Considering that this was for the high school version of the musical, I think it fits but in a different manner. Blue is raunchy but it’s more geared towards adults and mature audiences so it makes sense. Yeah there is a sense of uncomfortableness but it is still a funny song. You’re Welcome is much different. The message is supposed to be made clear for high schoolers who are about to be adults. Sexual assault is not funny and should not be seen as funny. Both songs work for their respective versions and I think they should be appreciated.

I agree with you but I think I like this version better. Cause in You're Welcome it shows sexual assault as what is us, scary and wrong. But in Blue the boys sing it like if they were caught they wouldve just said "boys will be boys" And though I do love blue I think this song more fits the tone of what's happening, they are predators even though they're in high school. And I think what makes this one so scary is that many people have the mindset of they guys in this, "you should be happy I want you so shut up" kind of thing.

Dont feel that Blue is about rape or sexual assault tho, because the entire song consisted of pleading for Veronica's consent. Sure, it is still bothersome to have someone still attempt to convince you to have sex with them even when you clearly said no.... But there is a huge difference between bragging how awesome one is, in a dumb attempt to convince you to have sex, Vs saying some very intrusive comments about your body all the while actively trying to force onself onto you.

For the people who say that this song justifies JD’s actions more than Blue, I have this to say: Regardless of the tone of the song, it’s STILL attempted rape regardless of which song you’re listening to. Blue being more comedic than this one doesn’t change that. It also doesn’t change the fact that JD only killed Kurt and Ram because they made Veronica cry. From what I’ve seen of the lines before “Our Love Is God,” Veronica doesn’t say to JD that Kurt and Ram tried to rape her. So it’s still wrong in both versions. As for Veronica saying they could’ve turned out good people, it’s the same argument that I used initially.

I think Blue and Your Welcome are both good and both songs accomplish what they're trying to do. Blue is supposed to be funny raunchy, and it does that. It makes you laugh and you sing it with a group of people who you're having fun with. Blue shows Kurt and Ram as just stupid dumb teens, not really a threat. Your Welcome however is the opposite. This song has a much darker tone and it's supposed to be scary, and it does that. It makes you feel uncomfortable. It gives this feeling of dread. It shows Kurt and Ram as being dangerous. It does show them as assaulters and not stupid teens. That's why I love this song, it shows sexual assault for what it is, it shows that yes, it is dangerous. But the hard reality is that's how alot of teenage boys are.

People are saying that this makes JD look too sympathetic, but the original musical kinda did that too. Remember when it was really popular and everyone romanticized JD & Veronica? At least west end added "I Say No" which makes it obvious that it's abusive. And it's good that they aren't portraying sexual assault as funny!

In conclusion, Blue wasn't making fun of sexual assault, just making fun of Kurt and Ram in their drunk and shiny state.

So no one cares but here's why this doesn't work in the context of the musical. With Blue, the tone of the scene depends entirely on the choreography. I've seen productions where they play it like a cat and mouse chase where Veronica is mostly in control of the situation and never under any real threat. I've also seen productions where they pin her to the ground and generally are threatening to her safety. But the lyrics in and of themselves aren't that bad. They allow for that kind of interpretation. You're welcome isn't like that. They lyrics are threatening all on their own. There's no ambiguity. That ambiguity is important. If Veronica was truly under threat and barely managed to escape, it almost sort of...justifies what JD does to them. It makes him a hero for protecting the women of their school by taking out two rapists (or as close as they can be with Veronica still managing to escape at the end). Even worse, it makes Veronica's regret at their funeral into a scene where a victim is saying "they still had room to grow. They could've turned out good." That scene only works because Blue is so playful and open for interpretation. You can see it as "well, they need to learn that no means no, not 'keep trying to convince me' but they never actually tried to hurt her...I can see how maturity could make them better people." But with You're welcome? All that goes out the window. And frankly the idea of a near-rape victim singing about how "they could've turned out good" makes me want to vomit because it's so close to something we hear in real life wheen accused rapists are put on trial ("they had such bright futures" is a common news reel refrain). The idea of the victim herself saying it...no thank you. Basically what I'm saying is you're welcome makes Veronica out to be some kind of Stockholm syndrome victim where she's left standing up for her attempted rapists and JD into a hero for protecting the community from them. Which is literally the exact opposite point of Heathers.
@galexandra
5 жыл бұрын
I understand and agree with what you're saying about the context of the musical- it is sad how Veronica ends up saying they could have grown up. But just thinking about the song alone, it makes the whole scene a lot more serious, showing rape and assault as a lot worse than the off b-way version, which plays it off as playful and somewhat acceptable. However I do agree with what you're saying in the context of the musical. Also I think it adds more ambiguity to JD's actions, like you said, but not necessarily in a bad way. Even in the original, although JD's actions are bad, he's doing what he believes is right. In the original, him killing Kurt and Ram could be seen as an over reaction, and a bit less so in this version, but I think motive stays the same. Also, even if you have a morally good reason to kill someone, I don't think it is ever a morally good action, so in that sense it doesn't take away from JD's character.
@thornlings

