As I was learning, and for years, my driving range mat performance was very solid but always fell apart on the course. The reason was exactly what you described. I was striking just behind the ball and consistently making what looked like fine shots....at the range. t was not until I understood this and then abandoned typical range mats did my iron game begin to improve. Adding a divot board a couple years fundamentally changed how I saw the golf swing and made it clear how narrow a window we are working with. Thanks for this deeper explanation and reminder.

Rob, congrats on a great lesson😊. You are the first pro to explain why it is so important to hav3 a good ball strike , that is , it enables a golfer to hit consistent distances with all clubs. I cannot believe how so many pros stress why it is important to strike irons well but don’t give the reason that it is all about distance control and not just hitting it further. Well done Rob 😅

Makes a lot of sense this , Iv been adopting my pitching set up and swing to guarantee contact . Because Iv got my chest over the ball n having that pivot anchor waist movement. So Iv been watching Dan Grieves a short game coach where the left hip is very important and the right hip comes back the same way . I found this helps weight forward . Also right shoulder over the ball on down swing . Thank you for the videos Rob very helpful the stack n tilt definitely the way forward

You are the best teacher online! I went out this weekend and used the lesson on iron for the "wrench". Gotta say it wasn't comfotable but after 10-15 swings got better. i was still topping the ball a lot. Probably gotta keep the arms straighter. Is having 75% or so on left side sufficient? I couldn't get myself to add more
@robcheneygolf1

Yes, 75% should be fine.

Excellent video. I started playing golf at age 50 during covid. I learned contact by doing exactly what you stated...start with the weight forward, arms straight, chipping motion and progress - using that same technique - to a half swing and so on. I shoot low 90s and still probably use a half swing most of the time just to control the ball more.

Hi Rob, thanks for the videos! I'm one of Parky's students in Denmark and his teaching, combined with your videos, has really accelerated my golf education and made me fall in love with the game. I think a video on the role of balance could be interesting. I don't see it explicitly discussed that often but it is clearly very important. Talking about how poor balance leads to misstrikes and how to monitor and improve balance during the swing could be helpful for a lot of students. All the best!

Thanks Rob.I've hit the ball on the thinnish side for 40years though I've played off 12 and now I know why. I've stayed off the course for two weeks and practised focusing about 3 inches in front of the ball relentlessly.For the first time in my life I've had the joy of compressing the ball, much higher flight and that 'smack' sound of striking the ball correctly, not that horrible juddering click of a thin shot. Can I risk taking this to the course?

The one major need I've lost as I've aged and the singular point of emphasis every time I swing a club in practice and in rounds To me nothing else matters until I gain the consistency you so beautifully demonstrate. I could watch this daily and thank you for this important lesson. Stay well my friend-Russ.

Exelent video - explains why i after 2 years of practise on the mat still cannot hit the Ball on grass. I hit very precise just before the Ball not to damage the surface of my carpet in the House and not to damage my grass in the garden. Never heard any explain it that clear - and i have seen 1000ś of videos here. Thx Rob

For budget options you can use a towel or painters tape. For the towel / towel drill place it a club head behind the ball, the better you get the closer you can put the towel. I would use a dish rag or something that you don't mind destroying, I ruined a nice golf towel before I figured that out. If your mats are dry you can also use wide painters tape.
@robcheneygolf1

Thanks Rob - I really appreciate this and have ordered a divotboard. One question, please. The board looks to be one or two centimetres thick, so if we practice with that won't we then be at risk of hitting thin shots on the course where the ball is lower on the ground? Cheers!
@billmckenna151
28 күн бұрын
If you take a yoga mat or even a piece of thick carpet or a floor mat, then you can place that next to the divot board, so you are standing the same height as the divot board. Or if you have a hitting mat, just stand on the hitting mat and place the divot board next to it. Hope that makes sense because I had the same question as you, so thats what I did. The divot board website claims that your body weight on a real golf course sinks further in the grass than the weight of a ball, so they claim there should be no issue. But depending on what type of courses you play, that may or may not be true. The creator of divot board has stated they are in the process of making an additional mat to place next to the divot board, so that pretty much confirms your concern as well as what mine was.

Would appreciate some discussion of lower body weight forward while the head stays at the ball. When trying to get my weight forward I tend to lead with my upper body. That gets my hands “past” the ball and results in all sorts of heroic , ill fated attempts to strike the ball. The natural adjustment to that is to hang back with my lower body with similarly poor results

Low point is key. I agree that Faldo lesson is trash. Instead of the golf box drill, I would put a strip of painter's tape down on the floor and try and hit in front of that everytime. Bryson showed this is one of his videos awhile ago.

Is it possible that eye focus forward may promote better low point but also may promote an error of more handle dragging/ chicken wing with less right tilt? There are some pros like morikawa whose focus and head position is significantly behind the ball at impact.
@phreak761

Personal preference.
@robcheneygolf1

I wouldn’t say handle dragging/chicken wing are directly correlated to where you place your eyes/focus on the ground. They are separate things in my view. Not everyone will benefit from looking in front of the ball, but I’ve seen it help many people improve their ground contact location.

I bought one, cheaper version, and so helpful when practicing at home. I just use a shorter iron and practice on my low point, plus watch my shows. This has been sooo beneficial and everyone would benefit of just doing this every evening to build that muscle memory.
