Great to see you do one of these. They have an awesome clean, "jingily" sound. Perfect for rythem and finger picking. Try to find an angle fret model, quite hard to find, but worth the search. The tone seems to be a bit more aggressive, and the angled frets are very easy to navigate the fret board, especially when you are using full barred notes. I'm a Gibson guy true blue, but there's nothing like a Rick/Gibson/Strat line up in a 3 guitar song. I may be wrong, but I believe Blackfoot used this line up in "highway song" in the studio. Heard from a guitar center employee that the rickenbacker factory (located in Santa Ana California) likes to keep their production as close to what they were doing in the 1960's. To do that they use certain materials that are illegal to use in mass quantities. So to get around that they do a limited run on certain models on what they can produce legally using the materials they want. I believe thats why the price may fluctuate from year to year. John Lennon bought his first Rickenbacker 325 when The Beatles were playing in Hamburg Germany. Among my stash of guitars, there are 8 Rickenbackers along with a 4003 bass. I can tell ya that your first Rick is bootcamp for Rickenbackers. but once it's all sussed out, it's not been an issue for me, personally. Trogly, Rickenbacker also make a full-scale version of the 325 called the 350v63. I have one (along with its discontinued 12-string sister) and its full scale is easier to play...plus...you don't need 12's (or heavier) in order to intonate it like you do with the 325. I have smallish hands and Rick's banjo necks can be a character builder, even for me, with 12 strings crammed on top of that skinny bit of real estate, BUT their 660 and 1993plus models have wider necks. Those are especially a blessing in the 12-string persuasion. IMO, Ricks are like strats or whatever where if ya GOTTA have that tone, that's the guitar you go for. Peter Buck with REM uses their 12-strings and Paul Weller from The Jam is another notable Rick player. Regarding prices, Andy Babiuk's great shop, Fab Gear, is pretty good about advertising his prices and I've picked up a couple of rare Ricks from him, as well. Andy Babiuk's one helluva guy and also a not only a fine bassist (Empty Hearts with Elliot Easton) but also the writer of the Beatles Gear and Stones Gear books. Thanks for this vid.

My mother assembled John Lennon’s, 1964 325 C-64 “Miami” Rickenbacker Guitar. My mother... Dorothy J. Tandle "Dotty" was working at (RIC) Electro Strings Rickenbacker Guitars back in February 1964 in Santa Ana California. There was only 10 employees at the time and two woman. Mom was the first woman factory worker hired at Rickenbacker. Francis C. Hall, CEO of Ric had the idea to meet with the Beatles when they came to do the Ed Sullivan Show and give them some new guitars. Mr. Hall gave Harrison a new twelve string guitar when he met them. (assembled by Dotty) When Francis C. Hall got back from N.Y., after talking to John, Paul and Ringo he had a new guitar made for John. F.C. Hall presented Lennon with a new 325 to replace his road weary 1958 one during the group's first trip to New York City. Rush shipped to the Hotel Deauville in Miami where it was used for the second performance in "Ed Sullivan Show" on February 16th. Nicknamed at the factory… “Miami Special” John used the new guitar on The Beatles second Sullivan appearance and on the group's subsequent tours and albums. The phone rang at our house at 6:10AM with the GM of Ric Ward Deaton asking if my mom could come in ASAP to work on a special rush order guitar My mother was asked to follow Lennon’s Custom guitar from start to finish. This was the Black & White semi-hollow bodied “Miami” model (serial number db122, d=1964, b=Feb.). After the woodshop cut out the body, she sanded the body, then worked on the neck & fret board, then she assembled the guitar after the finish was applied.

They don’t advertise the prices because they are relatively expensive. It’s an OLD salesman’s trick. Many old-timers knew that if they could talk to you (or at least communicate) about the merchandise, they had a better chance of making the sale for high-priced goods. Years ago, I worked on a sales-floor. The owner said to NEVER allow a customer to leave the store without talking to him, assuming of course that you hadn’t been able to make the sale. I saw him turn over at least 80% of what otherwise would have been lost sales. Jerry was amazing!

The most popular Ricks are the 330 and 360 series. They come in 6 and 12 string versions, and with either 2 or 3 pickups. The 360s have nicer appointments and stereo output for "Rick-O-Sound". You should review these in the future.

