's fine if you wanna expand on it with something like, "but I'll understand if you don't feel that way about me." You're not responsible for the other person's wants. You're responsible to communicate your own desires well and do so respectfully. The other person is more than capable of doing the same without your prompts and considerations.

@@Lewa500 It's not about being explicit, it's about taking the other person's wants into cosideration as well. In an ideal world i'd agree with you. But the way women have bee socialized since they were little really affects this. They were taught to avoid conflict or fawn whenever faced with an uncomfortable situation. Although there's also a responsibility on their part to express their feelings, i think it's better to air on the safe side. Cause the result of you doing it is you might feel a little bit cringe, but the result of not doing it is you making another person feel threatened or uncomfortable or potentially sexually harrassing them.

@@gabrielcolin1530 although, too an extent I can say I agree, I do believe that at some point for equal footing for both sexes that's going to have to change, it's furthering the idea that we have to hold their hand and that they can't say no, if someone says hey I want you , or something in that vain ,you don't have to accept that and I believe it's giving women more power that they are able to go "that's nice but no I don't want you", etc.
@Lewa500

@@gabrielcolin1530 I don't know what you teach girls in America, but in my country girls are not being taught to be timid about their feelings and desires. Avoid physical conflict? Absolutely. The world is dangerous, in a lot more different ways for women than for men. But this is something completely different. The people who would be mindful of the other person aren't the types of people who would be conducive to a threatening environment. They're not the types of people who would be coercive or engage in something without making sure the other person knows exactly what they're getting into. People like that already take the other person's desires into consideration during their interaction without the need for explicit verbal inquiries. They wouldn't go forward with anything unless they're reasonably sure the other person would likely reciprocate. So something like "I want you" coming from them would be a lot more measured and considerate than if it came out of someone who didn't care what the other person wanted, and is just trying to get into their pants as fast as possible. Girls are more than capable of differentiating the two and responding appropriately. I've seen it plenty of times to know this is true. They don't need the extra coddling. Maybe they do where you're from, but not here.

The real question is why the burden of ensuring comfort is on the man? If a woman is uncomfortable, it makes much more sense for her to just say so, rather than have the man ask a million questions. It almost seems as if the entire discussion is biased against men from the start, since everybody just assumes that they have all of these responsibilities. I think that if either the man or the woman are uncomfortable, it should be their responsibility to speak out.

1:09:32 First of all, the true irony here is that this guy has expressed a level of discomfort that the pro-consent crowd seems not to have picked up on, and so they are ironically shoving their opinions down his throat. Secondly, "women" aren't telling anyone anything, it's basically these two chicks alone who are pushing their niche ideas onto him.

Hot take; if no one ever tells you you're wrong or says "hey, that's kinda messed up." how the fck will you know if ur doing something wrong? The only things we think are obvious are thing we have gotten explained to us or known our entire life. As an example im a guy who loves hugs, but i never tought about "maybe not everyone likes giving hugs" untill someone said to me "im not much of a hugger." I tought about that and actually started asking be4 hugging adding "we can handshake instead" if they hesitated. (right now im not doing either for obvious reasons. i'm down bad)

my point is how would i know if someone is uncomfortable unless they tell me. I can ask you every step of the way but if you just say yes how the fck would i know anything different. At some point you have to speak up. Most people say they will consider your feelings but it's impossible if you never give them the chance. I think school's should start teaching people confidence because it seems everyone is scared to tell people who's doing something wrong that they are in fact, doing something wrong.

Also if the situation is so difficult for some of these people. Consent is a secondary thought to me in this situation. My first thought these people are so socially immature. 40m in I'm not following the woman in the middle at all; 15m earlier she's saying you need to have the clearest, most straight-forward questions of consent, but then suddenly it's enough with something more conversational like "you wanna come back to my place?". What's her point? She disagrees with the others saying that asking for consent is good, but you don't have to do it so stiffly, but then suddenly she's saying the same thing in different words.

Most guys are obviously not rapists or murderers and I feel like a lot of these women either had past trauma that is clouding their judgement or don't go out a lot and watch a shit ton of Investigation Discovery. I also feel as though a lot of the responsibility is being put on the men and nothing is really being said what women can do to make certain environments more comfortable for them or both parties. The "make sure they have a nice way to say no" is real. I always try to give people an option to say no, that isnt explicitly the word "No". Even in normal, non sexual communications. I find it eases people and it eases me lol. I want to know that someone wants to do something for me because they want to, not because of fear. I want to know a rejection "now" rather than 5 months in the future. Makes life easier to navigate imo.
