If no one else says, man I REALLY appreciate this in-depth behind the scenes because it really teaches small productions another way of approaching accomplishing a vision. We all pretty much shoot solo, but with a team, its easier and feels much more professional. The artist is at ease, the director is at ease, and the crew is at ease. Everyone does their job and goes home happy to know that you all accomplished what you set out to do. Big salute to you and everything you give to us.

Im actually amazed that you were able to do something of this magnitude only giving the producer $5000 to work with in LA. You paid his fee, makeup, art, models, car rental and studio rental... Your dude is a wizard and must be crazy connected. Keep him on your speed dial. Y'all did an amazing job for this project and i think you made some very smart decisions regarding what to do with that budget. Thank you for this video. It was. A very valuable lesson in the difference a good producer can make on set.

This video was mind blowing brother. It's good to hear how you cut your own pay back just to make sure that your client got the best look possible. I know that sometimes your personal profit margin is based off of your own resources and you took what you knew and outsourced what you didn't know. I really love your content man. Please make more videos showcasing the business side of the industry. A lot of us want to know how you prospect/qualify clients, how you follow up with them and how you get to where you can work on a $10k video shoot. That's one of my goals for next year and I'd love to catch your perspective.

I shot many music videos this year off my own budget and I can tell you, for the artist, the $ investment can be insane. Venue is usually the greatest cost along with travel and lodging. Finding the talent in new cities can be a challenge. But the worst part is everyone trying to milk the budget and ask for crazy amounts just because someone seems to have money. My advice for filmmakers trying to secure more business and deals is to set a flat rate (regardless of someone’s status in life) or a system which increases rate by a scale based on the amount of exposure. Because there is nothing worse than changing your fee just because someone seems affluent but you deliver the same product. That’s like a girl making you work extra hard to get a date with her but then goes to another guy and throws herself at him on site. Not ragging on you, you actually did it fairly. These were my lessons in coordinating video as a producer and artist. Im glad you secured that deal. For everyone else reading however, anything over $5k is serious money. So treat it accordingly. It’s so easy to burn a bridge without knowing and wondering why you never got hired back. And most the time the money is coming out of the artists pocket, not a banks pocket, so it intensifies the investment. If you really want to stand out, creative video fx are the new wave. Where are you from?

Great video man, LA is losing when it comes to the film industry. Guy shooting narratives on GH4 & GH5'S with low to no budget are being asked for permits. This is crazy and also the reason the industry has moved to Atlanta. BTW, you did not include post production editing which should be a crucial part of the budget.

Subbed and liked! I’ve done a few rap videos myself and it isn’t the primary choice because of all the planning and editing that goes into it. Unknown you should do some research. Look on the web. Why do u need a budget camera? Is it for shooting pictures like portraits or for video recording. You can get an entry level dslr under $500-$1200. Get the best you can afford, is what I would suggest if your on a budget. Also know the reasons to why you want a budget camera, and look for cameras that can give you the features you need. They have DX crop sensors and FX full frame sensors. Some have the ability to take pictures and record video in low light situations. You have to do some research and find the best one that suits your needs.

I definitely would have thought it would cost more than $10k. Did you edit the video too? I feel like you didn't pay yourself enough.

I understand what you going through with the process making video or film project. I am going through the same boat. Thank you for making the behind the scene. You have done an amazing job for this project and you are right about building a relationship with your connection and don't burn bridges with the ones who help you out. And including budgeting and Video set planning which is very important. It is a team effort doing a film. Thank God that I've take the time to see your topic or thumbnail where I randomly check out your video. I would like to see in the future that if we can work together.

Los Angeles is notorious for permits, doesn't matter where you're filming. Glad they cut you a break and didn't shut it done! Great informative video.

My friend...Your day rate is way too low! I'm really surprised that you pulled that off for 10k!

What's Up...I mean at first the budget did surprise but once I seen all those lights and other added props that were made for the shoot it didn't surprise me. Even though you didn't get all the shots you wanted this looks hella dope man can't wait to see full video. Those lights on the washer machine was a cool idea and just the shots you showed that you did capture looked like conveyed the story well. #teamwork

Awesome in debt behind the scenes from beginning to end. A lot of information in detail. Is definitely cool that you shared the budget, what was even more incredible is that the artist definitely stepped up and give you feedback most artists don't do that. I also agree those tube lights were incredible, this is another example on how you can do a lot with crops once you light them up. That's one big reason why a lot of people don't get phenomenal shots or even interesting Concepts it's because they don't think out of the box. I build a chroma key video room setup in my basement, the problem I'm always having is that my ceiling is too low so therefore my overhead lighting is always a big issue. But after watching this I was approaching it all wrong I could have thought about less chroma key and more of a visual setup with props and furniture to utilize the space even more. This video is very motivational great job YC
