I think it's beautiful that there is an effort to promote Korean Buddhism in this way. It's so integral to maintain your roots to your culture and past.

What a great idea! The monk is so right that Korean society is too harsh for young people. It's no wonder the birth rate is so low.The society needs to soften to make room for their needs.

In recent surveys 1 in 4 Korean women doesn't want to get married and half of the married couples don't want children. The situation is getting difficult. I hope South Korea overcome this problem.

Ironic because it's young Koreans' lack of faith in God for why they are not having children. They don't think God can provide them an increase in finances and blessing, so they choose to not have children. Buddhism doesn't worship a god. It's the belief that "if it's to be, it's up to me." If you live a great and moral life, you may be reincarnated as a butterfly that gets caught or squashed. If you believe in a savior in Jesus through a salvation religion, not on your works, but in God's grace, there would be less marriages in wedding halls and more marriages in churches in Korea. There would also be a higher birthrate in Korea. If a society believes it is up to them to find their love, provide all their resources by themselves, and figure out life by themselves as if they created themselves, they will always have the issues that the young generations of the world face today. We've made Christmas secular and the world has lost its faith. The birthrate was higher during the post-Korean War era than it is now because faith was alive.

FIrst of all, Korea is not just Buddhist traditionally. Korea has at least 3 native faiths that coexist: Mu'ism, Buddhism, and Confucianism. To really understand the concept of "god(s)" is Korea, you have to look at all these because a Buddhist in Korea is probably also a Mu'ist, and Confucianist to some extent. And each of these has their own metaphysics. Buddhism primarily tells people how to live, Confucianism tells people how to die, and Mu'ism addresses the need to mediate the spirit world here and now (this is greatly simplified). Since Buddhism comes from Hinduism, it has all the same deities. In fact, if you enter a temple in Korea is very likely you passed by 4 of them: Vaishravana, Dhritarashtra, Virudhaka, Virupaksha. I think the problem is that Hinduism and Buddhism are very sophisticated faiths with cycles within cylces of complexity. A protestant Christian believes they have to learn all they can and spend every weekend being lectured about one book (and really just half of that book is theirs, the New Testament). But Buddhism (and Hinduism) have rooms full of volumes of books. No person could read them all. And in general the worshipper isn't expected to. These faiths believe in reincarnation, and 99.9999999% of you will be reincarnated. Very few will reach nirvana or the end of the cylce. The goal is simply to be a good person and increase your chances of building karma. (I'm obviously over simplifying a very complex topic. But the point is, they have deities, but its complicated). We see a decline in birthrates in all advanced societies. If anything, I think the cause is likely to be the lack of status we give to parents and parenting in modern society. Everything is a commodity in our society and we place values on things based on this alone. There is no social value to parenting and there are endless messages telling young people to not have children when they grow up. They are told to "get an education, get a job, buy things, etc" If the Korean government came out and said that all government jobs would be influenced heavily (points system) by how many kids you have, you'd quickly see things change in Korea. The government could force banks to favor loans to businesses that manged promotions in a similar manner. This would be fair as having kids would just put you ahead of a similarly qualified candidate with no kids. Simple. Status is huge in Korean culture. And so you'd see things change pretty fast. Two kids = a masters college degree. Done! The real issue is that Korean leaders are not willing to act. And they seem to be heavily influenced by foreign ideas and they have abandoned their people to these foreign ideas. Korea has leaders like President Yoon who has NO children. What kind of message does that send!? How could a political party be allowed to advance someone without kids? A leader who has no children has a very hard time thinking about generations to come the SAME way a person with children does. Its not the same. And we see how terrible President Yoon is doing. He puts international relations ahead of the Korean people all the time. Everything he does is to make him feel popular with the US ruling elite and European ruling elite. He isn't thinking about Korean generations to come.

