This movie was only one of two instances where I actually fell out of my chair in convulsions on the floor, helpless with laughter the first time I saw it (the other time was the first time I saw the "Don't mention the war" scene in Fawlty Towers, when John Cleese started goose-stepping in front of the Germans).

I saw this back in the 70’s with my cousin and uncle. Uncle was laughing so hard, but my cousin and I were terrified. I guess we did not get the humor.

The way Cloris Leachman moves in this scene--just suddenly switching from one position to another, with swift, truncated transitions--almost makes this scene look like an old silent movie with fewer fps. Such cunning work.

Still one of the funniest movies ever made in history. This one, and Blazing Saddles. You literally can't stop watching either one no matter how many times they come on. Gene Wilder was absolutely great in both of them!

I still quote Igor's "walk this way" and sometimes folks get the joke and alas sometimes they don't, so I have to explain it to them. As for Blazing Saddles, well, when my parents went to see it, then ended up going back another day because they (and the rest of the audience) had been laughing so hard, they missed a bunch of the jokes. The good thing about that was they took me too. Let me add HOTW, Part 1, Monty Python & the holy grail to the list of funniest movies ever made. I think if one was to watch all 4 movies in a row in 1 day you'd have to go to the hospital because your sides would be hurting so much from laughing for so long.

I went to see this movie when it came out in early 70’s. It was the first genuine laugh out loud movie I’d ever seen 🤣🤣🤣 I ended up buying it on VHS 👍

I was 21 when this movie came out. My best friend and I were going out to a club but want to kill sometime. It was also my birthday and I got high for the first-time. So we went to the movies and picked this one because it was just starting. I could not believe how bloody funny this movie was. The entire audience were laughing out loud. It was a great memory of a very happy time. Life was certainly more peaceful then. Thank you m else for the laughter.

Peter Boyle would come on the set on his days off because it was so much fun. Mel Brooks was a genius to write this, to bring this cast together and to film it in black and white.
