Young African baristas are leading a movement to get the barista profession recognised and accepted as a highly skilled job and craft that can help improve value addition and coffee consumption in-country. This makes it a valuable asset for African countries and their economies and a new career path for young Africans interested in coffee. In November, the first regional Youth African Barista Championship took place in Togo, organized by the Inter-African Coffee Organization (IACO) - a milestone.
Young baristas from across the "ACP Business-friendly: Supporting value chains through inclusive policies, investment promotion and alliances" programme funded by the European Union and the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States participated under the micro level activities led by the International Trade Centre's Alliances for Action. The winner of the competition was Kennedy Owino from Kenya. They learned important tips from Kenyan World Barista Champion Martin Shabaya, an inspiration for many of them. Here are the highlights.
