#1 reason is because we cant afford ANYTHING let alone a luxury as large as a motorcycle.

Affordability was what got my wife and I, as a young couple in college, into motorcycles back ~1980. We bought a used CB750 and circumvented the USA and Canada on that thing. We were definitely not ATGATT, we’re camping 99% of the time, and the gas cost a fraction of what it would have been otherwise - it was the only way we could have made such an excursion. And all that driven by a desire to explore, to see, to go. The economics are still there, but the desire to travel and explore, experience new things, not so sure it is the same today.

" The economics are still there" Oh are they ?

@@SledTillDead Yes, yes they are. You can buy a used motorcycle for same inflation adjusted dollars I spent on my 10 year old CB760 in 1980. A bike that will take you across the country and back, run better, more reliably and get better gas mileage than my old CB. Just talked to a nephew yesterday looking to buy a bike for exactly that (economic) reason. My son got into riding a few years ago for same - commutes daily on his used Vstrom that he bought for a few thou. If you are basing affordability on a new BMW - yeah. And I own one now - but back in the day I wanted a Goldwing but could only afford a used 750, so that's what I did and same deal is there today. But better bikes. I don't think economics are main reason younger people are not riding today.

I bought my first bike in 1976. Today there are so many more forms of amusement that did not exist in 1976. If I'd had Internet, social media, video games and whatnot back then would I have gone down the motorcycling path? I'm not sure I would. Another factor is that today's youngsters face much stronger headwinds than previous generations. Saving for a home? Finding secure well paying careers? Life is tougher than when I was young. Cultural changes also play a role. Perhaps the added risk that comes along with motorcycling is less acceptable to today's youth. It's much warmer and safer to use transit than a bike and you can play a game on your phone while getting to where you want to go. I'm in my sixties and retired. I ride significantly more miles a year, both urban and highway than at any time in my life. If there are enough old, cranky, politically engaged folks continuing to ride, it will be tough for the powers that be to curtail the use of motorcycles.

I'm in your demographic and agree with the comments. Unfortunately, I'm not yet retired though most of my contemporaries are, and I too ride extensively. I gave up my car about five years ago and commute daily even here in Minnesota. Cost is a big problem (bikes and associated costs), but there is simply less interest, broadly speaking, in many of the things that have previously gone along with motorcycling. The culture has entirely changed, particularly in the US and, so far as I know, in Canada. I think there's no going back.

"If there are enough old, cranky, politically engaged folks continuing to ride, it will be tough for the powers that be to curtail the use of motorcycles." ~ therein lies the problem, we're only, cranky, politically engaged motorcyclists because there were once young, moody, disinterested motorcyclists. Remove the young people and where are the future generations of old riders. Now that might not mean we need a whole bunch of twenty-somethings getting on bikes, but we do need a bunch of forty-somethings to come along behind us, or we'll become the last generation of riders.

As far as I can tell kids are pretty much happy to accept some for of simulation for just about anything. Why buy a motorcycle and ride when you can have a simulated thrill of a motorcycle, or fighter jet, or girlfriend on your Xbox? It's cheaper, safer, and doesn't require any risk. The motorcycle issue is one small part of the horrific long-term social implications of wallowing in non-reality.

Capitalism makes the consumer believe happiness lies at the next upgrade. I learned this recently, and I'm fine with my KLR650.

I’m young and two weeks ago I bought my 29th motorcycle. I currently have four in my garage. I guess it could be debated what is considered young. I’m 3/4 of a century 😚.
