I worked at a grocery store for years as a manager. I would get in trouble for NOT throwing way the fruit and vegetables when they were not perfect looking. I would mark some of it down and it would sell fast! But I also had a group of customers that knew to come in at night and I would give them the bakery items that were going out of date soon and anything else slated for throwaway that night.

You would think they would donate to a homeless community place or put them in a bin in the store and advertise as nearly out of date and let people buy them say for 25cents or 50 cents an item, the store still gets money and they show less in loss products and the people who are living on a very tight budget buys these and have a better variety in foods to eat. Absolutely. We have a farm. The animals on our farm eat better than what we do, if you consider we buy their food. Usually we sell the bull calves and butch 1 heifer a year. With our rabbits, we butcher the bucks and keep the does and the same with the sheep. Bird products are not used in our household due to several allergies in our family. Our garden is big enough to give extras away at the churches in town. We have even offered a calf a year to the food pantry in town. With all of the food that is thrown away, it pains me to see this.

Here's a great recipe for Sticky Hoisin Roasted Chicken Wings from Sam Tan's Kitchen. Serves... 4-6? Depends how many wings each person wants :) Cut 2 lbs chicken wings into two parts, separating at the joints between the drummets and the wings. Coat each piece well and refrigerate overnight with: 4 tbsp hoisin sauce (Lee Kum Kee or Koon Chun) 2 tbsp light soy sauce 2 tbsp Shaoxing cooking rice wine (or dry sherry) When ready to cook, arrange the pieces on a baking tray lined with foil and baste with marinade. Drizzle generously with lots of honey. Roast at about 350 for about 25 mins until a nice caramelized reddish brown. Flip wings over, glaze again with lots of honey and any leftover marinade and continue roasting until golden and sticky. *If your wings are cooked but look too pale for your liking, drizzle with honey and place it on the top rack of your oven under the grill/broil function for a few mins until it bubbles and turns deep red. This is a quick cheat to get the honey to caramelize faster.

@@amandamiranda9453 so what are your thoughts regarding taking meat from the dumpster that was (as your example was) room temp in the store due to a broken cooler and then refreezing or becoming cold again out in the dumpsters? That's my biggest scare. 1) why is the meat being thrown out? 2) was it thawed out and left on a shelf and then thrown out? 3) thawing/freezing/thawing/freezing can't be good for meat? 4) recalled? Thanks!
@amandamiranda9453
5 жыл бұрын
April MacDonald I’d say just use your judgement with meat, smell it once you open it is going to be the best give away if it’s spoiled. It really depends as to how long it was left at room temp. If I were to find say chicken, id go home open it cook it then freeze that way you can taste smell it first then if it’s fine to freeze. We also use a donations system at work so if anything is able to be donated then it goes in the freezer for a food bank to later pick up if our meat goes in the dumpster it’s because a cooler was down for more than 8 hours. If you’re worried about recalls you can always look it up online. Again I can only speak to my job but if something is recalled there’s a protocol in place and we have to send it back to the warehouse for them to safely dispose of bc if it’s recalled and we put it in our dumpster we can get in trouble. Hope this helps:)
@donnakuester2212
5 жыл бұрын
I wonder if there was a recall on the lot number. It is only located on the box not the individual bags of beef. We have to store our ground beef tubes in its original box with lot number in case of an ecoli recall and then we have to save the lot tag to get a refund and throw the 10 lbs tubes in the dumpster. Is there anyone to check if the meat is on a recall list without the box lot numbers? Chicken and beef are both recalled pretty often. I would be leery of eating it without being able to check first.

WOW. Your weekly grocery bill is probably non existent. Well done for what you do. I'm not sure to what extend New Zealand supermarkets throw food away. Never thought to do such a thing though. I say - keep going.

Thank you! You're so right, recently all of my food has come from dumpster diving. I know that America is definitely the most wasteful, but you never know!

Do you preserve food by canning? All that chicken and beef can be pressure canned very easily with the correct tools.

At the time of this video I had never canned before, but I definitely do now and it is so convenient! One of my most recent videos is about canning some of my finds

It's beef brisket it's very good when you wrap it and barbecue it for hours I cannot believe that all that ended up in the dumpster and the poor cows that were killed for that thank goodness your family will benefit from this

Completely insane how wasteful that company is! Should be required to donate food near exipration dates instead of wasting it like that. How shameful.

Not sure if that's beef or pork. Would have to see it more close up. Worse case scenario you can go to the dollar store and get a cheap frame to get the glass out of for the frame you found. That's a good little haul you got.

Stores don't donate much anymore because of fear getting sued. I used to work at a warehouse and a guy got electrocuted buy a drop light he was using on a boat. They recalled them all and I spent a few hours having to cut the cords off all of them before they went in the trash.

So ridiculous that grocery stores don't make the effort to donate this food!!! There are food pantries and shelters everywhere that would really appreciate this food! There are many families that don't receive food stamps, and there are children that go to bed hungry!! There are hungry people in America, and stores throw good food away!

How do you know if that meat 🥩 is safe to eat, it’s sad that places just throw away food when it’s shelters in Michigan that need food,

Just have to use common sense and sight, smell and taste. So far they look and feel fine, but if when I open them they have a bad smell, unfortunately they will have to be garbage again

This makes me so mad. Families are starving and living on food stamps that don’t last and they are throwing away good food. Makes no sense to me. Why can’t they donate it
