I agree, archery is an art form, but I am highly skeptical of bow hunting since it unnecessarily prolongs the suffering of the animal depending in the hit, even with perfect aim. A hunter should be respectful of the animal and part of that is to kill it as quickly and as painless as possible, for that a rifle simply is the best tool since it's more accurate, lethal and depending on the situation you can go for an immediate follow up shot.

This helped me get my deer faster: Take a compass reading on the direction where it leaves your sight, and make a guesstimate as to the distance in yards before you get down from your stand. Also listen to where you last heard it, compass reading and distance estimate that too. I found I can find the blood trail faster, and on one occasion, I walked to where I heard the deer fall over.

Very good information. I work in a store that sells all kinds of hunting gear and one of our biggest thing is bow hunting. These videos help new bow hunters and of course, they are very good reminders for those of us who already know about hunting 👌You can never know enough when it comes to hunting. Better to have the knowledge than train on the animal through trial and error. Naturally people need to experience these things themselves in order to fully understand them, but getting prepared is the way to go.

This is an excellent series. The one issue I always see with shot placement videos, though, is the compartmentalization of the shot placement types. Yours is great, much better than most. I take (human) X-rays and CT for a living, and have some background in vertebrate anatomy and comparative anatomy as well. If you look at transvse sectional anatomy, for instance, one will quickly understand that a "heart shot" can include nothing but heart and lower lungs, OR it might include both lungs, the heart, liver, stomach, and one or both upper loops of the large bowel. So, just because you hit some guts doesn't mean you didn't hit anything good. Hits "too far back", but angled forward might still hit both lungs, lots of liver, and great vessels. I wish I could lay hands on some veterinarian CT's to illustrate this concept better. In my hunting career, I have only seen two gut shots that did not include anything else. Likewise, even shooting a deer smack in the ass and not hitting the major arteries produces enough bleeding to kill in just a few minutes to half an hour IF you get enough penetration in big muscle. Smaller arteries can add up. There is a phenomenon called DIC (diffuse intravascular coagulopathy), where enough bleeding over time can cause systemic clotting in all the peripheral small vessels, and seizes up the whole circulatory system. That is different from bleeding out. Few people even know that. My major point being, that knowing what you did is really important to knowing what to do NEXT, as you have said.

After the shot when you finish beer number 9, its time to fall out of your stand and crawl towards which way you think you parked the truck. Remember to talk to imaginary people as you crawl along, yelling "You dont know me. I'm charming!" Eventually you fall into a drunken slumber on the woodland floor and sleep for 8-10 hours. When you awake you can now start searching for your deer, if you even remember you shot one. Man I love a great hunt!

It's funny how hunting has become a rich mans sport in recent times. Despite it being fairly easy to acquire the animal and weapons to hunt them with, storing all the meat requires an entire freezer alone to just meat. This means one of two things, you either own a house which is an impossible feet for a younger person such as myself or you consume half the bedroom with the massive steel box. 😂 The latter is probably going to become the reality because (good) tasting protein is starting to become expensive.

Last season I killed a large doe early in the season, she dressed out at close to 160 lbs. I hit her center chest as she faced me, with a 130 grain core lock 270 Winchester at about 180 yards. I watched her jump and run first one direction then turn around and leave in the opposite direction before she disappeared into the woods. I waited several minutes before walking down and finding blood then I went back to my vehicle to retrieve a blood light, I ran into two friends who heard the shot and offered to help find the deer. At about the 1 hour mark from the shot we began trying to track the deer, I set a walking app on my phone at the first blood drops. The deer left a good amount of blood even stopping to rest and leave a massive amount in spots. In the end she ran 801 yards jumping two fences in the process. When we butchered the deer I looked at her heart, the 270 bullet had passed between the lungs and nicked the upper heart, tore a wound in her liver and guts before stopping in her spine. 801 yards…. The longest I’ve ever seen a wounded deer run. I don’t think I will e take the same shot again.

The aorta, especially in the aortic arch, or through the pulmonary vessel's trunks, is as good or better than the heart. Zero blood pressure in a few heartbeats. That's why I like to crowd the shoulder, and use an arrow system up for the job. Not even all double lung hits are created equal.

