This is the second read through an etude on “Young and Foolish” written by Ed Saindon from his book “50 Etudes for the Jazz Vibist” we recently published. The first read was fresher, but there are less clams in this one. I love the texture, voicings, inner lines, how it uses the whole range of the instrument. If you want to help me improve this etude, get the book and practice. 😊

Etude 30: Young and Foolish
This etude features the melody of a beautiful ballad and was designed for working on solo playing concepts; including the use of interesting voicings, double stops in the melody, inner line movement and various dampening techniques.
It is important for the vibist to have a number of concepts and techniques to draw from when playing solo vibraphone in order to keep the performance from getting monotonous.
Additionally, playing a ballad such as this in the jazz style necessitates that the harmony be expressed with rich voicings, as opposed to just basic, colorless chords.
As you are going through the etude, I suggest taking the time to identify and analyze the concepts, techniques and specific voicings being applied.
Needless to say, it is essential for the vibist to follow through and apply these concepts, techniques and voicings on other songs.