Rickenbacker basically has zero MAP, so knowing the price doesn't change anything - there's very little to no wiggle room on a new one. That said, they're not for everybody - whether this or the other models throughout the range - but they are among the most consistently high quality I've ever played - way more so that Gibson amd Fender. You hold one and it feels like quality. As for the small scale of the 325 in any of its iterations, the good news is there's a full 24.75" scale version 350. Urban myths aside, Lennon picked his because first, in the Hamburg days, he was a George Shearing fan and Tootls Thielman played a Ric hollow-body. John saw this one in Hamburg - the only one from a recent trade show and the rest is literally history. True, he found the 3/4 scale fitting for his 5'9" frame not being a tall guy - I think also because he was still transitioning from banjo chords taught him by his Aunt Mimi. Tony Babiuk's fantastic Bible, "The Beatles Gear" is filled with all the minutiae of every instrument. As for the fret buzz check the relief - those dual rods are not very forgiving and these need a careful set up to truly shine, er jangle.

Maurice Gibb also played the Bass in the band. I’ve seen many videos of him playing the Rickenbacker 4001 like Chris Squire and Getty Lee played. I play a much later version 2017 4003. I bought mine brand new for $2,250 from a dealer in Lexington Kentucky. Best bass of the 5 or so that I have Fender J-Bass and P-Bass are great sounding but the Rickenbacker is, well greater. Especially with the Rick-O-Sound, being able to play thought 2 amps. The Neck pickup though one and the bridge pickup through a separate amp. The sound manipulation is endless.

The fingerboard on these models is historically Padauk very orangey colored fingerboard wood, the 12 strings usually at least the historic models is Bubinga, both are african grown woods. The basses I think are bubinga too. But they do vary with what is going on in the Wood world these days.

actually, the Ric you showed Lennon with is not his original Ric, and it is, indeed, a 1964 model. The give away is the white pickguard (although there's more, but not immediately obvious). His '58 had a gold pickguard. On their first visit to the U.S. the one with the white pickguard was gifted to him by Ric, and he played it on their Miami appearance.

I have a friend who used to work at Sweetwater, he tested and inspected every single guitar and bass that they got in, and he told me that Rickenbacker’s quality control is completely nonexistent. He compared it to the Quality Control issues that Gibson had in the 2000’s and early 2010’s. But whereas Gibson turned themselves around and started worked to improve both their quality control and reputation, John Smith, the CEO of Rickenbacker seems to think that since the small batches of guitars are gonna sell regardless of the insane price and quality issues that they shouldn’t even bother. If Rickenbacker really cared about their reputation they’d take steps to improve their quality and not spend so much time, energy and money sending their army of lawyers after websites selling build-your-own Guitar kits.

Regarding the pricing, this has nothing to do with the internet. The call for price policy existed during mail order catalog days as well. While not the only reason, one reason this is done is to protect small local dealers from competition from larger distributors who can run smaller margins and buy at lower prices because they buy larger volumes. If everyone is prevented from advertising the price, then the playing field is level. You find out the price when you are motivated enough to speak with a dealer and purchase. Since you don't know the price, you are just as likely to buy from a local guy as going through the mail. Mail order still captures those without the local dealer, but doesn't trample on the local guys territory.

Those who own a Ricky know what I'm talking about. In order to play one the correct way you have to be a part of it. It's like driving say an American car then driving a Lambo. If you want the Rickenbaker sound, you have to play at like you an exotic object in your hands. I have a 4003 and it's not like playing my P bass

In the very early part of the 80's I bought a custom ordered Rickenbacker 360 WB (with binding) Fire Glo with vintage toaster pickups. The price with case and shipping? $650.00 Then in 87 I got a Pete Townshend signature from the same Beatle instrument dealer who had a great relationship with the factory. Again the price was low... About $750. Also got a 4003 bass for around $700... It was the time to buy them for sure... Those guitars are close to 3k each these days. Wish I had them now. I'd be selling.

I see why their known to be modified,if I had it the top PICKGUARD would go,I'd switch out all the hardware with hardware that'd work with my tools, magnetic,(at least where it don't affect the sounds), I actually take and switch the neck pickup with the bridge pickup( playing mostly metal and hard rock makes more sense to me to have a hotter pickup at the bridge, but I'm also a bass player soooo). It sounds really good though

Wow what a difference compared to my two solid body rick’s. One is 2 pick ups and the other one 3 pick ups. I bought mine in 1971 mine are all candy pearl white. I love the early stuff much nicer. My only complaint is it feels smaller to hold and play. Maybe it is just me I’m much more use to playing my Gretchen falcon big hollow body guitar bought that one in early 1984 period. I don’t quite get the two different plugs on the base of my one guitar.

Austin what a great review, I think it's your best yet. I've just been ticking like and watch later for the past few weeks. So early hours and a pot of coffee I caught up. Wow what a difference to the show, very slick. I love it. Rickenbacker, It's possible that they use a melamine finish. It's cellulose based but much tougher than normal cellulose lacquers. Great for pro players. You also need a different range of buffing compounds due to it's hardness. Thanks for the MIJ bass review, I did watch that straight away. So that is me up to date see you on the next episode Trogly. Your getting soooo much better, regards fae Scotland