Hermione Granger I wanted to really consider your points so I rewatched a couple different productions to see how Blue is played out. And I think the difference here is that in my opinion, Blue isn't actually about rape or assault. People's main praise for You're Welcome is that they feel Blue made it into a joke while You're Welcome takes it seriously. But do me a favor and just read the lyrics of Blue. Put aside choreography (which is different in every production and thus up for interpretation). At no point do either of them threaten Veronica. In fact, the entire song is them begging for her consent. Heck they even use the word "please" repeatedly. They spend the whole song asking her to hook up with them, and keep trying to persuade her despite her refusal. Obviously they need to learn that "no means no" not "keep trying to convince me" but they never take her "no" to mean "Yes" and without choreography to indicate them actually getting physical with her, the idea that Blue makes fun of rape and assault falls apart. Certainly there are productions where the choreography is physically threatening or violent, but the lyrics don't indicate that on their own, and the production with the original off Broadway cast (the best we have for a standard of how it's "supposed" to be interpreted) never puts Veronica under any real threat. This is why I don't believe Blue made fun of rape or assault and without that argument to convince me, I have to return to the point that by taking it seriously, You're Welcome does a great disservice to both Veronica and JD's character arcs as I mentioned in my first comment.

So this song is okay, but the problem I’ve always saw with it is how threatening it truly is. A criticism of Blue is how it makes light of sexual assault and rape since the song’s purpose is comedic. While I do agree that the show and the fandom handles the whole date rape too lightly, I don’t think this song fixes anything. In fact, it causes more problems. It introduces this whole “girls are asking for it based on what they wear”, which, personally, is more threatening by itself than Blue ever was. Kurt and Ram in You’re Welcome are already justifying their sexual assault or rape. Blue was two drunk teenagers who wouldn’t take no for an answer, albeit a problem in of itself. The importance of how threatening these songs feel is big in interpreting this musical. This show and its fandom has romanticized JD as a misunderstood character who sees himself as protecting Veronica. I personally prefer interpreting this JD similarly to the movie’s version. I do not think JD truly loves Veronica. He could have very strong feelings about her, maybe lust of some sort, but I do not think his mental state allows him to truly love another person. It’s like in I Say No. He is using this “love” to justify him killing people. JD is the enemy of this show. Justifying any one of his actions is a slippery slope with real life consequences. You’re Welcome implies that JD was almost justified in killing these guys. We as the audience want to see these guys punished. The portrayal of Kurt and Ram in Blue, due to its lack of real threatening lyrics, is much less horrible. They are stupid teenage boys who, while are not taking “no” for an answer, are not doing anything until they can change that no into a yes. They could have changed and gotten more mature. There are plenty of people that were terrible in high school who learned from their mistakes and became better people. That’s what was so tragic about killing Heather C and Kurt and Ram. No one knew if they could have changed themselves. The musical shows that JD’s decision was the wrong one, but adding this song complicates that. Implying JD is justified in killing Kurt and Ram only further romanticizes the character, which is a very dangerous precedent for relationships in the audience’s lives. While everyone would say, “oh I obviously wouldn’t stay with someone if they were killing people”, that’s just an extreme. If you romanticize JD, you might subconsciously drawn to people like JD. You’re justifying bursts of anger towards your significant other, lying to them to achieve their own goal, and manipulating them to do exactly what you want them to do.
@ArtFoxNaru
4 жыл бұрын
This song doesn’t justify it introduce the idea of “what you’re wearing is your fault for our actions”. Everyone listening that knows that everything that Kurt and Ram say are WRONG. That’s why the songs makes you uncomfortable. Also JD was always a complicated ch ra yer since the begin to and origin in the movie. We feel sorry for this character with a tragic backstory but we want to justify and help him. That’s what the movie and musical do: test us and then give us the conclusion. that regardless of his reasons: it was never his right to choose who lives or dies. The audience gets invested in him but the hard truth is that you can’t help/save someone if they don’t want or aren’t willing to get it. If people want more comedy with this, the performance can be altered just like how in versions of Blue there are some that are more threatening despite the fact the lyrics don’t take the situation seriously. Overall enjoy what you enjoy and debating over it online won’t do anything lol
@meaghanbohny9565
4 жыл бұрын
ArtFox Naru lol, I know debating about it online doesn’t change anything. I’m just stating my opinion. And I still believe that this song does, unintentionally, come off as more of a threat to Veronica than Blue ever did. It’s fine to portray date rape as a serious issue, but it is a problem if the audience, like I’ve seen in some other comments, feel like Kurt and Ram deserved to die because of how awful their actions were. Really what worried me a lot was Veronica’s response to this situation and I can’t exactly remember why I didn’t put this is the comment so sorry for bringing it up here. In Blue, she’s merely watching the song, more annoyed than anything else. In You’re Welcome, she’s actively admitting that she’s in danger, if she doesn’t do something, she will be sexually assaulted. And as the audience, we sympathize with Veronica and (this is just something that I’ve encountered personally) a lot of the fans are younger(which is why I believe that JD is romanticized ) so I was just concerned that the younger people, especially because this change was first applied to the high school edition of heathers, would be able to see one of JD’s actions as “good” or at the very least “justified so hey maybe JD isn’t really that bad” when obviously they weren’t and he was really that bad. I’m sorry if I’ve gone on too long and I’m really not trying to start anything haha.

