I was a lawyer representing homeowner associations for 15 years & I came up with a theory. There are 3 types of Board Members. Category One, people who are altruistic & believe it’s their civic duty. (There are very few of these). Category Two, people who have an issue. Perhaps they hate the parking rules or the manager. They get on the Board, solve their issue & move on. And, finally, Category Three, people who have no control in their daily life & want to boss their neighbors. They often masquerade as Category One or Two and are, by far, the largest number of Board members I ever encountered!

I've experienced something similar. It was back in college. I was driving a shitty car and babysitting a kid in a neighborhood that was a gated community during the summer. Mom left the pool card for us to go to the pool. Kid wanted to go to the pool, naturally. We get to the pool and the moment I get out, a woman marches out to me and asks for my address. I freeze because I didn't know their address, I just knew how to get to their house. I respond that I have a pool card and hold it up. (It was blank and had a chip inside that opened the gate.) She was like, "oh no no no. You could have swiped that from anywhere. I need an address." Then the kid piped up from her car seat, "Hey Karen!" Apparently the kid knew "Karen." Karen relented and let us in. A great example of something I would not put up with today. In college, I was embarrassed. Today, I'd be pissed. Edit: Karen didn't work for the HOA or anything. She was just a bitchy nosy neighbor who apparently harrassed people at the pool she didn't recognize. The kid's mom confirmed when I told her that she did it all the time.
