You want to talk about prices adding up? Let's talk about that $15 a month extra you now got to pay to your insurance company. Years ago I had a girlfriend in her 20s who bought herself a new Corvette. She wanted me to use my life savings to buy a house for us while she used hers on the Corvette. I told her that was unfair and not good stewardship. She really wanted to marry me and she was very pushy about it even though I had never proposed. I cancelled her wedding plans and got on with my life I was heartbroken but better off. I later found out she actually had bought. herself an engagement ring right after I broke up with her! I felt like I had dodged a bullet. That Corvette had saved me from marrying a spendthrift woman. Now I use the story of that Corvette in the Financial Peace classes that I teach at my church.

If you're daily commute is less than 20mi each way, buy a cheap second hand econo car and rent on the weekends when you go out on long trips. No sense having a truck that drinks gas and remains parked 22 out of the 24 hours in a day. Not only the installment payments but the insurance and maintenance you have to factor it just evaporating as your car sits.

What blows my mind is how people NEED to have a car payment. Like as soon as one car is paid off, they want to start making payments again because the extra money in their account at the end of the month is scary to them. Just take care of the car you have! If you wash your car every two weeks, get it detailed two to four times a year, and don’t clutter it with fast food wrappers, it will look good to 95% of people out there.

What is Dave’s opinion on having vehicles and a camper? I have the same things as this caller, a truck (bought used), my wife’s pilot (bought new and will have for 10 years, currently on year 4 with it) and a camper (bought used). I paid cash for the truck and camper and half down on my wife’s pilot at time of purchase. The pilot is now paid off. I assume Dave’s point of view is it okay to have these things and being in debt over them is the issue.

Yes, one issue is the debt. The other issue is the ratio of how much of the car (almost always a depreciating asset) is of your net worth and annual income. The rule of thumb is the total value of everything with a motor should not be more than 50% of your annual income.

This is true. If you manage to be successful and earn a good living with savings and investments, there's nothing wrong with having something nice and new as long as you're smart about it and not have a negative impact on your income. Like you said you have to live your life because you can't take this stuff with you. But I never like the money pit that are the German Badged cars. I consider those bad investments because of the up-sell on basic maintenance costs. I have 2 fully loaded 2017 and 2018 Hyundai vehicles. Santa Fe XL Limited and Sonata Limited. People are very surprised how nice they are and full of tech and features when they get my cars. Yet, What I paid for them would still equal to less than the cost of 1 Base model German Luxury car. My maintenance costs are just over $50 for an oil change service and barely over $100 bucks for anything else like brakes. Everything else is covered by the amazing warranties. Just be smart when you buy new. Like at the full service costs as well.

I also told them that the only way I’d be impressed by a nicer vehicle is if it took them somewhere nicer then here (my work) because how would driving a nicer vehicle to the same place making the same amount impress me? Even if my Jeep breaks down and costs 1000 or 2000 to fix.... that’s still only 3-4 car payments for them so I still pay less for 8-9 months Of that year. I’ll never buy new again.