@@petethelegend He said in the video that it can even take up to 24 hours for the animal to die. And what if you don't hit the lungs or the heart? The animal can most definetly bleed out slowly over hours and hours. You can just guarantee a SIGNIFICANTLY cleaner and faster kill. Also use a supressor if you don't wanna scare the animals. WELL IF you watch that deer till it is grazing and aim for the spot its head will be in next time it goes for a bite, and shoot the deer in the dome. and you are shooting legal be it airgun or powder burner, the deer should just fall over right there and you can walk right up to it then and there. course if you miss the deer will get away. but why just harm a deer. a clean one shot kill is about as ethical as it gets THE LAST WORD sorry i just air gun hunt, and usually with a .357 or heavier doing over 300fpe and i understand the trials of bow hunting, that is why i dont do it. yall have fun. i would rather the deer be DRT so a 150gr hollowpoint going around 950fps will deffinitly do the job, so will a 300gr .510cal doing 750fps,. but that deer might dodge that one. the projectiles have the same energy relatively, but the speed of the .357 will make the deer fall faster. with less worries. aea big bore .357 with side leaver has a 10 shot mag and even unregulated at a 4000psi fill will give you 10 shots that will all end that deer right there with a head or heart shot.

I usually wait 1 full day before I retrieve it to decide if I want it. If I do, that's great because the intestines had time to marinate in the meat a bit before I gut it. It's an acquired taste, so don't judge me.

Disgusting hunter, you shouldn't "wait and see if I want to kill it or not", if you shoot it you are responsible for killing it. Do it right or let it be

I think this helps me understand alittle bit better what happened to me this season. I started bow hunting when i was 12 but it was on and off however I never got a deer, until this year. I finally shot a big doe. I heard the thwack watched her run and to my worst nightmare jumped onto the neighboring property. It was darker blood but had a few bubbles. So liver and at least one lung. She didnt mule kick just flinched and RAN. She was dumping blood i mean dumping. Sadly we tracked for hours and the trail just stopped. I only had premission to look that night so i never recovered her. I was so disappointed and hayed leaving her lay where ever she was.. I will Definitely going to wait longer next time that happens but the good news is I tagged out the following night with 20 mins of legal light to spare. It was a smaller doe but it filled my tag and freezer. She is hanging on my wall now since she was my first. Thanks for the great video it Definitely helped me figure out where my arrow hit

You didn't answer "How long should you wait." At least not good standard. Except for a gut shot, which is on you, you wait 20 minutes to a half an hour. I don't know where you live, but rain and weather will destroy the trail if you wait overnight.

Yeah, nah. Having an animal run around with a arrow, slowly and painfully dying over many hours for your recreation? I have no problem with hunting, but this is just unnecessary suffering inflicted only for pleasure.

All of this should be incredibly helpful. Adrenaline is a helluva drug so learn to use it wisely. One thing I would add, just a pet peeve... dont be like the guys that celebrate too early. Wait, breath, track, confirm dead, then celebrate.

No one in my immediate family hunts, I’ll be going for the first time this year with a buddy. This is really helpful information and I love the artwork that goes along with it!

I shot a pig with an arrow this year. It looked like a great hit, the arrow hit the ribs and passed through. He ran into the bush and we waited 30 minutes. Found the blood trail, but it turned out that my shot missed lungs and liver and just nicked the stomach [we didn't know that until we cleaned him out later]. The recovery took 4 hours of tracking through the bush and we could see several beds where he spent some time and we pushed him from those beds. Ultimately, we found him sleeping in a wallow and we were able to put him down. I saw lots of blood on the arrow, but I did not take note of the type of blood there. This video will be very useful in the future for both deer and pigs.

What if you aim for the neck? ....... you risk no injury to the deer. It's dead or alive, right?!?

Common', you shoot a deer in the intestions or a**, that's going to be nasty. You wait 10 hours the meat will be contaminated.

I don't understand, if you shoot a deer in the gut, and you see it bed down, why wouldn't you just shoot it again? (hopefully in the heart this time)

When my dad would shoot a deer and let it run off. He would go home and eat a sandwich and then go back and find it