@@michaelashby9654 TLDR: "If you look at the world, you'll be distressed. If you look within, you'll be depressed. But if you look at Christ, you'll be at rest." You are over complicating it, and conflating status with faith. In fact the only thing that matters is where you end up after this life is over because we will spend far more time in life after death than life here on on Earth. To give purpose to people in life here on Earth, first you need to realize why you are created. To figure out why you are created, you need to consult the owner's manual (God's word - faith through the one true God). We didn't create ourselves, so how can we understand our purpose? By reading the manual (God's word - yes Protestants and all Christians believe in the Old Testament or Torah). People have an innate instinct to worship. We will worship something. Whether it is a celebrity, a sports team, an addiction, our jobs, social media, friends, or God. Everyone will worship something. Only one of those will give people purpose to pass their beliefs down to their offspring. When a society's people have lost faith, they have lost their purpose to live, to pro-create, and to pass their genes on. If you give them a religion where you tell them to be a good person and it is up to themselves to determine how they will end up in the afterlife, and you don't explain what they will be re-incarnated into, most people won't find their purpose of life in that. Politicians are not idols to be looked up to. Nobody will look at the president and think they will model their life decisions after them. In most nations with a growing Christian faith, such as in Africa and in latin America, the birthrate is going strong because people have found purpose through faith in creating offspring, not a decision based on if they can afford to. They see childbearing as a duty and obligation as God's people following God's word and trusting in Him. Young Koreans site most frequently that economic reasons are why they are not having children, or their worry about the possibility of being able to have children. They are more well off than those from Africa and Latin America. They just choose to focus on status and the world than on Heaven and servitude. Jesus came ro serve and He washed his disciples' feet. Jesus said in Heaven the highest status is a servant. To get to Heaven, your works and your money will not get you there. Only by accepting Jesus. That's salvation through grace. Unlike confuscionism and Buddhism, your good works will not save you. The price has already been paid. Now that's good news. Yet people are too busy to accept it. The US has sent the most missionaries into the world. South Korea has sent the second most missionaries. Yet we have neglected our own countries and passing down our faith to the next generation and keeping them armed with the truth. The societies with the most decline in faith from one generation to the next are America and Korea. Two societies where the youth have a pessimistic outlook on the future and a lack of faith. Jesus' salvation is a free gift and brings you peace, yet so many choose not to have faith. The devil doesn't care if you do good. He will let people do good if that means they will make themselves busy. Most youth, but especially in Korea, are so concerned with being busy that they don't dedicate time to faith. They give God their left overs instead of making Him center of every area of their lives. Jesus said to take up His yoke and He will give us rest. For his yoke is easy and his burden is light. It's a spiritual renewal to accept Jesus. It has been shown that those who give the first 10% of their income to God say they feel blessed. Those who don't state they believe they couldn't afford to. If you believe you can't afford to give to God, so goes your faith and if you believe you can't afford to have children, you will never have enough to have children. If you have faith that God will provide a way even though you don't see a way, that is called faith. That's how it is for everything in life. Finding love, your finances, your relationships, your career, your health, your safety, your happiness, your freedom, and your soul. If you can believe that God has the best for you and He wants to give you the best because He is a loving Father, even though you can't see it, if you believe, that is called faith. If you look at the world, or yourself, you will not have faith and have despair.

Okay that's very sad that politicians don't care about their own people when actually their job is to represent their interests not their own personal agenda. I believe young people need more stability, like better jobs and benefits that help you raise children. When society is friendly to parents and jobs opportunities are offered to mothers or single mothers, people won't be so afraid to take risks because they know there is a way to survive even if your marriage fails and you have no family support. In Asia women are very dependent on their partners after marriage and that alone leads to people to not divorce and live together in abusive, unhealthy relationships, which sometimes leads to killing infants. It's a very harsh society indeed but there are definitely ways to help the young generation.

@@menervazeita There is no perfect society. Everything is a trade off. When everyone works, the family suffers, children suffer. I have raised children and its so obvious that having a mother at home is great comfort to them. Just because there was some bad people who did something doesn't mean you throw the baby out with the bathwater. There will always be abusive people. We shouldn't destroy the family because of some bad people.

@michaelashby9654 of course it's great comfort but nowadays we can't afford such luxury. One salary does not cover the loving costs and we both are working. I know very well how that feels when you bring your kid first in the kindergarten and pick it up the last one.
