I have grown Roselle in years past! I only recommend planting what you need and being prepared to make sure that no seed pods fall into the mulch or ground around the girth growing area of the plant, otherwise the flower pods with seeds in them will become volunteers growing everywhere the next spring! I didn't know this about them, but learned the hard way! Another thing they get real tall (7-11 ft. tall here in Florida) and wide and the stalks can be almost like that of a tree with long big taproots, which can be a booger to dig out at end of season, after they die back from the first frost! However if you can stay on top of the care of them, by collecting every Flower you can prevent them from becoming a weed!

I planted mine in a ditch on the railroad rite of way! I spray the ditch myself, so the railroad leaves it alone. They aren't quite as "careful" as I am! I grow my garden right to the edge of the rite of way, and they seem to respect it for the most part.

Zone 5b roselle/hibiscus grower here. I can't not grow it I love the calyces and leaves so much. Teas, cooking, wine, desserts, preserves, dye and even fiber. It does just about everything. Not to mention being incredibly healthy for you. Three things I do that allow me to get a worthwhile crop of calyces. 1. Start early and pot up. 2. I've been selectively saving seeds of plants that flower first for a number of years now. 3. In more recent years I've been experimenting with covering my hibiscus beds with blackout plastic to simulate shorter days earlier in the season. I'm still experimenting with the exact timing on this, but so far it does seem to be increasing my calyx yield that I can attain in my zone. Obviously it's not the same kind of yield you would get in more southern zones but it's enough so far to make it worthwhile for me. And I'm hoping in years to come I will only improve. Hope this helps someone. Love the channel.
@bobbun9630
3 жыл бұрын
I'm curious how you're handling the plastic. This is my first year growing roselle. Here's what I sort of have planned (you can probably tell I have thought about this in some detail): - Plant an extra plant or two as "controls" to see what happens when I don't do anything. - Plant something tall like corn or sunflowers to the west of my roselle so that late in the season shade is cast on the plants in the afternoon. This is not to stimulate flowering--it's to keep the plants from overheating under the plastic. - Keep the plants pruned to under 5' through the season so that I can set up hoops to hold a cover later. - Starting 8/1 to 8/15, start covering the plants around 6pm, uncovering after dark before I go to bed for the night. - If the controls start to flower, then no more need to cover, otherwise continue until around 9/30. I usually get frost around 10/15, though temps are hot well into September. My plants have been going for around six weeks now in 4" pots and are ready to go in the ground as soon as I get some space cleared.

Hi sorry for the delayed response. I saw your comment this morning but it's a busy time of year, just haven't had time or energy to sit down and write out a useful response. I will get back to you as it excites me to see others excited about growing roselle. And I wanted to say something so I'm not just leaving you hanging. And congrats on giving roselle a try. Your plan looks like a great start depending on where you are. I do have some things to say that I think will be helpful for you to know. So I apologize for the delay I will try to get back in the next day or two. I like that you're thinking about why you're doing certain things. In the meantime one thing to remember is that pretty much the worst case scenario is you get lots of nutritious and delicious leaves, which I use in cooking all the time. And remember the leaves can be dried and stored for use in winter as well. Works great in soups and I have noticed it helps a lot when I have digestive problems (I think this is a common trait of the mallow family). I will get back soon. Happy gardening.

I love the show I had caught every single one up til then. This was a great topic I am growing them this year. Well I started the seeds, but then a ridiculous cold front came through here in Michigan and killed my seedlings in the greenhouse so now I got to start over but I think I should still be able to plant seeds and get some flowers out of them this year loved the instructions it’s very helpful. "You're looking a little wormy. Here, drink this!" is not how you say "Thank you" for some nice homebrew wine. It's worth mentioning, I think, that zone and heat are not really equivalent. USDA zones are all about minimum winter temperatures. I'm on the border of 6b/7a, but I can count on 85-100 on nearly every sunny day from mid-June to mid-September. There will be plenty of days when the overnight low doesn't drop below 85. That should be plenty of heat for roselle, but I do worry about the day length and I plan on situating and pruning some of my plants so I have the option of putting some hoops and a tarp over them in the evenings as summer begins to wane. If the plants not in that situation start flowering, I'll skip the extra work. I tried a couple of leaves from my roselle seedlings. Mature plants may have a different taste, but I would describe them as "tart cucumber spinach" flavor. The wood chipper will make short work of those stalks.

I wonder if I could grow Roselle here in zone 6b. Average last frost is April 14 (ranges from late March to early May) and average first frost is Nov 10 (ranges from late Oct to late Nov). That's technically 220 days frost free on average. However, the warm season when nights are typically in the 50s or 60s is only about 4 months (June-Sept). Prior to mid-May, and after mid-October, I'll have very little weather above 60F, and a lot of weather in the 30s-40s.

It is October 27, 2022 when I wrote this message in hope you will see it on this roselle promotion video. I'm still waiting for the wine recipe that Sheila was supposed to share in a video this year but I can't find that video on your channel list of videos. Can you give that link please?

This is the recipe that I used, just did it for 6 gallons. I did not get to make any last year as frost got my plants before mature. Hence, the reason for no video. Fingers crossed, I will get a harvest and be able to make some this year. northeastwinemaking.com/pages/hibiscus-flower-wine

Can you show us your Roselle seedlings when they are ready to go in the ground? Mine are just beginning to get true leaves, barely peeking out, but the roots are growing out of the bottoms of the large trays like you are using. Thanks