THIS. Literally the entire point of Heathers, both the play and the movie, is that high school is temporary but death is permanent. Veronica's whole turning point comes when she realizes that JD isn't killing people by accident. And then you've got that comedic juxtaposition where Veronica feels guilty because Kurt and Ram didn't necessarily deserve to die, yet their deaths bring about such cartoonishly positive change. By making them out and out rapists, there's no conflict anymore when they get shot. They go from horny but mostly harmless idiots to genuinely bad guys who get what's coming to them. "Oh but Blue made fun of sexual assault and date rape" Get over it, this is a comedy play about teen suicide. People who get squeamish over dark humor should not be the target audience for HEATHERS, of all things. It's like complaining that Robocop is too violent, it's like that by design and if you have an issue then it's probably because it is explicitly not made for you.

I was actually taking this seriously until "I do not think his mental state allows him to truly love another person". Just... that's really fuckin' ableist. Also fandoms "romanticize" bad characters because it's a fantasy, it's fiction. Essentially playing with dolls. While there is genuine concern over these communities normalizing toxic behavior as fine and okay, there is nothing inherently wrong with writing fanfic or whatever about JD where he's portrayed as a good person or "hero" - what IS wrong with it is when people refuse to educate others on these issues, thus, people who don't know any better (primarily young people in fandom) become misinformed, sometimes dangerously so. I get that no one really wants to tack a huge disclaimer onto their fanfic, but as a community, it is our collective responsibility to educate and inform newer members, and not doing so won't just hurt those who are uninformed. You can't have the community without the responsibility. And the thing about collective responsibility is that if you're unable to fulfill it for some reason, other people will pick up your slack! It's not an individual responsibility. But if everyone refuses to do it, then it just doesn't get done, and the whole thing falls through - which is why we need to do it when we can.

i love your welcome so much more, it’s almost like the real life of sexual assault. from the victim blaming to veronicas monologue it’s seems so much more real but makes blue gives the listener that feeling of being uncomfortable and almost disgusted. the lyrics to your welcome made me genuinely mad and almost threatened which is the general reality of rape and sexual assault and that feeling of panic of needing to get away “stay awake stay aware, you’re not in real danger until they grab your hair.”

Okay honestly this song is disturbing. They are talking about how Veronica is "lucky" that they're paying attention to her. Saying things such as, "If you don't want me staring why you wearing the skirt?" and "hey, you wanted to be popular!" saying that it's HER fault that they're trying to R^PE HER. And the worse part is, a lot of SA victims hear things like this from the people who assaulted them or when they speak up about their SA. to any survivors or SA or R^pe, I'm so sorry and I hope you can move on on day and be happy. You are more than what those people did to you.

