Half truth they taught you...The urge is there - it's how you deal with that urge... I can not tell you how many times I've landed in that river and wanted to breathe underwater - but you don't! I also scuba dive, in Ice, in winter, and the same reflexes your body gives are almost overwhelming. But you do not do what you know will at the very least create a life threatening situation. Like fear, auto reflex is controllable but learned.
@htmc2022

@@stever2583 yes, but this poor, young man was not a swimmer so he had no experience with training himself to hold his breath, no matter what. Please don’t mislead people into thinking this activity is not extremely dangerous. You can push your boundaries all you want but some day you may not be able to hold your breath long enough to get up to the water’s surface in time to take a breath - so don’t push your suicidal impulses on others. Err on the side of caution. Adventure is great, but not when it takes your life. Plus, Scuba diving with a mouthpiece to breathe into is NOT to be equated with diving into unknown waters with no equipment at all. This poor young man gave into peer pressure and it cost him his life. Wish he had been more self-protective and told his bullying so-called “friends” to take a hike! As far as I’m concerned they caused his death and the family should push for charges. Plus they should sue whatever group has strung that dangerous bridge across the valley. It is an “attractive nuisance” which has caused enough “accidental” deaths. The police said ~20 people have died jumping off that bridge. At what point do they shut it down? Local gov’ts should be sued by the families of those 20 people! It may help prevent more senseless deaths.

@@stever2583 It depends on the weather and humidity. When in a heatwave, going instantly from the heated air into a very cold water would shock some people's system. Their dilated blood vessels will instantly constrict, they might experience sudden increase in blood pressure, headache, dizziness, disorientation while in the cold water. To prevent this, always acclimate the body to the water temperature by slowly soaking in it for even as short as a minute. Diving straight into cold water from a hot humid weather in the first dip can shock the body.

Lifelong cliff jumper here- 52 now. Jumping off the cliff is easy. When you hit the water you go down, deep. You cant see much as the water is BLACK. You need to understand how to detect which way is UP and then sprint to the surface using your swimming knowledge. You start out on small cliffs maybe 10 feet up working your way up to 40 or so. Never jump higher than 60 feet as you start to risk death after that unless you know exactly how to land.