@-leahplays-5913
2 жыл бұрын
Just a reminder: this song was really only created because a lot of people found it offensive how Blue kind of made r@pe seem like a joke with a funny song. And this one kind of shows how terrible it really is. But I completely agree with how this one doesn’t really work in the context of the musical. It kind of makes JD seem like a hero for k!lling two r@pists but in reality Kurt and Ram really didn’t cause harm to Veronica, and JD only wanted to kill them bc they made Veronica cry. Sure they weren’t very good people, but JD had no right nor reason to end their lives. These two murders are supposed to show how psychotic JD is and how obsessed he is with Veronica, but this song sort of makes JD looks good bc he k!lled people who were hurting Veronica, which is not the case at all. This song also makes Veronica’s “they still had room to grow” make no sense bc that’s justifying what Kurt and Ram tried to do to Veronica in this song. With Blue, it makes more sense bc they weren’t actually trying to hurt her and were kind of “asking” for her consent. So Veronica saying that line with Blue makes more sense.
@gador5027
2 жыл бұрын
I agree so much with you! Also, I personally feel like it also doesn't quite fit with the rest of the musical in terms of style and vibes. This sounds a lot more like a song by Lin-Manuel Miranda than you'd expect, with all the rapping, when there isn't any of it in the rest of Heathers beyond, maybe, spoken verses. The music lacks the connection to the general vibes of the rest of the album, and the lyrics fail to convey the light playfulness with which the musical addresses heavy topics such as teen suicide, bullying, and EDs. It's like a bucket of cold water, with such a clear and explicit condemnation of the topic at hand, and it personally threw me off the beat when I first listened to the West End cast recording.
@renx202
Жыл бұрын
I agree, but for different reasons. The musical is a **dark** comedy and topics like murder and suicide is both being used as satire and for laughs so it's weird how rape is the only topic that gets this treatment. Not to mention, this is the only song that has a darker outline, which means it's an odd one from the other songs in the musical. Either way, both Blue and You're Welcome are songs about attempted rape. While the tones are different, the topics are still the same. So, saying You're Welcome paints JD as being more in the right shouldn't be a problem. You should have enough common sense that what Kurt and Ram is doing is bad in both songs.

If i see a "blue is better" one more time i will flip. Why you're welcome is better 1. General tune. It doesn't lose it's catchiness, the music is just a bit more intense and scary near the start. It's actually faster than blue at many points. It's still a good tune though, arguably better than blue. 2. Humor. Whilst blue made rape seem like a joke, you're welcome adds a serious side whilst still adding humor into it. 3. Veronica. You're welcome allows us to sympathize with Veronica, as she directly tells the audience how she feels every so often. 4. Kurt and ram. Instead of the whole takeaway of the song being 'oh drunk people rape', it shows a lot more. It shows how Kurt and ram were blaming Veronica for their attraction, saying she's 'playing hurt', making themselves the victims (which is true to real life most of the time) 5. Before and after. Without you're welcome, we wouldnt have the phone call at the start and the cow pasture scene, which i think is hilarious. Without it we wouldn't have never shut up again, which is an amazing song and one of my favourites. Everyone says that swordfight is better than most reprises. Anyways I'm done

The whole music part is subjective. The whole rap thing is out of place in the soundtrack (along with never shut up again) and o think blue fits much better. Plus this song just makes Kurt and ram irredeemable rapists when the whole point is that yes they were gross and wouldn’t take no for an answer, but they weren’t going to do anything until that no turned into a yes. These guys didn’t care at all and makes prom or hell make no sense. Blue makes it seem like they’re two drunk horny douches who could improve and mature, while your welcome makes them creepy rapists who couldn’t be redeemed and deserved to die

Since I’ve seen quite a few people do these, here’s how I see the Blue/You’re welcome comparison is Blue is more on Kurt and Ram’s side. They just wanna get laid honestly. Veronica was taken to the date r-pe and they wanted her desperately and were drunk, hence the more catchy and playful song. You’re welcome is more from Veronica’s perspective. It really shows you how scary these situations really are with the comments like “if you don’t want me staring, why you wearing that skirt?” It really puts you on the spot while still being a little playful obviously with Kurt and Ram being drunk.
